2012 Draft Discussion

As mad as I am at GC, I think what Port and Essendon have just done is way worse as far as draft tampering goes. Port trading for Monfries (for a second round pick) so that their compensation for FA isn't lowered seems pretty dodgy.

I think this was roughly working as intended. The restricted free agency was meant to enable more trades, as the compensation won't be as great as could be received as trading the player.

Have to agree with bob. Either Port took him as a free agent, receive less FA compensation, and Essendon get nothing - or they trade a pick to Essendon, and receive more compensation from AFL. Win-win for me - I'd want my club to do the same.

Similar to our Brennan trade to Gold Coast. We agreed for Gold Coast to take him as a 2nd uncontracted player, thus generating an end-of-first-round compensation pick out of thin air. With that we were able to get 25 and 28 (along with the pick 5 & 10 swap). Another win-win situation.

However, I'd like to add that time has shown it to be a win-loss situation.
Brisbane: Polec, Karnezis, Lester
Gold Coast: Gorringe, a player who takes up a huge chunk of salary, is so bad to the extent he's getting dropped to the reserves, and Gold Coast can't get rid of him as he's still contracted. :D

I guess it just means Essendon gets another 3rd round pick, which they wouldn't have gotten had Monfries left through FA. Pretty nice of Port I suppose.
Just means Port don't have to outbid Essendon for Monfries' salary as he's a restricted free agent. Port gets more FA compensation and Essendon gets a pick with which to play. Sure, it is working the system, but feels above board to me.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this deal. In fact it is smart dealing (win/win) from both clubs.
Port can now get Russel through the PSD and still receive compensation picks for loosing their FAs.
Lets hope Kerr can pull something similar to upgrade us to pick 3 or get us pick 2 in the MD.

Don't have any problem with that deal either.

In other news, the draft is shaping out to be the same as last year, GWS dominating all the picks. Does it help or hinder us at pick 8 thought ?

With GWS dominating the first few picks it could end up something like:

1. Whitfield
2. Grundy
3. Toumpass
4. Mayes
5. Plowman
6. Macrae
7. Wines
8. O'Rourke

Unlikely that O'Rourke would slide so far but anything is possible. He would be my preference at Pick 8 I think, but there should definitely be a highly rated player with a ton of talent at Pick 8 so I am not too worried about missing out on a trade or MD Pick.

You woudl think if GWS dominate the draft, someone will slide, they won't take too many of the same types of players. Getting someone like Macrae, Wines or O'Rourke starts becoming possible.

Also GWS loaded up on inside mids last year and didn't take the best ruckman available, Longer, so you would think they would be after a young ruckman outside pacy mids and possibly a key defender. I think that Melbourne will probably look to pick up another mid if they get Hogan, provided Grundy isn't available, and the Doggies will look at an outside mid as well, also they apparently have looked strongly at both Mayes and Stringer. Port Adelaide need everything so they will probably go best possible.

Leaving us with a highly rated inside mid or choice of tall forward.

I think where talls go will be telling. Melb, GWS and Dogs could all use some talls, so i think we have a good chance of a decent mid getting down to us. Will be interesting to see what we are actually targeting though. I'm starting to feel that we will simply go best available this year, likely to be a mid. I think we can get away without a tall, we have some options on our list, but that might also depend on how we rate the talls next year as well.

I think our rating of the talls coming through the academy system next year may have a bearing on who we go for or whether we trade for another tall. Looks like a mid with pick 8 which I think is reasonable.

Doesn't Clayton have a bit of a thing for the quick, skinny midfielders?

Saw a pic of him on the GC web page(see below)....I reckon you may be right....he's been eating them....

Geez that Viney deal while great for Melbourne did us in in regard to getting Hogan. Hogan to the Dees maybe?

With clubs trading trading high draft picks like a fire sale, it gives the impression that it is a weak draft.

I'm getting the impression that it's a funny draft. There's not really that top level talent - there's questions over most players bar Whitfield and maybe Grundy. However it is deep, to the extent that picks in the 20s through 40s seem to have more value than usual. I'd be curious as to some of the more dedicated watchers like Quigley or Offsider think.

With how compromised the last few drafts have been its probably hard to really know. I would probably agree that it's just a typical draft, top 30 pretty good, falls away after that. However is a few gems you can get past 30, and the real top end talent has already been plucked out of it. I think with a good eye there is plenty to like.

Fair assessment.

Looks like Dom Barry is heading to Melb. Damn.

If we don't lose or gain any draft picks can anyone see us using any more than our first 4 picks. Our third rounder will be pushed into the 50s due to free agency and can be used on a smoky like Wearden last year and probably have 2 elevations (McKeever and Crisp).

Pick 8 for Jed Anderson + pick 14? ;)
Just cos you'll prob know this off the top of your head, how many zone players can GWS list (and trade) this year?
