2012 Draft Discussion

Clubs do get wind of players other clubs are interested in, which can force their hand. We took Redden earlier than we planned because we found out heading into the draft the Crows were getting hot on him.

We did? Where did you hear that?

Keeping in mind our reservations in relation to injury concerns with Dyson Heppell and after watching Stringer on the odd-occasionthis year - I don't think there is any chance in the world we will take him at 8. Might be time for some to re-jig their wishlist.

Actually I think it was Melbourne who were keen on him. Maybe the Crows were too, but I'm nearly positive the Dees would've taken them with their next pick at that draft.

Can't remember where, but was fairly detailed, might have been something from Kerr and co. IIRC, was pretty much we rated him, and he was away from the eyes of most clubs, playing lower grade or something like that, but towards the end of the year his form was really got and he played a couple of senior games, so he got noticed. Because of this, we took him early because we rated him and wanted him, and didn't want to risk missing him.

True, but this was still Gubby/Brittain territory. That notwithstanding, that's about the size of it.

Redden was highly regarded inside midfielder and rated second behind Hartlett in the SA U18 squad. All this subterfuge about Redden and how we somehow pulled a great robbery is a myth. Melbourne was very keen and so were few other clubs.
Ah, there was no lower grade type scenario in Redden's case.

and Nth Melbourne who were a few picks after us (they took sam wright). Redden was a late 2nd round pick to a 3rd round pick. We had a early 2nd rd and nabbed him, and the rest is history. Great draft move and a bit of suck donkey crap to those who missed out

My draft perference (and im no expert)...but I want either Foot skills or X Factor for our 1st pick.

so either
1) Garlett for his run and carry with explosive pace and X Factor. I remeber thinking this of Rioli and watched us take Henderson instead
2) Sam Mayes...he played for my footy club (bias call yeah as I can say that I have been hit on the chest by a Sam Mayes bullet pass)...but geez, the guy is a great kid, versatile as hell, and has a great kick. Oh,and when he heads back to town I can get easy autographs and photos :D . Seriously, this kid is born to play footy

From my recollection he didn't go to draft camp and only played a couple of U18 matches, so I don't think he was held in that esteem. Either that or it was a poor year for SA. But your point that other clubs knew about him is true. However I would still maintain that he was a steal at that pick.

What is apparent is that the recruiting strategies of clubs aren't as great a secret as might be suspected. Sure they might hold some cards close to their chest, but there's very few true smokies. Someone like Justin Clarke or Lachlan Keeffe would be the closest you get these days given the amount of talent identification that goes on.

Apparently 'about 10 clubs' were sniffing around Clarke, and didn't AFLQ head get sacked for his part in the Keeffe shenanigans?

my dad spoke with Patty k - and his parents they r neighbours . patty k does want to come home he is home sick . patty k told my dad he was to be the j brown replacement , they put him on a weight programme however patty k stated it slowed down his speed and was felt the idea did not work , Voss has stated him as required player.my dad who worked with several afl clubs has spoken on behalf of patty k to carlton and richmond , carlton advised my dad they will discuss patty k on monday with mick as to wether or not they will make a play or not for him.if he stays he will probably leave next year when his contract is finished. my dad introduced patty k to carlton well before he got drafted to brisbane

wait and see straight from patty k mouth . My dads started off at Fitzroy knows a lot of people
Sorry but that story is very hard to believe. I have never seen Karnezis crash a pack, he doesn't have a big leap on him or really good pace, you need to be able to do at least one of these things well to be a key forward and if he has already lost pace with the extra weight put on then he's only going to get slower. His fitness has a long way to go as well and in the reserves he played in the midfield, why would he play there if he was going to be our next key forward?
