From the Essendon site. Nice work to whoever made this.
The weapon had him doing bench press the whole two weeks?

Reckon you've nailed it there. Gone for a heap of mature players because he's been there a while now. Fail to make the finals this year and the pressure will be on.
Lose in the first round again with all the mature retreads and the pressure will be on...

Actually... thinking about his recruiting theme this year. Do you think that he got in a bunch of mature aged players because we mentally scarred them so badly in the second game last year where our VFL side beat their AFL side, that he feels the need to try and get some guys in who weren't part of that side?

Interesting thought

What the club said
National Draft

"Menzel could have gone pick two, possibly even pick one. Both of his knee injuries were collision injuries. We think we can get him up and going pretty quickly and that he can have an impact straight away. It changed a bit during the week, things can change so quickly, but we felt two days ago we would get him and we were pumped," recruiting manager Shane Rogers said.

Pre-Season & Rookie Draft
"After an injury interrupted first season at Carlton, Andrew showed some really promising signs in 2012. We are looking forward to seeing his growth with a solid pre-season under his belt. Jaryd has really impressed us with his improvement this season, we kept a keen eye on his progress and he was consistently one of Norwood's best all year. Everyone is excited to have him back at Carlton." - Recruiting manager Shane Rogers

The kid has made his decision and shouldn't stop posing as a footballer.

Had a chance to get involved with Essendon but couldn't wait to get back to Perth to get himself "cooked" again.

No sympathy from me.

Nothing sadder than talking to guys in their 30s, crying into there beer how they were better junior footballers than someone like a Brett Ratten. Have sympathy for them when it is a result of an injury but not when your dealt a winning hand and mess it up.

You lot and your conditional sympathies. Some people are just as terrified of success as failure. He may well have sabotaged his opportunities (consciously or otherwise) for reasons even he doesn't understand. When you make it to the big-time the judging of your character ramps up even more. Pretty scary for a kid who has been criticized probably all his life.

As for words like "some people never learn", this young man has plenty of time to "learn". His opportunities at AFL level have genuinely diminished but he could grow to become a great leader of his people Michael Long style or any other career he chooses. Understandably clubs are shying away from "flawed" youngsters these days. It's one of the reasons we have complaints about the lack of characters in the game.

Wise words. :thumbsu:

Garlett is such a fascinating story, We draft Temay with pick 35 who apparently got torn a new one when trying to tag Garlett. He was rated a top 2 talent in the country as a 17 year old and a top 15 this year (even with his bad training and off field behavior) and no one is willing to give him a go.

You just want to grab him, slap him across the face and try and talk some sense into him.

So frustrating!

The documentary three boys dreaming showed just how tough it can be...

You're right about the lack of characters now a days, all too sanitised,
Dayle may still get an opportunity down the track

I'm suggesting people play conservative before dropping the "I have no sympathy" anvil. Correct, I have little knowledge of his background, but just like a couple of DJ's in Sydney might be advised, I'd be thinking long and hard before presuming a person's full story. They presumed no-one with a sensitive/fragile psyche would be involved in their actions, people presume Garlett is just an ungrateful muck-up. All I'm saying is be conservative with your expectations of others when dealing with them, directly or otherwise.

Very interesting interview with Robert Walls, Ken Hunter, David Parkin and the late Neil Clarke from 1999.

"JILL SINGER: Every year, come time for the rookie draft, when the AFL starts selecting its future champions, far more boys have their dreams shattered than fulfilled.
They might be good, but they feel like failures.

DAVID PARKIN: It is the most difficult thing of all time.
You know, 1,100-odd players put their hands up to be registered for the draft, 80 of them are actually drafted and one in four of those will really make it.
That's a huge percentage dropout.

JILL SINGER: Does football eat its young?

DAVID PARKIN: Oh, it does, there's no doubt.
"

The shame is that there was no safety net for those that missed out then, and there isn't one now.

It's all about wanting it.

There were 2 guns in the year ahead of me at school. One was a really good footballer, the other was an absolute freak.
Had the talent to be a top 10 AFL player. Did one pre-season and walked away.

The other gun who wasn't nearly as talented didn't get picked up, so played a final year in the TAC cup. Went late in the next year's draft.
Has 2 flags, 3 major individual awards, and all things being equal, will probably get to 300 games.
