2012 Draft Discussion

Don't understand using this year's pick 2 to pick up somebody who might be pick 2 or worse next year, plus he can't play for another 12 months.

Reasons to do so
- GC rate Martin as clear cut pick 1 or 2 next year, making it worthwhile
- GC want to get into the mini-draft to help with list management (Martin won't cost a spot next year)
- some other dodgy deals still to come

If we got mini-draft pick number 2 and Hogan was taken with the first pick I am thinking I would take Matt Crouch over Martin.

Would we know that Hogan was taken with MD1 before we had to bid for MD2?

I have to say that I am less enamoured with the idea of getting an MD pick if Hogan is off the table. Martin/Crouch/Kelly might be excellent prospects but Hogan fills a key structural requirement which, IMO, justifies the risk of trading away an early pick+ in this year's draft.

Someone on the AFL chat thingy said that it allows GC to manage their list a bit more effectively given that Martin doesn't take a list spot for another 12 months. Buys GC 12 months to assess the talent on their list. I actually think that argument has some merit (not as much as the Clayton is a moron argument though...)

So our pick 8 is now the equivalent of pick 11 or 12 with father-son and last year's mini-draft taken into account...

Maybe we can do a high 5 deal with GWS to trade us Pick 3 (with the future promise of tanking our games against them next year) and agree to draft Toumpas for Pick 8. Get on board with the Melbourne recruiting policy.

There is some small advantage of GWS having as many picks as possible before ours. Last year, the GWS "predictability" was used by the Lions in their draft planning. Further, the way I see it, GWS will want to take a ruckman and a tall defender and, while I'd be OK if we took a defender, we don't need a ruck. But if GWS used early picks on the likes of Grundy and Plowman (as well as Whitfield), it could well push the highly rated midfielders down the draft a bit, which could play into our hands.

But don't discount Melb selling pick 4 as well which could bring another club into the mix that is looking for a mid

POBT, likely Gold Coast trade Caddy to Melbourne. Melbourne paying "overs" for Caddy was probably what was promised GC to not bid for Viney.

To be honest, he's about the last player that I'd sign up if he didn't want to play with me. He's got form that loyalty to a team means very little to him. The fact that he wants to go home to Melbourne but still wants to pick and choose which club to play for says volumes IMO.

As mad as I am at GC, I think what Port and Essendon have just done is way worse as far as draft tampering goes. Port trading for Monfries (for a second round pick) so that their compensation for FA isn't lowered seems pretty dodgy.
