You can go needs, best available, or somewhere in the middle. If you want a mid, but a tall is there that is just too good to pass up, you gotta take them. However, some lists are sometimes crying out for 1 type of player, and sometimes your better off drafting on needs rather than talent. Upon saying that, i don't think you'll find many people spending a top 5 pick on a player who they rate outside the top 10 just because they fit their needs.

I think at the time, a Polec type is what our team needed a lot more than a Heppell type. We got plenty of players who can play the role Heppell plays. We have very few players who can play the role Polec plays. This is where list balance comes into it, and will be the deciding factor between 2 players rated about the same.

if this is true from the herald sun -- GOOD ON U LIONS __OPERATION GO GET MARTIN ---Speed and skill I hope we get him and what form he had in the champs continues --if so great get !!!!!BRISBANE
Desperate to lure Tippett to Brisbane to fi ll the hole left by Mitch Clark. Decision due midweek. Patrick Karnezis is contracted but wants to get back to Victoria. Keen on 17-year-old GWS-aligned midfielder Jack Martin.

Yeah Dayle Garlett is my pick. Does anybody on here seriously not want this guy? I mean off field concerns aside he is the next Cyril Rioli and we could definitely use a Cyril in our side.
Welcome aboard the Garlett Express super impressive in the videos

I have been on the Garlett express since last year mate. Don't try and welcome me aboard now as if you are the driver of the bandwagon. Get out of my grill!!!!
Sorry if there has been a misunderstanding - I know you have been a garlett fan for along time, what i mean was hopefully you and i can convince the others who are talking of other options that garlett's speed and skill is exactly what the lions need in the mid field i was also fan since the days of the brisbane lions united site . so again sorry if my comments were taken the wrong way. there is only a very limited numbers of garlett supporters. please accept my apologies ,i work long hours so suffer from mental fatigue sometimes more care needed so next time i will make sure i proof read what i write

No worries. Yes there has seemed to be a slight misunderstanding but all is good now! You lost me when you said you were a fan since the Brisband Lions United site days though. Whatdawhatawhat? What does that mean?

BLU was a Brissy Lions forum until a short while ago. Many of our newer posters are refugees from that particular forum.

Now, I know it's sportsnewsfirst, and therefore quite unreliable, but if there is any basis in this article...

http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/articles/2012/10/02/gold-coast-pitch-for-viney/

"Viney, 18, is believed to have been interviewed by Gold Coast football staff last week when he was told the young outfit would take him with their first choice and pick number two in the draft just behind Greater Western Sydney’s first selection."

That would be a lot better for us... Would effectively make ours pick 7 overall (GC take him at 2, or Melb at 3)

Barring a sweetheart deal on Caddy say which includes an understanding not to bid on Viney, GC were always going to force Melb to use pick 3 on him. Fwiw I think Viney is exactly the kind of hard nosed mid that GC need. 2 might be overpaying but not by a great deal and he suits their needs more than others likely to be taken there.

Just wondering, are we any chance to draft those massive American hopefuls? Sure they'll take a while getting used to AFL, but seeing the size of them, their testing results, makes me wonder. Would be delightful to be the first team to blood an American into the best sport :D

Edit: Of course, there's a huge risk of not having ball skills, homesickness and various other reasons, but all hypothetical of course

Who's better Cameron or Bourke? Would be great to get at least one of them.

At the moment, I'd say Bourke, but Cameron probably has great potential. Wouldn't surprise me at all if we traded with the Suns for one of them.

The talk about Martin is very interesting. I didn't think we'd be the type of club interested in chasing him at all personally.

I personally haven't seen either of them play, but it does appear Cameron has some athletic ability thst's for sure:

Afl draft combine testing

Towers, White and Lonergan feature prominently too. Lonergan is an inside mid that can jump?

I think that Cameron would be rated higher, and I personally would take him as an early second rounder in this years draft. He is a bit shorter, but a super athlete, very strong and he is an excellent mark. His disposal is also very good and he has the versatility to play as a CHB or a CHF.

Bourke on the other hand is also a very talented prospect, he is a genuine tall forward, great mark both contested and on the lead, good athletic ability, quite agile as a player and moves round the field well. His disposal is also pretty good so there is a lot to work with. He is a bit skinny atm and is more a long term project but there is definitely talent there. I have heard reports that Brisbane have been considering him strongly all year and I wouldn't mind if Brisbane picked him up provided we didn't pay much. I think Geelong didn't pick him up as it was a similar situation to Tom Curran last year they didn't want to overpay.

Does anyone know if Gold Coast players are protected in the pre-season draft from GWS?

They are. This is the last year that GWS has special PSD rules on it, as this is the last year they can sign uncontracted players.

If the suns have to use there 1st pick on tippet in the draft and Doggies, use pick 6,7 on J TOY or Caddy, we could end up with a even better pick.....maybe Mayes
