Played junior footy in his league at an opposition club. I speak to a few people who are still connected to the league but who are almost always negative when it comes to promoting their boys as future AFL guns. They love this kid and suggest he is a great athlete but has an even greater work ethic.
Hopefully he is a good footballer as well as a good athlete... I think that a few of our more impatient supporters are getting sick of the club recruiting athletes instead of footballers :)

Think you are right with Hrovat but gee if he slipped to #39 (unlikely) you would take him wouldnt you? Kennedy much better than Blair and would happily take him anywhere. I have seen a lot of that kid and he is pure class and he is a terrific kid as well.

I agree on SImpson and knew where you were coming from. I would take him at #20 for sure.

I favour Shaw over Jaksch but dont forget I think Jaksch is a very good tall fwd. Seen him play very well there and he looks natural as well. I cant split them.

Anyway it will be nice pondering 3 players around that mix for a while but it will be hard as its still unclear to me where they all land. I have this is a current top 30 but am literally changing every time I look at it so dont read a lot into it, havent matched to clubs yet and have a view after 20-25 its a raffle;

Im still hoping everyone will be cautious on String and he will fall to our pick
Apparently pre broken leg he was a top 5 talent, post is still a little up in the air, Look at Barlow only jsut got back into form at the end of this season and didn't look even 100% of his opriginal self then.
But if Stringer falls to us even 90% of his original self may be worth pick #11

ROUND 4

70. CARL - Shane Nelson

Nice Work.

How is Shane Nelson travelling? where do you see him playing at AFL level?

Mate I'll be honest, my very limited knowledge of draftees comes from the D & T board.

Although I've read Nelson averaged 25 touches in the WAFL this year and based on form deserves a go. also read somewhere that maybe the eagles and cats invited him to the WA combine, and he performed well there.

Or Stringer could struggle like James Strauss who suffered a similar and shocking break against Carlton last year.

Huge call to take someone who might not get back to their best.
Dayle Gartlett

I put nine players names down here the other day and most would have been very happy to get any one of those.

At this stage:

We won't see: Daniher, Whitfield, Toumpas, Mayes and Grundy................................5 players

We may yet see one of these drop: Wines, O'Rourke, Plowman, Macrae...................4 players

If we don't, the next grouping may be: Stringer, Garlett, Vlatsuin, Clurey, Garner.....5 players

Or we may just go for a forward if we see it as a needs basis.

At this stage and from all reports we're going to get a good player, but let's just hope they don't come along with an injury curse.
Wouldn't be as happy if we picked up Clurey or Mason Shaw, really need to, IMO, use our first pick on someone who will be in our midfield rotations in the future.

Wines/O'Rourke would be a dream come true, very unlikely though. I'm still on the Stringer bandwagon though. Macrae, Garlett I could deal with but really hope we take Stringer over Vlastuin/Garner etc.

...That probably makes very little sense. [/wait for Thy's "I agree zee, that made no sense"]

im not so keen on mcrae as although he is a talent, he will not have an immediate impact as a Wine/O'rourke/stringer or even a garlett

i dont tink we really need someone who will make an immediate impact next year i'm more than happy to pick up a wingard esque player who has a high ceiling but falls over when he sneezes. put them in the twos for two years and unviel them in 2015. i think this draft is about picking midfielders for the future.

then again the problem with footballers is thhey tend to think there shat don't stank and when they aren't getting game time at 19 they may leave for greater opportunities.

Absolutely so.

Sooner have the kid we get to play a handful of games next year if he is indeed good enough to do so.
It was terrific for Bootsma to have earned his games this year when his body may have suggested otherwise.
As long as we get a long term gun, I don't care if he plays three games and doesn't get a touch in any of them like one Kade Simpson.

We need to take a long term view and just look for the best talent. Jaksch might take longer to develop, but he could be groomed as a replacement for Waite.

“Now Geelong’s one of those clubs who draft and just sit and wait, and Carlton is at that point. They haven’t been used to that before - it was more ‘There’s the best player, let’s go out and buy him’. The rules have changed and we’ve got to embrace the draft, both the supporters and the footy club

Immediate impact shouldn't come into it.

Yarran >>>>> Rich

Cool. When is that due to happen?
Sky is the limit when it comes to Yarran but Rich quietly went about putting a great year together. Think the suggestion that Yarran has been, is or will be a considerably better footballer is a bit premature.

Anyway...to the draft watchers out there am I correct in thinking that it is a bit more wide open this year after the first three picks? Seem to recall more consistency in phantom drafts etc in recent years.
