Live Event 2012 Draft Night Discussion

So I read with interest the complaints last night that we said we were taking 3 mids in the draft and then stuffed it. Then I read this morning that FJ believes that 3 of the 4 kids are hopefully going to develop into mids. Guess that says something about jumping to conclusions.

Yeah this thread was funny reading. All these so called experts complaining that they had never heard of anyone, weren't predicted to go, and were the wrong positional type. A quick glance at the BF Phantom shows all the kids we picked were gone by 39, with 1 inside the top 20, 2 in the 20s and 1 in the 30s. Not saying the BF Phantom has any huge authority (though all those that took part are very knowledgeable) but it clearly shows that all these players were well and truly on the radar of draft experts/recruiters. And again, from reading the descriptions it was clear McIntosh wouldn't be a KPP at AFL level, and that McDonough had the potential to push into the midfield.

Good luck to all that got drafted. Don't know much about you (except for Vlastuin, who I'm ecstatic about), but can't wait to see you in the Y & B.

Look I am a bright-sider so after looking at the write-ups and highlight clips, I will go with .....

Vlastuin = Voss The Bull
McIntosh = Embley The Big Wingman
McBean = Fletcher McBeanpole the Swingman
McDonough = Chapman Hyperactive Goalkicking, Inside-Mid Nugget

Ya feel me?

Yep agree and im also glad we passed on Grundy (good luck to the pies trying to fit him and Witts in one side) also glad we didnt risk taking hop along Mensel.

I admit I knew nothing of McIntosh before last night but just going by the highlights on the website I immediately thought Clinton Young/Andrew Embley type player where he could drift into defense but play that tall wingman type roll.

Will never be a KPP due to his size but his reading of the ball and vision up field could turn him into a great player.

I like our picks McDonough has me excited the most just like Arnot last year, the chance they could be gun players because they won't be given silver service like a first round/early 2nd round picks!

Because you're usually too busy quoting others and telling them how to think, having your own "sook" about people being too "negative" and chastising them for voicing a concern without having the correct "qualifications".

Tell me? Should everyone who expresses concern about the economy work in the department of finance or have a degree in economics too?
Depends if they are concerned about the economy over the past two years, or the economy over the next five years ;)

Guess its time to throw my 2 cents in after a few beers (& lurking for the last few hrs) not that anyone gives a f@#k...
Cotch, Dusty, Conca in the middle. Add Tuck (Arnott\Verrier possible replacements when he's gone). With Ellis, Morris & now Vlas as possible rotations off half back.. that's the making of one tough midfield group. Not to mention all pretty good users of the ball.
Have I missed anyone?
This guys says Hai

Hate it how Geelong drafted Brodie Grundy. Stephen Wells is the ******* man. We are all destined for mediocrity. We need to spend the FTF to get this guy to the club. Wouldn't have missed out on Grundy at pick 9 if he was recruiter.
Hacked?

So.....
After time to reflect for mine it looks like we have picked:
4 potential duel position, great kick, solid character types.
The S.A. kid also looks to have that "X - factor" a lot of posters seem to cream their jeans about.

A good spread of positions, some ready to play and some a work in progress.

Coming into the era of subs/capped interchanges I think the team have made some very smart pickups here..

Get down to Punt Road fellas, embrace the history and pride in our jumper, tear into pre season, learn Dimma's gameplan and knock the door down for a senior gig.

Get around these kids fellow posters.

Look i have copped a lot of flack and maybe it is founded- we are all draft experts arnt we?
I am one who just happens to live overseas. If these kids turn out I will be the first to eat my hat. I hope they do.
as I have said before this is our most crucial draft and we seem to have invested in guys we can build.
agree with riskinghead, lets go forth and embrace the tigers. one more cleanout next year and we should have a serviceable list. go tigers.

Surely it has to be something more than an Instagram account. I saw it and it just looks like any 18 year old kids pictures. Sure the one with the beer and smoke looked bad, but that can't be enough to make a kid go from a 1st round pick to not picked up at all.
Exactly. Has to be something serious behind that. A club with a settled, mature list and strong culture (Swans, Pies, Cats?) would've surely taken the gamble with a later pick if he was seen as "salvageable".

For those still saying we should rookie him, surely with our emphasis on character, and the fact that not a single club would touch him, would have to admit he's got about as much chance as Dan Connors of getting a rookie spot with us next year.

If Richmond had Selected Membrey or Atkins with #42 and Taken McDonough with #87 and Garlett with #100

#9 - Vlastuin
#31- McIntosh
#33 - McBean
#42 - Membrey
#87 - McDonough
#100 - Garlett

We would have Rated our Draft as the best of all the teams, And could of virtually claimed we got 4 1st Round Kids in Vlastuin,McBean,Garlett,Membrey
I liked Membrey... was keen. In a way, McDonough looks to have similar attributes (albeit a few inches shorter), and shown more potential as a mid. Wouldn't expect McDonough to have still been there at 87.

The fact that every single club passed on Garlett should tell you something. Don't want.

I think one more year for McGuane (as depth) is about right - a couple of younger guys should have gone past him by then, and be ready to really play their role at AFL level as required. Hopefully Grimes and Griff start to show some better durability, and we shouldn't be seeing Luke again outside of Coburg games.

We drafted a backman who doesn't seem tall enough or have the natural build to ever be a serious KP prospect.
Been said a few times now, which you've probably seen, but the club sees him as a tall outside mid.

But re: not tall enough to be a serious KP prospect - he's 192cm... same height as Scarlett, Glass, and, erm... Luke McGuane . Essentially the same height as Dylan Grimes and Nick Riewoldt (couldn't be fagged searching for more examples) who are listed as 193cm.

One final thought... pretty much every player outside maybe one or two, are going to have one or two question marks, or weaknesses in their games/character. While it's easy to sit back and question why we took player X when player Y was available, it's clear that all 4 guys we took are very good kicks of the ball - something which is clearly valued very highly. Along with character.

We won't rookie him and doubtful anyone else will. There is more than the Instagram pictures that's for sure and reason he failed so badly at the Combine. I won't say exactly but got fed the information yesterday.

The kid has more than growing up to do.

What did he get at Combine?

Plus competitiveness.

haha chocco says 'your wrong'.

edit: i see your trolling sorry.

Did you hear - forget who it was - someone on Foxtel say words to the effect that Vlastuin was moved down back because he was having trouble getting the ball out in the middle? Considering we want him to eventually play inside mid, wouldn't that be a bit of a concern?
no because the comment came from brad johnson what the **** would he know about vlaustin??

Could be wrong but pretty sure it wasn't one of the hosts, might've even been one of our blokes - mind you I was still aimlessly walking in out of the loungeroom muttering to myself at that stage.

But if it was someone like King - then yeah, I'd disregard.

i think it was 1 of the blokes in for special comments for sen but he did say they wanted him to learn to get more outside ball instead of just inside ball however they didnt mention he injury. dont know how valid the statement was ether.
