2012 Draft Discussion

Just cos you'll prob know this off the top of your head, how many zone players can GWS list (and trade) this year?

Three NT (Anderson, Neale and Barry the obvious candidates for listing and/or trading), plus a handful of NSW ones - I think that's 16 over five years, which probably won't all be used for obvious reasons. They've only used a handful of the NSW ones.

I'm getting the impression that it's a funny draft. There's not really that top level talent - there's questions over most players bar Whitfield and maybe Grundy. However it is deep, to the extent that picks in the 20s through 40s seem to have more value than usual. I'd be curious as to some of the more dedicated watchers like Quigley or Offsider think.

It is a little bit like that personally I rate the draft as having:

a Clear no 1 pick: Whitfield
10 other players who are pretty hard to split but all great prospects
from picks 12 - 25 have some very highly talented prospects
from 25 - 50 there are some good kids in there as well

Speaking of NT footballers, I just saw that Ben Rioli is at the SA State Screening today. I really liked what I saw in him in both games againstthe Lions Reserves this year. Is there any chance of him being selected in the National or Rookie Draft this year? Interested to see if he's put on any weight.

GWS securing more top picks is making us a slim chance to land one of the sliders.
The may go for needs basis on the third pick taking some one early than expected. Here's hoping.

Remember a slider that got to pick 8 last year. I'd be very happy if we drafted someone of Longer's talent this year with pick 8. Also a certain other was available at pick 8 who had a really good season.

That's my thought mpal, they do have a good group of mids already, they might go tall at 3. Even at 11 and 13 they will still get some decent mid depth.

If we were going to trade a later pick for a QLD kid who would be the likely options for those in the know ? Anyone we would like to pick up? We will have a few academy players next year, do we think that might shape our drafting this year ?

I see what you're getting at, but wishful thinking, I reckon.

Hard to see them overlooking Whitfield, Toumpas and Grundy.

I'd love to know what our plan is for a Key forward to replace Browny now we have missed out on Tippett. Anyone in this draft or someone coming through in our academy?? I'd say pick 8 will most certainly be used on a midfielder.

Every chance someone will take a punt on him.

We have delisted a few back flanker types. We could be the ones to give him a go given our guys have seen him up close and personal.

Yup Hogan's gone now.

Melbourne have traded pick number 3 and pick number 13 to the GWS Giants in return for the second overall pick in the GWS Mini Draft (Jesse Hogan), Pre-listed North Ballarat player Dom Barry and pick 20 in the 2012 National Draft.

GWS now have picks 1, 2 and 3 in the national draft.

Fuuuuaaarkkkk, look at this!

Any chance of us trading pick 8, pick 23 and a player like Polkinghorne, Bartlett or O'brien for pick 12 and 13 with GWS.

We can draft:

Pick 12 a decent mid (Macrae, Garlett, May)

Pick 13 Mason Shaw

Pick 30 key position defender (Tanner Smith or Rodda)

Pick 49 Clay Cameron

Pick 67: Rookie upgrade (Jack Crisp)

Plus Brent Moloney via Free Agency

Trust me, I have been wavering a lot to get some trade done, to make ourselves look like a "player" during trade period. The more I think about it, I would rather prefer Kerr/Hadley sit on their backsides, do nothing and land a gem at 8 rather than try a re-shuffle.

Gubby being Gubby will ask for Zorko if you go near him with Polks/Bartlett/O'Brien. Just my opinion. Don't know about Silvagni much, but would've been tarred by the same brush as Gubby by now.

GWS would be more likely to take just 8 and 23 rather than the picks and player because of the number of first round picks they have on their list - you'd have to assume that any of those three aren't going to be pushing them immediately, and none are really the big bodied and more mature players that GWS might be looking for. Having said that, would you give up 11 and 13 for 8 and 23? If the latter was in the late teens instead, maybe, but 23 is a bit low.

Won't it be 12 and 14 that GWS hold? They've currently got 12 and 13 but St Kilda's compo pick will slot in between those.

FWIW, if I'm GWS, I'd love to be done and dusted with the draft by pick 14. Take 5 of the best 14 players available and run away. That's the equivalent of having 5 first round picks in a normal year.

Couldn't see anyone being enticed by the three mentioned to give up valuable picks. And don't frankly think giving up 8 and 23 for 11 and 13 is a step up given who we could get with 8.

GWS don't have that small forward who loves to tackle and plus Gubby would take a player like Banfield who earned a Raising Star Normination back in 2009 or 2010 was it.

KEEP 8 for flips sake! Just because we aren't wheeling and dealing isn't such a bad thing. They know our list better than we do. We can throw up as many hair brained ideas as we want, god knows I have, but they get paid the big bucks for a reason. Everything really has just started. Let's see how it pans out.

Totally agree...no way should we be looking at trading pick 8. Need to keep our top ten picks while we are getting them

What player would you draft a pick 8?

Wines if he is there. Most probably not. If not Stringer. Not put off by his leg at all. Big bodies with the ability to make an impact. Believe we are really lacking that. GF was fairly evident and when we had Voss, Scott brothers, Lynch, Brown etc. we are a young team but I believe that he would fit a need. He is able to go back, forward and into the middle though he doesn't have the engine yet and it take a few pre seasons.

Our moto is to strengthen the list, however a sub moto for us the past few years has also been to improve our draft position. IIRC, our average draft position of our list was in the 40's, Kerr wanted to improve this, which is why we've had our 3 top 30 picks the last few years. Whilst we might look around at FA and trade options, we won't compromise our draft position to do it, not unless we believe the player we are trading in is a better option than a player we would draft with the pick spent, ala Lisle last year.

Kerr seemed to like the FA idea, so we can bring someone in without it costing us a pick and i think we will explore that option fully first. If there is no one we want, or can't entice here, i think we will move on to any trades, but again, i think we will think small with trades, cheap fringe players or state players ala Zorko last year.

We've done really well the last few years at the trade table and in the draft, i can't see why it won't be any different this year. Kerr has made it clear we won't get involved for the hell of it, the draft is still the main focus for us.
