Russell was a guy who needed to be training and playing a lot of footy and needed to be super fit to be any good. Some guys are good players when they are playing below their best, he was far from it. Turned it over by hand a lot and by foot and wasn't overly hard at the contest, especially for a big strong guy. Wouldn't call him a bad player but we just went hard for medium sized half backs and he fell a long way back in the pecking order. Would be pretty decent in any of the bottom 6 sides and could fill a role in a few of the others. Disappointing to have a first round pick not really succeed but that draft wasn't overly strong.

Anyone want a Hayden Ballantyne in Ben Kennedy after last night?
I'd love him at the Blues. Can burn opponents off with his leg speed and kick goals from outside 50. With Wines and O'Rourke probably no chance I'd like Garlett, Vlastuin, Kennedy or Mayes. Probably in that order. Colquhoun, Graham, Barry or Pongracic in round 2.

The side needs a player with ability, skill and intensity like Ballantyne.

Never trust a footballer who has a cat...

It's ridiculous that Melbourne could get picks 3&4 without having to choose Viney as one of those picks #OneLessMidToSlideToUs

Is Viney better than one of Whitfield/Toumpas?
Not in my opinion but Melbourne have invested so much into Viney and would not hesitate in taking him first round if they had to. He's a top ten talent, not quite top five but don't rule out Toby Greene type accumulating from day one.

I reckon GC could nominate him as he would fit in well with the list type they are building. GWS I think would be crazy to even think about passing on Whitfield. Still think Melbourne will get him for 26 :(

GC could nominate him without even the slightest fear they'd have to pick him. Isn't Whitfield the perfect pick for GWS, they stock up on inside mids Scully, Shiel, Coniglio, Greene, Tyson, Adams and the best player in the entire draft this year happens to be an outside mid.

Whitfield really will suit them. So much so I doubt GWS would even risk it. Which means that the Viney decision is GC's.

Maybe Melbourne and them will have a bit of a talk about how they can get who they want out of this situation

Would you be happy to get Stringer with his injury history?

Mayes and Garlett wouldn't go down well with those who think we favour flankers and outside players.

I know this is greedy, but I would love it if we could swing a trade so we could get Caddy and Kennedy/Stringer. We need more mongrel and big bodies if we want to take on Hawthorn. Wonder if Mick will trade Lucas or try to turn him around like Ratts did with Russell.

Agree here, tell ya what though... With cook, gysberts, jurra, Maloney & possibly Davies walking out things don't seem all that good down at the Dee's! If I were viney I'd be praying GC or GWS bid!

As opposed to when they were awesome WITH those players?

I think he knows how shit Melbourne are :p

From where I sit it's a no to Stringer with our first round pick. I'm not a recruiter or doctor though and they'll have a fair idea of how much if at all his injury will hinder him.

On Mayes and Garlett, well our recruiters don't pick players to keep BigFooty fans happy so they can STFU but I bet there were times this year when everyone wished we had a Lewis Jetta type gamebreaker out there. Both have great kicking skills which I think is important to get on to our list, they're both capable of winning their own ball too.

I agree with you about the big bodied mids, it's funny how we all remember it each year when the finals start up again.

Just Neeld weeding out the soft ***** and undisciplined players. :thumbsu:

Lol Mayes and Garlett, what are you guys on about, those 2 are not as hard at it as Wines or Stringer. Did you not watch our matches this year? When we lost badly it was through lack of effort and intensity, these type of players are just what we need, players who will provide the inspirational acts by winning the ball in the tough situations.

No point being able to kick if you can't win the ball when the opposition come at you and play a physical type of game. Wines and Stringer both have very good disposal skills anyway imo.

That'll probably be considered as draft tinkering, which is not allowed I don't think.

Officially no. But this just like every other business, people will bend and break the rules they think they can

I would be for Stringer based on the BigFooty group think that he's a versatile and strong player.

Why wouldn't Stringer be a good fit for Carlton?

Mayes and Garlett sound OK if they can kick.

Wouldn't mind that Colqhuan(?) kid or Matthew Haynes with our second pick. Small defender rebounder in Haynes and half back distributor in Colqhuan (am sure the spelling is wrong here)
