2012 Draft Discussion

We might go safe and take a Tassie boy at 33, they never want to go home, and we have had good success there of late. Thurlow and Siggins are apparently "of interest".

Just need Melbourne to relinquish their picks and Hogan to us.

Fingers crossed for O'Brien at our pick 23.

That's one of my biggest hopes at least. They'd been sinking since he started being linked to Adelaide just before our pick.

Huh? Do they rate next years draft better?

I would suggest they are going to be picking significantly higher than 20 next year and weren't liking what they were seeing overly much at 20 this year. This year they also have Crouch to work into the line up and not having to find an extra spot is probably not a terrible thing.

I thought Kennedy would fall no further than Adelaide's pick 20. Not as certain about that now although I concede the odds are very much against him still being there at our (now) pick 23. I'd be very happy if the unlikely happened and he fell that far.

Why would you relinquish your first two draft picks as a sign of goodwill when the AFL have not handed down its findings?

Something doesn't smell right.

Giving up pick 20 is not exactly going to ruin them either.

Agree with Quigley, they aren't losing much by putting their hand up, it's not like they need much from this years draft, very easy for them to give them up in the hopes of reducing the penalty. Just hope the AFL doesn't fall for it, sure they have given up picks, but 20 and 54 isn't a huge deal.

Goodwill?
Very clever I thought... they're obviously going to lose at least one year of picks, and their picks this year are very likely to be worse than their picks next year/year after, for the following reasons:
  • this year they did well off an easy draw
  • they've now lost their top fwd in Tippett
  • They weren't embroiled in controversy all year
So from that measure, the picks for 2013 and 2014 will be earlier. Next year, I'd imagine them being about 8 on the ladder, not 2. Add to this:
  • They already traded away their 2nd round pick for Angus Graham and a 3rd rounder
So, they gave up a late first and mid 3rd rounder, and get to use a 3rd and 4th rounder, and use their 5th to pick up Joyce in the PSD...

So effectively, they get Angus Graham, sacrifice 2 picks (1 average pick, 1 3rd round), still get picks from the 3rd round, get credit for one year served on whatever their sentence is, and they get goodwill for doing it all voluntarily.

Very shrewd if you ask me...

I reckon it's pretty straight-forward. The only pick Adelaide has of consequence is pick 20. They're giving that up so they can basically have a slap on the wrist if they're only excluded from this year's draft, or a slap on the wrist + one write-off if excluded from next year's as well, instead of missing out on a whole one or two drafts which could be seriously devestating.

Smart move I reckon. Still think there is a good chance they'll get done for next year too tho.

Yeah. I reckon this is more about preserving their involvement in the 2014 draft. As a top 4 side, they probably see themselves as less reliant on the draft for the next couple of years anyway. Obviously, you'd much rather have the picks than not but they are a pretty young group that isn't going to require regeneration soon - most of their core would be 26 or under.

Smart move. Guessing they figured they get wacked for two drafts. Give up top picks in this one and that leaves them with only next year.

So they go from 20, 54, 64 to 62, 81 and 95. Seems like a big downgrade but if you take out Rookie upgrades its more like 60, 71 and 75. In whats been described as a fairly even draft after the top 20 or so its certainly possible that they get 2 out of 3 of the players they were originally targeting. In which case they limit the damage pretty well. In future drafts too they will be excluded from trading draft picks, whereas they have already done that this year so the damage is once again reduced.

Smart move
