2012 Draft Discussion

Considering my grievance towards playing all of Merrett, Maguire and Patfull in the backline I would not be against trading Maguire.

No interest in wasting a top 10 pick on a key position forward, far too risky for our club at this stage. Apart from Franklin and Roughhead, Kosi and Riewoldt, which other top 10 forwards have made an impact on the competition. Our own Kurt Tippett with 25 or close. Taylor Walker the best forward in the game at the moment was a scholarship player but by all accounts would have been a bargain pick.

2003 K.Bradley 6
2004 Roughead 2, Franklin 5, Williams 6, Meesen 8
2005 Kennedy 4, Ryder 7, Clark 9
2006 Gumbleton 2, Hansen 3, Luenberger 4, Thorp 6, Ben Reid 8, Nathan Brown 10
2007 Kruezer 1, Grant 5, Henderson 8, McEvoy 9
2008 Watts 1, Naitanui 2, Hurley 5, Vickery 8, Davis 10
2009 Butcher 8

In fairness to the key position player i did not include 10,11 drafts, the only players I would take ahead of D.Rich would be Roughead, Franklin and Naitanui

Too risky taking a top 10 pick on a key position.

Where would Cloke, Brown and Hawkins have gone? There are many other players taken in the top ten that haven't made the grade either and that is why the draft is what it is, a lottery. Hogan fills a very, very big need that we are lacking, if we had one or two top young KPF we wouldn't be having this conversation and would be drafting some one else which we most highly likely will (sob) be.

Can we afford to draft a player in 2012 who we cannot realistically expect any sort of major output until 2018. Our 2 million dollar loss points to a need to become more competitive ASAP. Pluse if we can get a player like Wines or Garlett at 8, this is a good draft!!!

I see that you have your opinion and I respect that. Hogan or not, pick 8 should (hopefully) be a good pick up for our club (not Tippet)

Smith is a good footballer.

I haven't seen much of Wardle or Skennar. Any insights there FM?

The under 18 boys going to screening I guess are rookie chances at best

Wardle from North Qld, trained with Gold Coast Academy over summer and this year played for Labrador when not with state under 18's. Stated as Key defender in piece on AFL website today, but not sure this is his best spot. In Qld team he struggled a bit at CHB initially but later much more effective playing mainly as lead up forward and filling in occasionally as small mobile ruckman. However later in season played in defense in NEAFL - named in best a couple of times there but didn't see him play those games myself. On what I saw of 18's, Not sure his best spot is defense.

Skenner - From Broadbeach - good runner / endurance etc. Played disciplined role in defense at state 18's. Not sure quite yet up to being considered rookie candidate this year.

Grewer midfielder, Wyld defender, Smith small defender in this years state team. Could any get a rookie spot I think depends on whether any recruiters feel they could be developed to play somewhat different roles at next level. Wardle and Wyld both about 188cm so not big enough to play in AFL in the key positions they have played at state 18's and NEAFL but both good size for medium forward/ back roles. Smith has great skills, esp kicking, but fairly slight so more outside - could his defensive side be developed enough for next level?

Guess that's the key with Cameron and Bourke as well - can they play key position type roles at AFL level?

Considering he's a KPF, you'd imagine any other KF prospect we'd pick up (other than Tippet) would still need at least a year before they're ready to play. Most of the available mids probably wouldn't offer a great deal in their first year anyway. 2018 is a bit pessimistic too, he's 193cm and 97kg and by all accounts ready to go now. A year in an AFL development system and I'm pretty sure he'd be contributing in 2014.

So many good points, i will say avoid Loveday's ginger beer, bloody shocking, Leuwin Estate Cab Merlot 2009 terrible for 33 bucks, just a night of let downs!!!

Hopefully Port think that Toumpas might drop to them at 7, like Whitfield did last year.

Exactly what I think might happen. A possibility if Melbourne use 4 on Viney and GWS have 5 and/or 6. Still very, very remote chance though.

un/fortunetly for some i cant see anything else other than the suns trade pick 2 for martin and bulldogs trade 5 and or 6 for another pick and get hogan

If we don't use #2 on Viney or to secure someone in the MD, then I would imagine we'd use it on Jimmy for sure.

Do you think they'll use it for another MD pick? You've already got O'Meara who would've been first round this year. Add him and Toumpas, etc. and you've got yourself two possibly elite mids at the same age. Would Hogan be of interest? I feel not since your KPFs are almost settled (especially if you land Tippett).

Scotty Clayton has said we'd be keen on the MD again, though I think it's taken a bit of a back-seat with the Tippett stuff going on.

Since it seems unlikely we are going to be getting Tippett though, it could be back on. Especially if we don't get Viney.

I feel like we wouldn't go for Hogan.

Martin however is very much a Clayton type recruit. For pick #2 though, I would like Martin + Jed Anderson. We get a tough inside midfielder for next year in Anderson, along with Martin to compliment Bennell for 2014. Pick #2 just for Martin alone seems to be overs.

I shared it on the GWS board and they would happily give away Hogan, Martin AND Anderson for #2. :P I guess them having picks #1 & #2 is a big deal. Get Grundy and Whitfield, as it were.

All theories of course, but yeah. Clayton has said we would be interested in the MD. How that goes down, or whether we plan on using pick #2, I have no idea.

Watched both of those boys at Etihad this year, Martin was just outstanding. Reading an article about him yesterday when he decided to move away to give himself the best chance of succeeding would really give any team wanting to draft him more of a reason to.

With the draft being held on the GC again this year, i'm hoping the club does something similar to last time, and holds a little function for members. It was really great to hear a little bit from our recruiters about who we picked up and why, as well as meeting 1 or 2 of the recruits on the night.

Damn would have just had or about to have our next child. That would be awesome to go to.

Any interest in the other Tippett? Young key defender who seems to have developed a fair bit since leaving the Suns. I'd be lukewarm at best but he's an option.

That'd be brilliant. Do you know who organised it last time? We should get onto them about setting something up.

Another former Lions player to come in calculations, I was impressed with his year but I would pass. I would much rather try and pick someone like Smith or Rodda up in the draft.
