I
Just realised that Foxtel will be showing coverage at 7pm so will be fun to watch it instead of listening on the radio.
personally prefer the radio. On the tv last year they seemed to interview draftees while other picks are happening. I found this annoying. I will be listening to he radio with laptop.

Will probably watch the first 10 picks as they tend to do them slower then can always mute the TV and put on the radio until our picks are up.

They pretty much did the same last year when it was an open secret who the first 5 selections were going to be.

I'd say that they don't lose too much by revealing this. The clubs with picks in the top dozen would have put that much work into contingency planning. If a surprise is sprung, they just move onto plan B, C etc.

GWS may actually take it a step further. I can see some merit in them approaching other top 10 clubs with a "I'll show you mine if you show me yours" offer. The Lions, for example, would love to know who is definitely off the table because they can put a line through those guys and really hone down their strategy. And it helps GWS who, with pick 12, would be advantaged by getting as much info from the clubs with picks 4-11. It may be that Silvagni now has a pretty good idea of how the top 11 will pan out. This obviously relies on a bit of game theory.

FWIW, I don't think clubs would tell flat out lies to one another. Remember that these organisations have to deal with each other constantly. We're seeing with the trade period that goodwill and a reputation as a fair dealer is very important to clubs. They might use misinformation via the media but I don't reckon they would flat out lie to one another.

In short, I'd be pretty confident that the top 3 is set in stone.
And GWS know that what goes around comes around. They won't always be in the position of controlling the top of the draft and they may want some favours themselves down the track. In that context, there is no down-side to them revealing picks 1 to 3 and maybe some browny points to be earned for later on.

I watched Foxtel last year and had the HeraldSun website going so at least I knew the picks that were going down while the interviews were happening.

Gee I reckon you'd want to be careful doing that. Might be construed as draft tampering if you happen to say a little too much.

In other news:

Oliver Wines not counting on joining Jack Viney.

"I'd love to line up against Jack and go head-to-head with him," he said.
"I think it would be a fair contest."

I reckon Wines going head-to-head with anyone would be a David vs Goliath affair.

Last year you could switch over to just listen to the picks by pushing one of the coloured buttons. Hopefully they do the same this year otherwise I will be listening to the radio as well.

It says that you can press the red button for picks 30+.

Guessing they start doing interviews after 30 and if you want you can continue to see the picks instead.

A bit left field, but I was thinking whether it would be better to have the draft over an extended period, eg. a team has 24 hours to choose their player instead of two minutes. I haven't thought through all the logistics, but it would keep the AFL in the spotlight for a lot longer and give supporters more reason to engage with their clubs in the off season.

First thought is about how the players would feel having to wait weeks to find out where they'll be next year.

Not sure I agree with that. There's nothing in the rules about keeping your draft selections secret.

If the conversation was more about "if you pass on X, then I'll take Y", then yeah, we're heading into dangerous territory.

Yep....took me a while to figure out what did what with the sports active buttons.

My first thought was that the clubs would be reluctant to agree to something that delays the arrival of new players.

Draft is 5:40 to 7:30 local time. I'm pretty sure coverage on tv starts at 6, so maybe they are doing a delay to squeeze in the interviews, then pick back up around pick 30 live.

AFL website has in previous years had the draft tracker showing the picks as they happen, along with a radio stream. Radio streams might be live. If the AFL want to make it more of a TV event, they should do the top 10 picks, jumper presentation, interview and highlights for those players. Gives time for coverage to so those interviews without missing live picks. They can then do breaks Inbetween rounds as well.

They could certainly do more to make it a bigger TV event.

“Right now, we don’t know who the Lions are taking at Pick No.8,” Hadley said.
“But we’ve certainly prepared in a way that we’ll take a particular person if he’s available."
OK, this is getting frustrating...

"We don't know who we're taking at 8"... excellent, that means not as likely Jaksch or a reacher - more likely just best available based on other clubs.

"But... we'll take a particular person if he's available." ... crap. This would indicate that they have a set target who they want, regardless of other players who may be slightly better... makes me think they will take Jaksch.

Are the club just playing with my emotions :-S

I'm not getting that. There has been next to no-one suggesting that Jaksch will go higher than 8. So "if he's available" wouldn't appear to apply to him. I'm more inclined to think that they are talking about someone who is regularly talked about in the 4-7 range - Wines, Mayes, Menzel, Macrae are the ones I'm thinking of.

They will have their sights on someone like Wines or Stringer, someone they don't expect to be there, but if for some reason is they will jump on them. Unlikely to be Jaksch, unless he was favourite to go top 5. They have their eyes on a slider.

If a club had a pick around the eight mark, and they were really keen on a specific player, Stringer for example, and they knew another club before them, eg. the Bulldogs, were also very keen, then said club with pick eight would probably keep their cards very close to their chest, hypothetically.

The way I read that was actually for Mayes, given the links being made to him, with an unspoken exception being that if there's an unexpected slider, e.g. Wines, then that plan could change.

My ticket says the event starts at 5:40, but the Fox coverage is meant to be live. It wouldn't surprise me if the first 20 minutes included a welcome, a speech from Andy D, and maybe a few other formalities, and then the selecting got underway just after 6 when the TV coverage starts.

Also, this article links us to Dean Towers. Has anyone else heard that connection? Must admit it's new to me. Not sure how well he suits our needs, to be honest.

Hawthorn, the Brisbane Lions, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs are in the mix to snaffle the raking right-footer.
