I'm not saying homesickness will be a factor, but perhaps that could have been a reason for his intitial reaction. After all, he probably thought he was a big shot to go to Power at 7 and stay in Adelaide. He's a consumate professional though, he would have come to terms with a move pretty quickly.

Yep. Of course he wanted to be drafted to the Power or the Crows. Any normal 18 year old kid would rather stay in his home city with his family and friends than move to the other side of the country.

But that is not the same thing as being unhappy in Brisbane and desperately wanting to leave.

I think the inside/outside midfielder breakdown deserves it's own thread. Personally I think there is definitely a spot on our list for a young in-and-under midfielder. I think there is a big difference between an 'inside-capable' midfielder who is comfortable in traffic and does good defensive work, like Redden, and a genuine below the knees extractor, like Black.

Do you need someone like that? With Ball out this year, who played that role for Collingwood? More a philosophical question because I do agree with your sentiment that our list would be improved by someone playing that role.

However, I don't think we can discount the likelihood that internal development will find someone to play that role. We've got guys who have a number of the attributes to play the role - just need someone to bring the whole package together (not that we'll get another Black).

We've then hopefully got Conway who is pretty much what you described. Obviously, we hope that he retains his promise and form over the next 12 months.

Seeing as Browny isn't overseas, I imagine he'll have these 3 around on the piss at his place and settled in by Sunday. 3 "forwards" having alone time with the legend, they won't rather be anywhere else.:)

- our list is starting to look a lot more balanced. Add Conway (a hard nut inside mid) and Tickner (a likely CHB) and that balance improves further IMO.

Bob or whoever else knows; have we indicated or rather, is it likely that we will be drafting these two boys, who I assume did not qualify for this years draft? Also, are both those boys in our academy or can they also be taken by Gold Coast?

Appreciate your feedback.:thumbsu:

As I understand it virtually every interstate kid is asked the same thing by recruiters, what is his attitude to living away from home and no doubt they all say they're OK with it. Unless there's good reason not to believe them then that's been dealt with and they draft or don't draft based on all the relevant criteria. For every kid who wants to go home ten decide to stay. At the draft stage it's impossible to say which one's will want to go home and making decisions based on a vibe would be sheer lunacy.

Both those boys (plus a few other promising ones) are in our academy and qualify for the draft next year. We get first dibs on them in the same manner as the father/son bidding. So unless another club rates them much higher than us or come this point next year we don't rate them all, they should be Lions players.

I don't know if 'need' is the right word, but I definitely reckon you're better off with one of those players than without one. Collingwood of course have an extraordinary midfield and when you have Pendlebury, Swan and Beams winning the ball it can make up for a lot of possible weaknesses.

Of course, Sydney won the premiership this year without a genuine elite key forward, but no one is in any doubt that we need one of those. In fact, the single biggest improvement in Sydney's team this year was that Kennedy emerged as the league's best extractor.

Let's move on from the 'unhappy at drafting' talk please guys. We don't have an issue with people expressing their concerns about the draft, but keep the personal attacks out of it and please don't be offended or feel attacked when people offer a different opinion. Cheers guys.

Haso's not happy about being passed over in the draft...

I think some people (on both 'sides') forget that this is a forum for discussion.

One should expect to be engaged.

If you want a platform just to rant unopposed then get a blog (or use the vent thread).

'Minority' opinions are fantastic to explore new ideas - but those espousing them should be prepared to back them up, especially if they could be seen as 'attacking' the club, because of course they're going to be challenged.

Just a general warning to everyone. Haso has now requested numerous times to leave the personal attacks out of it. We're getting very close to issuing formal warnings. Cut the crap. Go the post and not the poster.

Think Mayes is an excellent selection for the Lions. Will be the successor to Simon Black in the midfield.

Paparone has all the right attributes to become a quality player too.

Wonderful to read a post that is positive towards Sam.
Mayes was always going to the lions, if available (a mistake GWS will come to regret)
This guy will be one of those marquee types, contracted, 7-8 big ones p/r for 3-4 yrs type thing.

Where is Kerr's post draft write up! I'm looking forward to it more than I was the draft.

I believe Kerr's piece came out on the Tuesday after the draft, which I believe was also on a Thursday last year.

Im hopeful that Mayes will be a good player, but I would have thought that a comparison to Black is pretty strange due to their different skill sets, interested to know why the comparison to Simon?

Looks good in a Lions guernsey albeit the wrong guernsey

A draft wrap from Rob Kerr in video form is up on the Lions site now.

Was really interesting to hear his thoughts on how Paparone will be utilised. Makes me excited. His running capacity could enable him to be really effective as that running marking linkman. Could be a good point of difference in our team and a real weapon, especially later in games.

Clearly he is seen more as a Riewoldt style, far-ranging type CHF rather than a Browny type who stays a little closer to home.

I'm excited.
