2012 Draft Discussion

Meh. I'm over listening to the club now... i'm remembering last year... theory was we were taking Tomlinson or Greene. We took Longer, and were told after that Taylor Adams was the other in the mix at that pick... this year, we're linked with Jaksch and Macrae. We'll probably end up taking Lonergan or Vlastuin or Simpson, just because we haven't really be strongly linked to them.

There is a good chance that Mason Shaw or Spencer White will be there at pick 33. Pick 23 we either draft Garlett, if his there or draft Tanner Smith or Clurey. I don't rate Wood and O'Brien would be gone by our pick. Freo, Swans, Pies and the Bulldogs are interested in O'Brien.

Can't see us passing on mayes if available.
senior SA footballer who is good enough to play forward flank next season,
and midfield as time goes by.

I remember we were very interested in Daniel Menzel in his draft year. Our recruiter at the time, I can't even remember who it was now, said so after the draft but we didn't have a high pick(2009 we selected Barlett with our first pick at pick 29 I think?). I wonder if we are just as interested in Troy Menzel. I am getting more and more keen on picking either Stringer or Menzel if they are there at 8. I think we need to take the risk. GC and GWS coming into the AFL has ruined our chances to select an absolute elite prospect during our rebuilding stage. Some recruiters seem to rate Stringer and Menzel top 3 prospects. If the club has done the necessary medical checks on them and they tested well, I would be very happy if they became Lions players! Pick up Dayle Garlett at 23(another very risky player because of off field problems) and that could be two top 5 prospects at picks 8 and 23. Potentially absolute steals!!!! I don't think we will select Dayle Garlett though and as hard as this is for me to say, I am not sure if it would be worth it. If we did pick him up though and he cleaned up his act off the field and worked hard to fulfil his on field potential we could have a star in the mould of Cyril Rioli on our hands. I trust the club in full though and will be happy with whoever they pick!

My fingers are crossed for Spencer White only for the excitement factor. He might never turn into anything, but he will at least be entertaining in the reserves. (although I do know we should have much higher hopes for our draft picks)

Shaw will probably be there at 33. I think White will be there for a fair few picks after that as well... One article saying you play like Buddy doesn't make you Buddy, and the recruiters don't fall for that (just ask Zyrus Manson). I'd be happy with Wood at 23. O'Brien is a chance to be gone, and I've heard the rumours of those interested in him, but at the same time, I'm not believing half of what I hear, and while I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone, I don't consider it a certainty.

I wouldn't mind us taking Garlett, but I reckon the Lions will be one of the teams with a line through his name as no chance. Smith or Clurey, I could see, but I don't think it's Garlett or a KPD by any stretch.

The Shaw slide is crazy, even in comparison to the Grundy slide. Shaw dropped from a top 10 prospect to a pick in the 30s or later. I've documented myself as never being a fan of his at pick 8, but the fact that the club could still be passing on him at 23 and 32 is mind-boggling to me. If we do take Siggins over Shaw at 32, that'll be my dummy spit moment.

Not to keen on Jaksch to be honest.

Would prefer Menzel/Wines/Mayes.

Got a feeling that's what we'll pick from at pick 8.

Can see it being one of Wines/Mayes with Menzel as the smokey. Very dependant on what happens above us.

Think at 23 it will be best available KPD, probably Tanner Smith, with another mid like Nick Graham at 32.

Interesting to see if there are any pauses between the top 8 picks as that should tell us if the clubs have been talking or if there truly are still decisions being made on the run.

Yeah, I reckon the same, but I didn't get to see any WA games this year, so i've only been going on what I've heard. And I didn't like reaching to 8 for him, but now I don't know... is the old ranking of him ~15 right, or was that just oversold, and he's really worth ~35? I just can't get a read. He's one where i'm just going to have to trust Kerr & co.

and before anyone starts - yes, i know all picks we have to trust the recruiters, because they're the professionals... but if you're going to whinge every time we question the recruiters and say that we ranked someone else higher, don't go to a forum - just read the club website. The entire point of forums is to give your opinion, no matter how uninformed i may be.

I have no inside information whatsoever, but I sense tantrums in the air. There are a lot of expectations around that can only be described as being as "fever pitch".

I feel that selecting Jaksch is potentially the biggest powder keg of angst here. Hopefully people don't lose the plot entirely if it falls that way. Our recruitment staff have released several statements in the past few weeks telling us that everything is process driven. They aren't going to lose their cool or "blow it" tonight. Whatever they decide will have reasons behind it. We just have to trust their process from here.

Doesn't mean that we can't provide our own subjective assessments of the selections, but hopefully it stays constructive.

For those in Brisbane driving at the time, what's the radio station?

I'd be stunned if any radio station in Brisbane broadcast the AFL draft.

If you have a smart phone, you should be able to listen to SEN though with the TuneIn Radio app.

I would love to have seen him play one game with the Vic Metro midfield feeding him the footy.

He had a horrible Championship but by the accounts of the WA guys, he had a great Colts season. That has to mean something... but I'm not qualified to say what exactly. :)

KJ is the one player I don't want. Calling yourself unique?! Come on seriously?!

This.

WA did not exactly have the elite midfield this year as reflected in the draft tonight. Only one WA player is predicted to go in the top 20. Simpson as opposed to Vic Metro, virtually the entire midfield group will be drafted.
Shaw on talent is a top 10. There is something else going on that we are not privy that has him sliding (predicted) beyond 30. IMO.

Wines has just been seen backstage in the green-room, practicing and rote-learning the words to the Lions club song. You heard it here first.

My wishful thinking...

Two words, he only had to say two words yesterday to any Port recruiter... pissant town! ;)

Would be interested to hear Quigs/Irel/Offsider assess Shaw's spectrum of AFL potential (best case/worst case)... I.e are we talking...

Boom/Bust, Very Good/Bust, Boom/serviceable...

On the way down to the draft with whatboutbob and weevil. If the shitty traffic lets us.
