2012 Draft Discussion

I've gotten to the stage where I could realistically see Toumpas getting past GWS, Melbourne and even the Dogs. But it becomes a fantasy to expect that he'd get past Port. They'd take him over just about anyone else in this draft, I think.

Quick, someone find a salary cap issue at Port and get them stripped of 7.

Hmm If Grundy was there as well I think there is a chance they could select him. Rob Kerr does seem to think that opinions are divided between recruiters a lot more in this years batch compared to other years. We will see what happens. I just have a feeling come draft day GWS will pass on Toumpas and decide to take some risks considering the over flowing players they have who are certain to become good to fantastic players. I think Melbourne are set on Wines like Richmond were set on Dustin Martin and then the Bulldogs, Port and Lions could do anything.

Geez, all these machiavellian schemes to get toumpas or stinger or grundy or jaksch or whitfield to fall to pick 8 will give you guys ulcers just relax and let it all unfold.

How I learned to stop worrying and love the draft.

Emma Quayle

A few talented midfield utilities could also be around - Sam Mayes is believed to be the club's favourite (Port Adelaide at pick 7 is also keen on Mayes, one of the best kicks in the draft) with Jackson Macrae a slight chance to be there, too, should the Bulldogs overlook him. There's a tiny chance Lachie Plowman, the most popular key back in the field, will sneak through too, although Jaksch seems the preferred option.

Docherty didn't play as a lead-up forward though, he played as a HBF and that's basically a midfield position without it being one.

History shows that smaller lead-up players generally don't succeed at AFL level. Therefore you'd have to assume he'd need to play some midfield. He's quoted as knowing that. But he really hasn't played that much there. That, coupled with a poor U18 champs in a good SA team raises a few flags, more than those who we'd be looking at. They've all got them: Stringer, broken leg; Macrae, only come good this year; Jaksch, has all the tools but maybe hasn't quite put it together yet and so on. I just Mayes has a few more question marks than those others.

If I had money on it, I'd say he'll become a Dale Thomas or Steve Johnson kind of player. Nothing to be sneezed at, but I think our immediate needs for high quality players are in the tall forward department and in and around the clearances -we need an extractor and a break-away player. I think the other three fit in those categories, more so than Mayes.

Obviously that's looking at a needs-based approach. For all we know, we might rate Mayes the 4th best player in the pool and will go best available.

Based on this TFB, I'm interested to hear your thoughts on selecting Membrey with pick 22. Similar to how you've described Mayes, but as a key forward he does fit our needs.

Also in EQ's article she says under Port's sections:

But the choice, at the moment, seems to be down to Sam Mayes, a half-forward/midfield option with excellent foot skills, and Brodie Grundy, the draft's best, most competitive ruckman. It is an interesting call and will depend a lot on what the Power sees Lobbe, Renouf and Redden delivering, moving forward. Many would argue Grundy would go ahead of them quickly, and that his understanding of how to play as a forward makes him especially valuable.

Thought the second half of the last sentence was interesting in terms of our pick.

Kind of a toss up though with Longer, if your thinking we should nab Grundy...If Port get him, expect to see Lobbe retire next year or Redden being delisted.

Be interesting to hear people's thoughts on how Longer and Grundy compare as forwards.

Would prefer someone who is a bit taller, but I wouldn't be opposed.

Any love on here for Nick Vlastuin. From all reports the kid is a fearless onballer, natural leader & loves the physical stuff. Anyone know if he is on the clubs radar?

I actually don't mind the HF role that Mayes plays, and I think we don't really have a player like that. Someone who is a marking target up forward, and can roam up field. Kicking will add some class to the team too. Perfect type to have as part of the midfield, is tallish for a mid, and can rotate forward and still have an impact, not just rest. Will be happy if we get him.

Also adds that link from the back line to the forwards. Foot skills look very nice which we need, would be very happy to have him and even though his championships were quiet from all reports the boy has been playing seniors in the SANFL and holding his own. Ability to play in the midfield is there also.

has there been anyone, we haven't been linked to now's its back to Mayes, with our picks we have been linked to Shaw, Jaksch, Vlastuin, Macrea, Smith, Wood, Garlett Longergan, and now Mayes anybody eles we been linked to that i'm forgetting everytime I see a new mock draft it seems we linked to someone-eles it might even change on draft day.

Can someone please confirm the draft time (can't seem to find it?).

Is it in the morning or at night??

TIA.
