AFL Club
Melbourne
Toumpas
Viney
Kent
Jones
Terlich
Clisby

That's Fantastic. If Clisby wasn't suspended, all of them would've been playing in our last game as first 22 players.

You can argue that Hogan and Barry are draft picks too - Hogan is HOGAN and Barry seems to be progressing nicely at Casey.

If we can have another draft like that this year, we'll start moving on up sooner rather than later.

Pity Neeld did what he did in the trade/free agency period.

Yeah, I reckon it's going to be a hit for us.

I still think that our 08' and 09' crops will come on for us (Blease, Trengove, Watts and Tappy - hopefully Strauss).

Credit to Neeld and Todd Viney for this, I heard Todd was big on creating massive amounts of player ranking areas - all within 'the four pillars' or something.

Viney the pick of that lot obviously, probably followed by Terlich who seems to have secured his half-back/pocket role. Both hard at it.

Still not completely convinced by Toumpas yet, but he is young and has lots of time.

Love M Jones' endeavour and he's been solid for us in an annus horribilis but if we draft good midfielders he may be squeezed out. But nothing wrong with some healthy competition for spots.

Kent and Clisby had their moments but are still not proven yet. Kent goes missing for too long, Clisby is probably the one I remember least about but they'll both get more chances.

All those guys have done enough to give hope of further improvement, so yep so far so good for that crew.

Personally I really like some of the things he did this year...although I agree that he needs more development. One of the things I would like to see him do more is run and carry when he has space and kick the ball more. His kicking skills are one of his biggest weapon, but too many times he stops and hand passes it to a bloke 3 meters away.

If Roos is on board he will build his confidence and we could end up with a gun outside running mid.

Matt Jones has been the one for me. I WTFd hard when he was drafted but he has been damn good in a shit midfield.

Agree about Kent - he needs to get more of the pill. But he finishes well and seems to have the right attributes. More available mids, and our forward line at full power should help him out a lot.

Viney alone made this a successful draft

I think Toumpas has the tools the develop nicely as well

Terlich was a find, we got excellent value out of him (and M Jones for that matter)

Kent / Clisby have futures too

You're right though, trade / FA period...*shudder*

Drafting has never been Melbourne's problem, it's development.

Melbourne could have drafted Joel Selwood, Buddy, Pendlebury and Beams and they would have turned out like Trengove, Mitch Thorp, Cale Morton and Simon Buckley. We've had enough promising rookie seasons, it's seasons 2-5 that have been borked.

We're nowhere near out of the woods yet with Viney, Toumpas, Hogan et al. We had the holy trinity in Watts, Trengove and Scully once, look how that went to crap.

Agree / disagree

Some of the drafting has been horrific....HORRIFIC

Development has been lacking a lot though

Certain players will make it no matter what (i.e. Joel Selwood, Buddy, Pendlebury)

Disagree with some of that.

Selwood was going to make it unless injuries got in the way, guys like Judd, Ball and Hodge too.

But Buddy had massive attitude problems and Pendlebury needed significant grooming from Malthouse to become the elite player he is.

Buddy had / has enough natural talent that he would've been successful

Pendlebury has enough drive / determination to make it no matter what, Malthouse just made him elite

It's hard to pinpoint whether it's horrid drafting or abysmal development that has screwed us over.

When you consider how many first or second round draft picks we've taken on over the past 6-8 years, as well as how many have failed to reach their potential, or have turned out to be simply ordinary, it's bloody damning.

Personally I feel it has to be a lack of player development, the evidence being in the early years that some of our players have had, ie. Mckenzie when he was averaging around 6-8 tackles per game plus 20 odd disposals, in 2010/11? Now everyone rates him solely as a tagger with awful disposal efficiency. Players just should not go backwards that rapidly, it doesn't make any sense.

Maybe it's our strength and conditioning department, or poor management of players post-injuries.

Look at Jordie, Jurrah, Scully, Trengove. All were flying in their rookie seasons, and then all haven't really been the same since their major injuries. Even Gysberts started off with a few flyers.

All of the players we've drafted have shown something though.

Jordie Gysberts - starred for his first few games
Cale Morton - best first year player 2008. Played very well in 2009 too, until shoulder injury in 2010.
Tapscott - played really well in 2011, esp. first game v Sydney
Blease - 5 goals v Saints, other v. good performances
Strauss - was doing quite well before breaking his leg
Trengove - fantastic in 2010 and 2011
Watts - undisputed talent, even WC would have picked him at #1 ahead of Naitanui.

They've all shown enough to excite us, except for Lucas Cook. Even Addam Maric had his moments. We just haven't been able to sustain improvement, or have even encouraged them to decline.

It looked we liked had cleaned up at the 2009 draft after one year - Scully (2nd in rising star), Trengove, Gysberts, Tapscott... only Fitzpatrick looked iffy. It's not looking that good now!!

I think it's too early to say 2012 was a hit, just like it's ridiculously premature to say we should have picked Wines over the Toump (a common Demonland theme).. but it looks like Viney took targetted low-risk players and that's exactly the way he should have played it.

Gysberts should still be on our list and should've been playing all this year, imo.
