2012 Draft Discussion

Geez Hogan is impressive.

Dom Barry's put up some pretty good numbers too. 10th in running vertical jump, 9th in repeat sprints, 9th in beep test and 3rd in 3km time trial. GWS can list him (would be behind Anderson and Neade) or trade him on - likely scenario would be as part of mini draft trade.

When Sam Michael was drafted Kerr's comment on him was:

“We pre-selected Sam Michael because you don’t find too many 200cm players who can run 3km in 10 and half minutes.”

The two could make a formidable duo.

Must. Not. Get. Hopes. Up.

Yeah, I've learnt that the club usually picks someone I'm not barracking for with the first pick, except Dan Rich.

Understand the need for a mature key forward to replace Browny in 2 years, but Hogan just seems a great fit, and shouldn't take long to be ready. Jordan Lisle, while not likely to be dominant, will be 23 next year and should start to play regular games, somewhat filling that gap of mature key forward.

Looking ahead (prematurely) to the Academy, it's worth noting that our Academy players with AIS-AFL scholarships in Tickner, Dawson and Hammelman are all key forward prospects. Hopefully they make their way on our list over the next 2 years.

I'm trying not to become too attached to any of the draftees, so can someone please say something bad about Hogan.

Just imagine Dennis calling a goal kicked by Hogan.

This is probably a silly question, but what's the mini-draft got to do with our pick 8? And how does it work?

RW, in short, as part of the GWS concessions, they get access to two players from next year's draft. They can't put these players on their own list, but they can trade them, and being the best 17 year olds in the country they are worth a lot. So the mini draft consists of the two picks they trade.

I have said it before and I will say it again, but I would definitely be looking to get Hogan. As far as how he compares to this years talls, he is behind Daniher who I rate at pick 2 behind Whitfield, and behind Grundy, who is more of a ruck. He is the best tall forward available and way ahead of Jaksch, Shaw and O'Brien. I would probably rate him around pick 6 this year, but it is hard to say.

The most impressive thing about him is his presence, he is similar to Jack Darling both command the football from a young age. He is true number 1 kpf and probably the only certain no 1 kpf other than Daniher available in this years draft. He would complete our list more than any mid would or could.

As far as trades go:

Pick 8 and Pick 23 are the most valuable things we have imo. We have decent players to offer up, as much as it pains me to say it and it is dangerous but a player like Matt McGuire could be valuable to them in the short term, or even Justin Clarke as a rookie.

I don't think Melbourne will trade pick 4 as that is not worth Hogan on its own, they lose pick 3 to Viney, Grundy/Toumpass are imo better prospects. The other potential worry is Port Adelaide they could put a sneaky bid in for MD2 with 7 but they have Butcher and Schultz already. so we are in a good position.

So GWS will accept whatever pick/trade value is best for them, and will trade on that specific player to the team that nominated the player? GWS are basically getting draft picks/players for nothing then?

First question - yes, they will trade to the highest bidder.
Second question - yes, it was part of their start up package, just like all the picks in last year's draft.

Edit: note that GWS trade the pick, and then the club that has bought the pick will then choose which player they want.

Yep. 4 picks in total. They chose to put up 2 for auction last year and 2 this year. Selection limited to 17yos born between Jan and April.

First part is right, they accept whatever value is best for them. However they are trading the draft picks, not the players themselves. GWS are trading away mini-draft picks 1 and 2, and the draft pool is the top 17yo's born between Jan-Apr '95 (excluding a few like Luke McDonald who's a F/S to North next year).

If the Bulldogs were to get mini-draft pick 1 from GWS in the trade, they could take anyone from that pool they want. Martin just happens to be the highest rated player in the draft pool, so you'd assume they'd take him. If we were to get mini-draft pick 2, we'd take the next best that we'd want, which we're assuming is Hogan, though rumours are if Geelong got it, they'd take Kelly. So GWS are trading the picks, not the players.

Last season GC traded for the pick that got O'Meara, and Adelaide for the pick that got Crouch.

GWS getting draft picks/players for nothing, yep, pretty much.

It's worthy to note that only players born from January-April can go into the mini-draft.

The other potential worry is Port Adelaide they could put a sneaky bid in for MD2 with 7 but they have Butcher and Schultz already. so we are in a good position.

Everyone loves Hogan here, but Port Adelaide could still take MD 2 with pick 7. There's a Victorian named Josh Kelly who won the 3km today and has pushed his draft stocks up massively, so much that clubs are split on him or Hogan. http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/149246/default.aspx
In short, Port could still easily go in the mini-draft for pick 7 and instead select Josh Kelly as they don't need a key forward.

No interest in wasting a top 10 pick on a key position forward, far too risky for our club at this stage. Apart from Franklin and Roughhead, Kosi and Riewoldt, which other top 10 forwards have made an impact on the competition. Our own Kurt Tippett with 25 or close. Taylor Walker the best forward in the game at the moment was a scholarship player but by all accounts would have been a bargain pick.

2003 K.Bradley 6
2004 Roughead 2, Franklin 5, Williams 6, Meesen 8
2005 Kennedy 4, Ryder 7, Clark 9
2006 Gumbleton 2, Hansen 3, Luenberger 4, Thorp 6, Ben Reid 8, Nathan Brown 10
2007 Kruezer 1, Grant 5, Henderson 8, McEvoy 9
2008 Watts 1, Naitanui 2, Hurley 5, Vickery 8, Davis 10
2009 Butcher 8

In fairness to the key position player i did not include 10,11 drafts, the only players I would take ahead of D.Rich would be Roughead, Franklin and Naitanui

Too risky taking a top 10 pick on a key position.

Have thought about Maguire myself actually and certainly fits the profile for what they're asking. He is in that older bracket, had a very good year but slightly injury prone. If it meant keeping pick 23 I'm up for it. My reluctance to give up pick 23 is that it could be used for trading with GC for two of their Qld allocated players (Boston and Cameron) or for another player then one at 30 and possible rookie upgrades, Crisp I think has shown something.

Pavlich pick 4, Riewoldt pick 13, Hawkins probably would've been pick 1 had he not been F/S.

Top goal kicking key forwards this year
Pavlich - pick 4
Franklin - pick 5
Riewoldt - pick 13
Walker - NSW scholarship, pick 75
Hawkins - F/S, probable top 3 pick, pick 32
Cloke - F/S, pick 39
Petrie - pick 23
Darling - pick 26
Brown - F/S, pick 30
Riewoldt - pick 1
Schulz - pick 12
Roughead - pick 2

So of the top 12, we have 6 first rounders (picks 1-13), 3 father/son's (one probably would've been a top pick), 2 second rounders and a NSW scholarship holder.
