I would go Wines over Caddy any day :)

Well the GWS took advice from Scully Snr when he was still getting paid by Sydney as a scout, so having SOS throw us a player a year or two before he comes back home sounds like a fair outcome by GWS standards :D

For the life of me I can't see the Dogs taking another inside midfielder, considering they have Smith, Liberatore, Wallis and Stevens.

Isn't their F/S selection Hunter a similar style as well?

They need pace and outside run.

Don't forget about Wallis. That's going to be a hard midfield to beat in clearances

Forgot that they also just traded in Stevens. They would surely be all set for inside mids with that group...................

Not forgetting, of course, that they have Boyd to lead them for a few more seasons yet.

McCartney loves his tough inside ball winners but I would think (and hope) that he has enough of that type already at his disposal.
 
Brett Anderson is on SEN this arvo on the Run Home - considering he is a source of Wines to Carlton and Jaksch to Tigers - could be worth a listen.

Wines would be a dream get for us and the rumours always spread last minute that Carlton will get a great outcome (Pavlich, Kerr, Reimers) but I'll be happy with any slider in Vlastuin, Mayes, Menzel, Macrae etc etc.

Esp when you consider they have spent a first and 2nd rd pick on Wallis and Libba respectively in 2010, and another 1st rd pick on Smith last year and #44 for Stevens this year. That is a fair investment on inside mids in the last 3 trade/draft periods

RE: The likely story of tomorrow night's draft and where Ollie Wines might end up................ Heres what I think might happen.
  • GWS will go Whitfield, O'Rourke and Mr. Plow will their first 3 picks from all sources and appear to be set.
  • Demons would be crazy not to add Toumpas to their list as he's the 2nd best player in this draft (not including Daniher) - this will see Wines slip.
  • Dogs are the wildcard here - my gut says they'll go for Wines and Menzel (one safe, one risk) but what they NEED and SHOULD do based on their current midfield stocks is go for more outside polish i.e. Jackson Macrae. I've heard a lot of people say Macrae and Menzel at 5/6 - which would see Wines continue to slip.
  • Port will also be a deciding factor... Do they go Grundy? Or Mayes? Or best available in Wines... My gut says the Ben Jacobs thing will cause them to go for Mayes with their addition of Wingard last year might see them go for local talent again. Whilst Grundy is the better player overall, their list doens't need another ruckman. They should go Mayes in my mind.
  • Which brings us to the Lions. They set out for 3 things in the offseason - an inside mid (got through Moloney), a forward/ruck (Martin) and a KPP forward/back. They have been heavily backed to get Jaksch at pick 8 and will hopefully stick to their guns as he could be a future replacement for Brown. I can't see Wines being in their plans although stranger things have happened...
  • Richmond Richmond Richmond... Have been heavily linked to Vlastuin for some time and now sources say Jaksch will be taken if he's here. Personally I'm on the G-Train - if the Tigers pass on Grundy with their low ruck stocks they have rocks in their heads... If not Grundy though... do they stick to Vlastuin or pounce on Wines? If I was counting on a team to screw up this call, I'd definitely back in the Tigers... I vote they go Vlastuin still.
  • Dons - Daniher is their future franchise player - gun. Lucky buggers.
  • Carlton - so if the above works out we should have a choice of Grundy (doesn't fit the list/plans), Wines (would be best available and perfect fit for Carlton in the #2 Guernsey) or Jake Stringer (would only take if Wines and Vlastuin were gone)

This leaves a likely scenario like this:

1. Whitfield
2. O'Rourke
3. Plowman
4. Toumpas
5. Macrae
6. Menzel
7. Mayes
8. Jaksch
9. Vlastuin
10. Daniher (F/S)
11. Wines
12. Grundy
13. Simpson
14. Corr

Most likely spanner to throw this out is if Dogs go Wines, leaving Macrae to push to order down (or possibly slip to the Blues instead). Also, if Port suck it up and pick Grundy then Mayes could slip.

Either way it seems Blues will have either Wines, Macrae, Stringer, Vlastuin, Mayes or Grundy at Pick 11 - all potential top 10 picks. Can't really go wrong can we? God forbid if we pick up someone like Wood or Membrey here just for the sake of going tall (when we don't need it).

I'm not a religious man but tonight I may pray.

I don't know how good Wines is, but it seems unlikely that he'll get to Carlton. Sounds too good to be true that we'll get another Wines.
