2012 Draft Discussion

We seem to have a better strike rate with QLD, Vic Country and WA players, for sure. I hadn't noticed it myself, but I think I also mentally grey out Vic Metro players from my list. Hopefully Billy helps to buck the trend.

You can add Lester to that list. I'd be more upset if he left then Pat at the moment.

Not sure of the validity, but SOS has said on TWR that they wouldn't be opposed to trading pick 2, for the right deal of course. Toumpas dream still alive for me anyway

With maloney all but locked in I am would really like the club to take the punt on m shaw at pick 8, the depth of key fowards in this draft isnt to crash hot...

and with pick 23 and 30 we could still nab a very quality mid vlaustin, hrovat, aitken, towers,

IMO when it comes to first round draft picks, nine times out of ten you go best available. The other time you think about picking for needs, but still go best available.

Even if best available is Brodie Grundy?

Pick 8 Im starting to warm to big Mason Shaw and pick we should make it a priority to get either Josh Simpson of Mathew Haynes and pick 30 we go for Hrovat, Lonergan etc. If we do that we will get closer to our recruiting goals whatever they are

If Brody Grundy was the best available I'd think about picking based on needs, and then pick Grundy.

To be honest, ruckmen who are only good at rucking, would probably be the exception, so you've caught me out there, irel. We have two high quality players of that description, so we probably don't need another one. I'm not sure how Grundy fits in, in that regard. If he is only servicable as a forward, then perhaps we may be best off passing on him. But when it comes to choosing between a midfieler and a key position player, we should definitely maximise the value of the draft pick and get the best talent available.

Of course, for all we know, perhaps they do rate Shaw in the top eight.

Shaw is about 12-15 range from what I hear. This is a deal I think would benefit all three clubs involved:
Brisbane trade 8 & 23 to the Bulldogs, GWS give the Lions picks 12 & 13 (Shaw thing to get the KPF) and the Bulldogs give the Giants pick 5.
GWS will then get 1,2,3,5 (yes I know it sounds ludicrous) Anderson and Neade in the draft. With 20 first rounders on their list you would think they are open to upgrading 12 & 13 for a higher pick. The Bulldogs have to downgrade their pick but get the chance to develop another talented player at pick 23. Brisbane would most likely get Shaw and another high quality selection at 13. Just a deal that would give great benefit to all involved.

Can't see us trading away pick 8 in order to get two lower picks, nor paying over the odds just to get in a specific type of player.ie KPF. I would imagine that Shaw or anyone else for that matter will only be taken if they are rated at or about 8. Our recruiters have said in the past that we take the best available talent with our first pick - I can't see how that would have changed from last year.

1. I can. 12 & 13 is a better deal than 8 & 23. Simple....
2. So if Grundy happened to be available you would pick him I assume? Surely not with Longer and Leuenberger already top 10 ruckmen on the list.
The best-talent argument is relevant, however there is a huge hole in our list for a quality key forward. The recruiters have to weigh up whether to go for the best talent or needs basis, but IMO if they do not go for a young KPF inside the top 30 it is a big mistake.

IIRC the club sent email invites for tickets out sometime mid to late Oct (after trading week??)

Cheers kharis, hopefully there's a repeat of that this year.

GC is going to have a fast midfield  Swallow, O'meara, Bennell and Martin. They will be difficult to stop.

Sounds like Bulldogs few years back. It was new when Eade got them to play-on all the time. Looked spectacular.

GC would have way higher skill level. Will be interesting to watch.

Interesting. I would still rather keep pick 8 for a top line player, then use pick 23 for a tall forward. Maybe Shaw will slide, as that is the trend with forwards over the past few drafts

With our boys due diligence, and more and more I am trusting that, we should get a very good (future) player at 8. It's the next two which will really add to our team. These are just as important as 8 and seem a bit perplexed on the whole focus of the magical first pick.
