2012 Draft Discussion

I'd love to get our hands on Anderson from NT and to a lesser extent Boston. Any chance we could throw something at GWS to get Anderson pre-listed and to us?
Maybe Banfield?

Any thoughts from the draft watch gurus here?

And is it just me or does every year it seem like about 30 players are rated as top 10 picks and assumed to go in the top 10, it just feels that way when people rate players.
Ah the joys of subjectivity.

Really rate Lonergan, and have for some time (known of him longer than almost anyone else in this draft year, bar Cameron and Ives). Would love for us to grab him with 30 or, if there is a god, 47. Would be especially miraculous considering we won't have either of those picks after St Kilda get their Goddard compo.

The article that mentioned us being interested in Martin in the MD surprised me, I must admit. I think he'll be a star, but I didn't expect us to get involved in the mini draft at all. In fact, I still don't, and will believe that article to be nothing but speculation until something is confirmed.

I tend to agree with you on the non participation in the mini draft due to comments I read somewhere about Kerr's reluctance to draft players with doubts in regards to their bodies or personality. Even though these two don't fall into these categories It might just be a bit too much of a gamble which is a shame. You say Martin, I say Hogan. I've heard all of the big man theories and there have been plants of examples however I feel he will not be one of those examples. Besides anyone compared to Brownie should be an automatic pick to the lions!

Pick 23 for Boston and Cameron. Made my mind up, now to fly down to Etihad to tell the boys to make it happen. I'll get in their ear about Hogan at 8 as well.

From comments attributed to Clayton and Ashcroft on AFL site yesterday, as expected doesn't sound like Gold Coast will be taking many (if any) Qld zone selections. However hard to believe they haven't decided on their top preferences on who to list - would think they would need to have a fair idea of the 1 or 2 they don't want to give up before they start getting bids from other clubs to trade for the Qlders once trade week starts next Mon.

Which comments are these? About Bourke and Cameron?

I have fingers crossed that we'll pick up Boston and Cameron. Can't see us picking up anymore though.

Sunny, the article is here: http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/149171/default.aspx

Yeah I also find it interesting what Ashcroft said. Gold Coast will have to decide how many Qld zone players they will keep for themselves, because only then they'll be able to know who to list then trade off to other clubs (eg Zorko, Yagmoor).

From his comments of "one or a couple or none", they won't be listing more than 2. The can list up to 5.

The top Qld draft prospects seem to be:
Clay Cameron
Jordon Bourke
Andrew Boston
Brian Coleman-Broome
?Clouston ?Aliir ?other
Perhaps a couple of other prospects eg Ives, Wallin are also in the picture, but more as rookie prospects.

For players who Gold Coast 'list then trade on', it's just like any trade - the player will need to agree to be traded to that club. Now last year obviously we saw Yagmoor go to a non-Qld club, but hopefully the stay-home factor can give us the edge in this situation. I certainly wouldn't mind offering up pick 23 for two of the above players.

These are the Draft Combine Beep Test results, as posted on Drafts & Trades Board:

SHUTTLE RUN (BEEP TEST)
Tom Clurey - 15.1
Mitchell Van Den Berg - 14.9
Kamdyn McIntosh - 14.8
Joshua Kelly - 14.6
Will Hams - 14.4
Jonathan O'Rourke 14.4
Sam Siggins 14.4
Oliver Wines 14.3
Jason Ashby 1422
Brodie Murdoch 14.2
Jacob Ballard 14.2
Dominic Barry 14.2
Jesse Hogan - 14.2

Hogan want - big frame, powerful, Browny-like aerobic capacity, a good mark, has presence...

Pick 8 for Mini Draft pick 2 please!!

Smith and Wardle (state 18's and both played some NEAFL games at end of season), although not on any of the released AFL invite lists, also more recently added to group testing from Qld.

For Qld state screening boys testing on Sat this week at Ethiad - day after combine finishes -so presumably will still be a fair few recruiters watching on
Smith is a good footballer.

I haven't seen much of Wardle or Skennar. Any insights there FM?

Yeah yeah, for sure.

If it's anything like last year, we'll pick up 2 zone selections and on-trade the rest. My picks would be Cameron and Boston, with Bourke missing out. Hope the Suns make it happen!
OK, I've thought about this quite a lot (I REALLY want Cameron and one of Coleman-Broome or Boston)... and, trying to be impartial, I don't think GC will list any of them. My reason why:

  • They can pre-list, or draft at the end of the draft... They won't pre-list for themselves if they can get as a zoned draft pick, as they have too many players already.
  • They will only take 3 picks in the draft. I don't see any way they can get rid of enough players to get a 4th... they are very keen to keep as many of their players as possible.
  • From what I can tell, the highest that any of the GC zone-able guys are valued is early 2nd round (Boston and Cameron - i've heard both called an early 2nd rd possibility).
  • This means that, for them to want one of those guys, they would have to consider that the best they can get with their 3rd pick in the draft is an early 2nd rounder.
  • So far, GC have pick 2. Their 2nd pick will be somewhere around 12-14 dependant on what they get for Caddy. If we are willing to give them pick 23 for a couple of the zone selections (eg. Cameron and Boston), and I would assume at least one of the clubs would be willing to offer a deal for a few pre-listed players, then their 3rd pick would then be 23, or end of 1st round... so they would have the option of accepting the trade and taking a pick near 23, or taking a zone list player. Since none of the zone list players are valued above 23, I don't see GC taking them... Especially when, knowing that they'll want only 3 picks, hopefully all in the first round, they can package in their 2nd/3rd rounders to move up a pick or 2, just like they did last year (eg. pick 23 and 2nd rounder for pick near 18 - they weren't going to use 2nd rounder anyway, and other team trades ~18 for somewhere near 23 and 25)).
The big flaws with this plan is Tippett, or the Cats compensation pick for Caddy. Therefore, I'm hoping neither of these things happen - Caddy for a live pick, and Tippett to Sydney. Even then though, with their 2nd round pick at pick 25 - if that were their 3rd pick, they'd be pushing it... early 2nd rounder is the absolutely earliest i've heard Cameron and Boston rated.

TOM LEE former crows full foward now with clearmont in the wafl......If we miss out on tippet could the lions be interetsed in him, havent seen him play only read snippets online.

Has anyone seen him play and would he be a good fit at the lions.

A friendly suggestion: you might like to do a search of the thread for players' names before asking about 'em. We're already going around in circles on the trade threads...it'd be nice to avoid that on here (at least for a few weeks).

In the afl.com.au article it said we were one of only 7 or 8 to have interviewed him. Apparently he's more of a third tall. Could possibly be an upgrade on Cornelius.

Looks like we're interested in Hogan.

Melbourne, Fremantle and possibly the Brisbane Lions and Geelong, are likely to focus on pick No.2, which would be used to select WA key forward Jesse Hogan or classy Victorian midfielder Josh Kelly.

Sources have suggested the Demons, Fremantle and the Lions would select Hogan with pick No.2, while Geelong's interest was around Kelly.

Assuming they take Viney early, Melbourne have picks 4, 13 and 26 plus players to offer. Box seat if they use pick 4.

Geelong has a priority pick plus pick 15. They may also put one of their young rucks or key forwards into the mix. The ability to save the priority pick for next year would be attractive to GWS.

Not sure what Freo would have beyond pick 16. The oh so hyped Zac Clarke perhaps?

We've got the 2nd best draft pick out of the named clubs.

I think Freo are probably in the best position to get Hogan. They'll go pretty hard for that pick.

The link to us sounds like guesswork to me.

The "possibly" is a bit of a giveaway, while the unnamed 'sources' don't help give it cred. ;)

Best case scenario for me would be a Brennan type deal. Get GWS to offer Banfield a big fat contract and trade the compensation pick as well as pick 8 and maybe someone else.

That would presumably put us out of the running for an elite mid in the main draft.

I wouldn't agree with that. We could simply rate Hogan ahead of any player likely to be available at pick 8. If we don't get Hogan, we're back to best available but with an eye on our needs.

Clearly we would be rating him higher. My point was simply that if we use pick 8 we are then left with our best pick at 23 which is unlikely to get us one of the top rated midfielders.
