Something about the way he plays is very much similar to nick maxwell - just cant put my finger on it though.
have you noticed anything like that about garner C4

I am a little unsure how this whole draft is going to play out for us this time around.
We always seem to take a type of player that all of us feel we don't need.

Most of us here would say that we are in need of a mid, but are we really? With Bell and McLean coming on if we don't have as many injuries we should be fine. Especially if Gibbs moves more into the middle and Lucas finally stands up.

I would love to get either Wines or Stringer to the club. Both players have grunt about them and Stringer can be a very handy forward (even though he is coming back from a serious injury).

I doubt both will slide and I can see Stringer actually being picked up before Wines. The Dog's won't let Stringer pass both of their picks.

Kennedy, Vlastuin, Jaksch, Lonergan, Mayes, McCrae, O'Rourke, Garner, Garlett and maybe Wines and Stringer would be the mid types that will go first round and I believe out of the 11 mentioned, maybe 5+ will reach pick 11 which is a good result.

Then on the other hand, we could potentially go after a forward or Fwd/Mid (which I wouldn't be upset by) and take mids with our lesser picks.

Players like Membrey, Shaw and Menzel look likely to be closer to the late teens, early 20's picks, but I would be happy to take one of them with 11. Casboult and Mitchell really are unproven camodities in a sense and adding a player like one of these mentioned could potentially give us a big gap over other teams within a few years. Especially if we took Membrey as he looks a ready made player.

Hoping we don't go after a backman or a Heath Scotland replacement in Sam Colquhoun.

If Stringer or Wines is available, we should defintely take one of them, but other than these 2 players, I would be very happy with any of the players I have mentioned.

My preference would be:
Wines (just)
Stringer
O'Rourke
McCrae
Jaksch
Mayes
Vlastuin
Membrey
Garner
Kennedy
Menzel
Garlett
Shaw
Lonergan

If we took someone other that these 14 players, I would be shocked to say the least. But no matter what, at 11, we will get a really good player that hopefully plays 200+ in the Navy Blue :thumbsu:

Not sure that's quite right, HCJ

Last year was an odd one as the perception was that there wasn't a lot of quality after the first 18 or so and we came in at 22
2010 we got Watson. No one would have been surprised there.
2009 = Lucas. Not surprised but some wanted the tall.
2008. After Hurley went at 5, Yarran's name came pretty easily.

Still hope we err on the side of character, if you want to look at it that way.
I'd be very surprised should it not be a mid at #11 though.

Gotcha Harks, I do agree with your post. not sure why I wrote it that way. Was meant to say.
Last year we took an unknown with Boots, so who knows how this year will pan out.

My top 7 can all play as mids

I now also think Stringer wont get past one of the bulldogs picks at 5 or 6. If he does he has a good chance to slip to our pick but considering Brendan McCarthy love for contested ball winners id put my money Stringer, Wines and O'rourke would be at the top of his list

Good to see he is trying to get his act together
I like to see everyone given a second chance but this kid reeks of bad egg to me. In one of his earlier interviews he says something like 'it will be good to get away from the bad influences of the west' or something similar. Practically pointing the finger at someone else rather than inward. If he can't except blame for his own behaviour than he hasn't changed and will more than likely continue on with his shenanigans... BOOKMARK IT!! ...Do Not Want!

its taken a while but i've definately warmed to the idea of taking menzel, but garlett still sounds like he has attitude problems.

It's clear that:
Whitfield will be # 1
Toumpas & Grundy will be Top 5
Daniher is guarenteed at #10

In my opinion between Melbourne, WBD two picks and Port Adelaide
Wines and O'Rourke will be gone by #11

I believe we will be going for a midfielder, (will need quality mids in their youthful prime in around 3 years time to plan for life after Judd, Simmo, Carrots)

In order of preference i would have them at

#1 Stringer (Recovers from broken leg will be a star)
#2 Macrae (height and skill, best on ground in TAC final i believe would be great)
#3 Kennedy (small, but fast and skilled, if he was taller would be higher but he is very short)
#4 Lonergan (inside player we desperately need, big bodied, would make an impact)
#5 Garner (seems like he could be a decent pick)
#6 Vlastuin (inside and tackler, big bodied, imapact, would be happy with)
#7 Garlett (flash, skill, talent and can develop up forward till ready to play midifeld, offield and mentality an issue though)
#8 Colqhoun (more of a half back flanker than a midfielder, good skills, accumlator but can't see us picking up more outside flanking types)
#9 Mayes (more of a medium forward than a midfielder, i think we'll be going in the direction of a more pure mid)

Don't see us taking Menzel, LARS surgery and all
I'm hoping we dont take Jaksch or Clurey as i don't think we need talls
Plowman i would be happy with but i don't think he will reach us.

(Profiels taken from KM"s mock draft as he keeps them up to date and changed)

Our options look likely to be:

Jackson Macrae Height: 188cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 03/08/1994
Profile: Macrae has really come on this year and developed into one of the more intriguing prospects. Macrae is a highly skilled and high production outside player who has really played some fantastic football this year and has improved as much as an since the beginning of the season really showing consistent development throughout. Macrae’s kicking ability is a real standout feature – has great penetration and can kick accurately over a range of distances up to 55m and hit targets in dangerous positions. Finishing ability around goal excellent and has a real understanding of his positioning relative to the goals to allow him to execute finishes from positions few others can. Really weights his kicks beautifully and with regularity finds the correct target. Even under pressure in positions where he has no right to get a clear kick off to a target he still has great ability to find the right target up the field. Has rare poise and composure and seems to have more time than the next player in the same way Pendlebury does and just never looks rushed with ball in hand. He reads the play well both offensively and defensively allowing him to get to the right positions. Marking ability above average and field marking ability as well as marking ability behind the ball is good. The other feature in Macrae’s game that makes him stand out from the pack is his running ability. Has really impressive pace and with it a very high work rate and excellent endurance which allows him to get so much of the ball around the ground.

Jake Stringer Height: 191cm, Weight: 91kg, DOB: 25/04/1994
Profile: Stringer is probably the best talent in the draft and had it not been for a broken leg this season I would probably have him at no.1. Comes from a basketball background. Hard worker. Hasn’t really dominated games this year the way he has in the past and after his sickening broken leg of last year it’s just great to see him playing footy again. Stringer’s conditioning isn’t nearly where it was pre-injury and doesn’t seem to have his trademark explosiveness and leaping ability back yet and the endurance is nowhere near where it was but what’s encouraging is that he is still attacking the ball as hard as ever and working as hard as he can to impose himself on games. The feature I’ve always loved in Stringer’s game is his ability to play anywhere and just change the game with his attack on the ball and sheer will. With Stringer the versatility is a great asset and when he gets his fitness back he will be able to play through the midfield, forward or back to a high level. Wins the hard ball consistently and is a very good inside player to go along with his outside running ability which we have seen in the past. Ball use good by both hand and foot. Very strong mark overhead and can hit the scoreboard hard when shifted forward and with his limited fitness this year has mostly had to play up forward. I’ve most likely his play through the midfield at VFL level where he really demonstrated just how much of an AFL ready prospect he is. Stringer has star potential but needs to get his athleticism and conditioning back first before we see him back at his best which will take some time. Has great leadership potential and looks likely to be a guy who leads from the front at AFL level.

Ben Kennedy Height: 174cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB: 03/03/1994
Profile: Very small midfielder, but he can play. Speed is elite and in the very top percentile. Has that pace but also uses it effectively and willingly takes on opposition players to effect. More than has the performances on the board and showed a lot during the 2011 and 2012 U18 championships. Kennedy is a big accumulator and can hit the scoreboard for a number of goals. Ball use generally very good. Has a neat left foot kick with nice penetration. Very capable of winning his own ball. Marking ability good for a player of his height. Tackling very good but with his pace has the potential to be an elite tackler. Kennedy has a big chance of doing what Dion Prestia and Devon Smith have done in recent years in getting drafted early despite lack of height.

Taylor Garner Height: 186cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 08/01/1994
Profile: Garner is an interesting player who can play forward or through the midfield to a high level. Up forward looks dangerous and is a strong marking target. 1v1 marking ability good and has some ability in the air. Has a great leap on him and can take a hanger. Tackling ability good. When he steps up into the midfield can win his own ball and is a very strong contested ball winner which is great to see considering he isn’t yet super strongly built. I do have some concerns over the consistency of his ball use and have found he isn’t always clean at ground level which is a concern for a forward, additionally decision making on a number of occasions throughout the u18 championships let him down and didn’t always find the right target, but there is a fair bit to work with none the less and the improvement from seemingly nowhere is very encouraging and I suggest there is more to come.

Sam Mayes Height: 187cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 20/05/1994
Profile: Leadup forward who can also push into the midfield and have an impact. The standout feature of Mayes’ game is his kicking ability and it would have to be the best in the draft, just so good by foot and hits his targets and around goal just never misses. Has great pace and can really burst away from the trailing defender with ease. Marking ability very strong for a player of his size so there is a lot to work with. Has some ball winning ability through the midfield but still more improvement needs to come in this area for him to become an elite player. Long term with Mayes the view would be for him to develop into a midfielder and with his great footskills, speed then ability when pushing forward to present as a marking target he looms as an ideal player to have in your rotation. But will take some time to develop into a high level midfielder and might benefit from learning off other high level midfielders

Sam Colquhoun Height: 179cm, Weight: 72kg, DOB: 20/12/1994
Profile: Colquhoun is a back flanker who stands out with his elite kicking ability. Colquhoun time and time again by foot finds the right target off half back and regularly sets up meaningful drives out of the back half which often result in a goal at the other end. Picks the right targets every time and his decision making is just so good to go along with his pure kicking ability. Also Colquhoun has rare composure and seems to have more time than other players down back. Down back Colquhoun also stands out with his intercepting game and he regularly rebounds everything that comes his way through his strong 1v1 marking ability at his size but also his work rate. Most suited to playing loose an unaccountable rebounding role down back and can struggle at times 1v1 against stronger opposition.

Jesse Lonergan Height: 183cm, Weight: 86kg, DOB: 14/11/1994
Profile: Lonergan is a strong inside ball winning machine. Really powerful contested ball winner and clearance player. Has some pace. Tackling game very good. Above average inside distributor by hand. Lonergan has missed much of the first half of this year with injury but that doesn’t change the fact that he looms as a solid inside midfield option. Haven’t seen many signs with Lonergan of an outside game. Kicking has improved this year after being mostly inconsistent in previous years. Lonergan looks like a really solid prospect and one of the more ready to go prospects with his AFL ready body.

Nick Vlastuin Height: 187cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 19/04/1994
Profile: Midfielder who consistently wins the contested footy and just consistently goes harder than the next player. Big time clearance player. Skill level is exceptional, uses it well by both hand and foot and rarely makes mistakes. Particularly stands out by foot and has nice penetration. Has also been noted for leadership and really leads by example out on the field so there is a lot to like. Marking ability forward of centre very good for a midfielder. Consistently plays to a high level. Athletically not as good as other likely high end midfield choices but is still a hard runner who will work all day and demonstrates great endurance and work rate. Tackles hard and willingly works both ways. Looks like a very low risk, solid pro who is worthy of a high draft position. Probably didn’t produce the numbers at the u18 champs that many expected but still a very desirable prospect and a guy you can play through the midfield tomorrow which will appeal to a number of clubs.

Dayle Garlett Height: 180cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 09/01/1994
Profile: Quality outside midfielder who can sneak forward and have an impact. Showed a fair bit of talent through the 2011 U18 champs and again in 2012 has played some excellent football and really put forward a strong case suggesting that he should be selected early. Garlett has game-breaking pace and uses it to advantage with regularity and is willing to take running bounces and take the ball as far as the opposition let him. Decision making excellent and even when pressured or in congestion still makes the right decision most of the time. Finishing around goal good. Left footer with some nice penetration and hurt factor on his kick. Can use his right boot and use it well. Can really hit the scoreboard and be very damaging with the influence he can have on some games. Also when the ball hits the ground I like how he immediately has that quickness of mind and body to get to the ball quicker than everyone and quickly get the ball onto hit boot for a goal. I like it that despite his lack of size that he is still capable of winning his own ball and playing on the ball and not just outside. Dayle still needs to build more strength through the hips so that he can stand up in tackles, but there is a fair bit to like about his game. Also defensively can continue to get better to compliment his incredible offensive game. I’m hearing some real discipline issues which may see Garlett slide down the draft more than his talent deserves. It will be really interesting to see how clubs evaluate Garlett as he is an unbelievable talent, but the risk is there. Likely the end of season interviewing will decide his eventual draft position but certainly on the field has done everything right and produced some big games

man i hope we can land Jake Stringer

can release walker into the wing. stringer perfect as our 3rd tall

#1 Stringer (Recovers from broken leg will be a star)
Should be gone by pick 11.
#2 Macrae (height and skill, best on ground in TAC final i believe would be great)
As above
#3 Kennedy (small, but fast and skilled, if he was taller would be higher but he is very short)
Height is the only problem, otherwise he is a beast.
#4 Lonergan (inside player we desperately need, big bodied, would make an impact)
Tassie boy, they always seem to fall further than most people think.
#5 Garner (seems like he could be a decent pick)
AFL position will be interesting.
#6 Vlastuin (inside and tackler, big bodied, imapact, would be happy with)
Highly interested in knowing where he falls.
#7 Garlett (flash, skill, talent and can develop up forward till ready to play midifeld, offield and mentality an issue though)
Off field issues aside, super talent. Would not be shocked to see him drift to our pick.
#8 Colqhoun (more of a half back flanker than a midfielder, good skills, accumlator but can't see us picking up more outside flanking types)
Don't think he is a consideration at pick 11.
#9 Mayes (more of a medium forward than a midfielder, i think we'll be going in the direction of a more pure mid)
If this guy is still around at pick 11, I would be very shocked.

The first pick a nice inside midfielder would be great, but some speed on the wing would be nice.

You have Mayes, Stringer and Macrae gone by 11
Add Whitfield, Toumpas and Grundy, that's already 6
Wines and O'Rourke, that's 8
Then there are two more spots to fill out of the likes of
Plowman, Jaksch thats 10 already.
With Daniher at 10

Therefore this means that AT LEAST one of

Whitfield, Grundy, Toumpas, Wines, O'Rourke, Plowman, Jaksch, Stringer, Mayes and Macrae will be available at our pick.

Add onto that the fact that Menzel and Garlett are both probably top 10 talents but that they both have issues, (injury and behaviour)
All it takes is for someone to take one of those two early
Or Jaksch, Plowman, Shaw and Clurey (the top 4 KPP's) to be picked up (Western Bulldogs could be lookng at a forward, as could brisbane and WBD, GWS could use a young defender like Plowman, brisbane could take Plowman)

If a few of those go then one of the second band of midfielders (behind Toumpas and Whitfield)
Wines, O'Rourke, Stringer, Macrae, Mayes will fall to us.

10. JD
11. ???

Something along those lines would not be out of the question.
