What's everyone's view on Sam Mayes?
Hearing some good things & his video on afl website looks good. He's not a mid though - a bit Waite like.

Would still prefer a pure mid - we need to keep developing the forwards we have already (Mitchell, Casboult, Rowe etc.), one must come good.

I think we need to make it a priority to start preparing for the end of the Judd era, with Simmo & Carrots (and of course Scotto) getting on. Really hope we make mids a focus this draft period - need some young speedy types to compliment Bell, Robbo etc. I think we've drafted enough talls in the last few drafts, especially 2010.

Menzel is ready to go now, freak like his brother and if he is available....!

No one under 186cm thanks or 6ft in the old...

Big body strong overhead and beautiful off both feet.

Done...

He might be 180 with long stops in, seriously doubt it though.

Anyway regardless I Agree with who ever said that we shouldn't be disregarding players due to height. Who cares if a mid is 187 but can't find it.

Marc Murphy, currently the best player on our list, is only 5'11".

Best available, thanks.

So we need another 5'10" midfielder???

Big body mids with tanks are what we lack, what everyone lacks!

With rotation rules changing in 18 months, not only do you pick 'best available' to play in their position but they need to be able to play a role as a forward...

That's why I think Menzel is perfect.

He has been compared to Stevie J and his brother, have you seen either of them run the midfield?? Quality...!

Just saying... ;)

If Menzel is fit and it doesnt look like reoccurring then he just might be the best player at our pick.
I'll trust the team and our doctors if we pick him up. But i'm no doctor and i am fairly nervous about him.
Im not agasint picking Kennedy up, happy to have small midfielders, I think Knightmare said he would be the best tallent in the draft if he was 186cm

Lachie Whitfield is only 184cm - clearly too short.

We need players with talent - full stop. Someone mentioned around our pick is Ben Kennedy. If the club rated him as a 200 gamer, I'd back them to select him over someone else just because they were taller.

Ahhhhh...

Every year there is a gun small that goes top 5, someone who is described as elite, which Whitfield will be. There is NO substitute for pure talent but every year the 'talent' last until pick 10 and then the pace/height/endurance/smarts kick in and the guessing game begins...

Lucas, test in point... Pace/smarts/endurance but disposal/decision making kept him out of the top 10...

Best available at our pick is a guess...!

So the arbitrary difference between 10 and 11 (or 12 in Lucas' case) is the difference between someone with "talent" and someone without it. This is one of the most illogical posts I have ever read, even for bf it is bad

goreds will be devastated if we draft another Kade Simpson with pick 11. Far too short and resilient for the modern game.

So no one under 186cm or 183cm in the new version of the old... or is that 180cm in the really old version of 6' tall?

if we were to pick menzel (which i am warming too) i think we should play him in walkers position in the forward line and make tex a permenant midfielder, i think that would be the best way to "milk" his talents (menzels) in the short term.

I have looked through some of the Phantom Draft threads and am slightly concerned that a few have Menzel heading our way. I would have thought that we have enough players with injury clouds hanging...
He most likely will become a great player, but picking up a player with a family history with knee conmcerns???Jackson Macrae, Nick Vlastuin, Oliver Wines, Jesse Lonergan and Jonothan O’Rourke are the names I believe we will hope fall to our pick. Wouldn't be surprised if Nick Vlastuin is the guy we take is he falls to our pick.

This is from Knightmare's Phantom:

#14 GWS (Via Melbourne - Compensation Pick) - Nick Vlastuin (VIC – Mid/Def)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 19/04/1994
Recruited from: Northern Knights
Style: Nathan Buckley (less athletic)
Player comparison:
Range: 5-25
Profile: Midfielder who consistently wins the contested footy and just consistently goes harder than the next player. Big time clearance player. Skill level is exceptional, uses it well by both hand and foot and rarely makes mistakes. Particularly stands out by foot and has nice penetration. Has also been noted for leadership and really leads by example out on the field so there is a lot to like. Marking ability forward of centre very good for a midfielder. Consistently plays to a high level. Athletically not as good as other likely high end midfield choices but is still a hard runner who will work all day and demonstrates great endurance and work rate. Tackles hard and willingly works both ways. Looks like a very low risk, solid pro who is worthy of a high draft position. Probably didn’t produce the numbers at the u18 champs that many expected but still a very desirable prospect and a guy you can play through the midfield tomorrow which will appeal to a number of clubs.

Stringer no. 11 for me. Reports were likely no. 1. Big strong can "pinch hit" KPP yet regarded as midfield prospect.
My wife (jockey) had bad compound lower leg fracture.....2 years is about the right timing for return to peak.
Providing repair was quality, will be fine.

The other "crock" Menzel also excites me. Before his problems, big bro was the next big thing. Lars is a worry, but give him a flogging pre season. make or break. If he is as good as his brother and has to go through a traditional reco, may be worth "missing" a year. Our greatest needs are post Judd, Carrazzo & Simpson.

The size debate is a pertinent one. Class is class, but we have suffered through having too many small or light bodies in our rotations. We still have Murph, Simmo, Ellard, Jeffy, Eddie, Lucas, Buckley, Bootsma, Dale small or developing, good argument for more size/bulk at the moment.
