Name that has caught mty eye is Jackson Macrae.

Outside mid/Forward who kicks long and has a real turn of pace. Apparantly excels at getting kicks out of poor situations
Bolter: Macrae - might find himself close to the top 10 with a BOG in the TAC Cup grand final.
I'm with Pykie. I've got Macrae as my bolter also. Has come from a fair way back and I wouldn't be shocked to see him go top 5
I don't think Macrae is really all that much of a bolter. He was always around that first round mark, and with his size/style, a move to the top 10 isn't all that surprising. If anything, I think he is being slightly overrated now that more people have jumped on him.
#4 Melbourne (Compensation Pick) – Jackson Macrae (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 03/08/1994
Recruited from: Oakleigh Chargers
Style: Scott Pendlebury (Early career without that developed inside game)
Player comparison: Jared Polec
Range: 3-15
Profile: Macrae has really come on this year and developed into one of the more intriguing prospects this year. Macrae is a highly skilled and high production outside player who has really played some fantastic football throughout the u18 champs with his production and with his incredible ability by foot. Macrae’s kicking ability is a real standout feature – has great penetration and can kick accurately over a range of distances up to 55m and hit targets in dangerous positions. Finishing ability around goal good. Really weights his kicks beautifully and with regularity finds the correct target. Even under pressure in positions where he has no right to get a clear kick off to a target he still has great ability to find the right target up the field. Has rare poise and composure and seems to have more time than the next player in the same way Pendlebury does. Reads the play well both offensively and defensively allowing him to get to the right positions. Marking ability above average and field marking ability as well as marking ability behind the ball is good. The other feature in Macrae’s game that makes him stand out from the pack is his running ability. Has really impressive pace and with it a very high work rate and excellent endurance which allows him to get so much of the ball around the ground.
8. Brisbane - Jackson Macrae (188cm midfielder - Oakleigh)

Coming into the Championships, Macrae was typically a talented but inconsistent midfielder. He had been playing all over the ground, from the back lines to the wing and also up forward. But playing for Vic Metro he really found his position, and since then has been performing very well. He is an excellent size for an outside runner who pushes forward, and has the speed to go with it. In terms of agility with the ball in hand and also winning the ground ball, he'd be right at the top of the class - and he seems to have a handy knack for evading tackles too. AFL Comparison: Steele Sidebottom.
Some of our supporters would have a meltdown if we picked another inside and outside mid or utility around the 188 cm mark.

GET MACRAE.

:thumbsu:

Good name too.

GET CHEN - http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/chinese-athlete-gets-jumpstart-into-afl-20120921-26cgw.html

I've always thought we should have a look at some chinese martial artist types for international rookie listing*

184cm with an 86cm standing vertical leap (8cm > natanui) - leap developed as a result of an interest in basketball (notable b/c it seems that many basketball converts have good agility/lateral movement and vision)

Whilst he has absolutely no AFL background that sort of raw athleticism would surely be tempting for a recruiter?

*disclaimer - I'm asian

that is an insane leap

that is an insane leap

Yup - 86cm standing leap is 8cm better than the current AFL combine record (78cm, Natanui).

His running leap was recorded at 99cm - which would have put him 4th all time in the AFL combine (natanui/brenan @ 102cm, gourds @ 101cm)

According to AFL website - basketball/Volleyball background + did well in short track n field events (suggests pace?)

Lin Jong (dogs) is an asian athlete that seems to have tracked ok after having played footy for just 4 years - Chen seems to have similar physical attributes but potentially to a much higher level.

Surely worth a punt - particularly given that full time AFL development > school/under18 development.

only similarity to Jong would be their midfielder size and Asian heritage.

Not sure he would "surely be worth the punt" as he'd be very very raw not having a native game like Gaelic that involves the same kicking style.

Be handy in an on-field brawl though.

+ both athletes as opposed to footballers
+ both have basketball backgrounds
+ both have a great leap for their size + reasonably quick

The comparison with Jong was also b/c he didnt start playing football until 15 (ie quite late).

My point being that he has come a long way in 4 years in a semi-professional environment (school, TAC). In might be possible that Chen could develop just as much, if not more in a fully professional environment over 3-4 years

Would take a punt with our third round choice, not necessarily Chen, if it's an open pick (i.e. not being used to elevate).
There'll be McInnes like talent around our third pick. We just draft as per usual for mine. The cost of having a speculative pick on the list for 2 years is too big with the lack of nominated rookies now.

If it boils down to a Marcus Davies type marginal type then you take speculative pick. By all means if there is an obvious talent there then you make that selection. I'd rather take a chance on a maybe rather than using a pick on a guy who two years later is guaranteed to be among the delistee discussion.

I'd love Carlton to throw another Bootsma type curve ball and take someone like Jaksch.

Versatile pair key to decider
Chargers coach Justin Wenke says key-position prospect Jaksch's versatility was an attractive proposition for AFL clubs. He's selected at centre half-back but can play forward, as he did with Vic Metro. ''We're really pleased with Kristian's development, we've played him as a key defender and I suppose he's quite unique where he's a great contested mark and can play at both ends of the ground,'' Wenke said.
