Opinion 2012 draft thread.

Rookie a ruckman. Not an established one, but a kid we think might be worth the punt. It's good coverage in case the ruck depth is tested - like it has been the last two years.

Any prospects?
 
Is collins the key back from oakleigh a chance of being picked up? Saw he was a regular in the best. Dominated acc for Whitefriars, don't think he had a goal kicked on him all year.

Young Roosters' draft stocks on the rise
Mayes' teammate, 22-year-old Mitch Clisby is one such player.

The speedy, 182cm, half-back flanker from Broken Hill, has enjoyed a career-best season with the Roosters and has averaged 26 disposals, 10 marks and eight rebound 50s during the finals.

" Clisby's had a pretty good year for North Adelaide and as a mature-aged player, a great SANFL season and finals series all of a sudden might elevate him a bit more compared to where he was six months ago," Reid said.

"He was good again on the weekend and he's had a really good year and he came through the NSW state system with Taylor Walker.

"He's slowly developed at North under Josh Francou, so someone like that [would benefit greatly from a good finals campaign].

"I'm not saying he's definitely going to be drafted, but he'd probably put himself in contention to look at an opportunity, even if it's a rookie."

I'm keen for a small defender, but one who is accountable first.

Duigan's more of medium zoning defender, Joseph has a chequered record at best, Davies plays like an undersized CHB, McInnes, Bootsma, Laidler are third tall/wing style. Armfield seems to play better forward, Yarran, Scotland play better as sweepers.

We haven't got a Taylor Hunt, Nick Smith, Brent Guerra type who are hard and accountable.

Yeah Adam seems a likely type.

From a needs perspective I'd be going after inside mid and small defender, preferably nuggety types. I'd be ok with two ND picks given how many rookies we'll be picking up, plenty of time for speculative flashy types (and marque foreign athletes) there

Walker plays the role really well though there are those on this forum that believe he will walk out on us if we play him in defence. Very hard to beat and a good one on one competitor. Yarran's defensive game is underrated. We tended to attempt to play him on the weaker forwards and have him run off but the few times he took a good player he did pretty well. Can see Yarran and Scotland playing more defensively this year when the situation calls for them to. Could actually work in a posative way for us by having a guy like Yarran on a top player who will take him to the footy far more often than a poorer player will.

The way I see it, we should be playing good footballers in defence, never again bringing in poor small ordinary footballers and they all should be able to defend. No more asking a player to be completly attacking.
 
You want damaging players attacking. You want defensive players defending. Some elite players can do both, we have maybe 1-2 capable of getting a good mix (Henderson, Laidler) but otherwise you're off.

Yarran defends well for a forward turned HBF, but it's the sort of harassing chasing he'd be doing in the forward 50, not the close man-checking you want. He defends once the ball is there, not before. Scotland is much the same, although his intercept game is excellent

Walker is a midfielder. He has the tank, he has the run, he has the skills, and from what I've seen recently he's got the fire back in his belly. I reckon he's going to tear it up next year

This is what has got Carlton to where it is. Your backline must be filled with good all round footballers who can compete really well one on one, have really good smarts and can attack and also defend. This is one of these examples of "the Carlton way of doing things" that I hope MM gets rid of completly. No weak links, no AJ specialist over defensive types, just good all round footballers.

The Carlton way of doing thing list that needs changing is:
"We need a good power forward (Kernahan, Whitnall, Fevola) that will kick a heap of goals. Can't play too many talls because opposition rebound too easily. Talls must be really good or should not get a game". Wrong.

needs to be changed to

"We need good structure with a couple of good tall forwards and a forward pocket who can ruck and can take a mark and kick a goal, none need to kick a heap of goals but need to be capable of kicking consistant goals and taking pressure off team mates. None of the talls need to be absolute guns but the better they are the better it is for us, as long as there is structure".

"We need a small ultra defensive back pocket because it is a waste playing one of our guns on the better small forwards, perhaps a specialist tagger type. Playing gun small defenders on gun small forwards takes the defender our of the game." Wrong.

needs changing to

"We need a solid and consistant back 6 filled with good footballers who can both attack and defend strongly and are all willing to sacrifice their game for the team when need be, we need to play our best small backmen (Yarran/Walker/Scotland) on the best small forwards because our best are the best for a reason and because of that will do the best when the ball comes in the direction of them and their opponant. No typecasting. Playing our gun small forwards on the better players will take them to the ball and will work out in a posative way for us because of this. Playing them on lesser players can bring about a forward tag".

"We need 1 - 3 gun midfielders and we must play our best midfielders in the center all the time and pace is all important unless they are a pure inside midfielder". Wrong.

Needs to change to

"The hard at it strong workhorse types are better off in the center and the midfield quality must run strongly from top to bottom. Pace is not overly important but strength is."

It's also about relying less on individuals and making players more flexable within their position.

Our weakness is the midfield. That's where the structure and depth is a problem. Can either be fixed by adding better midfielders to the side or perhaps sending Walker or Yarran/Scotland to the midfield by a change in forward/backline structure. So we either go in that direction and pick up gun small/medum defenders with the idea of moving an existing players to the midfield over the next few years or we go after midfielders. A good balance of both perhaps would be good.

So there are two ways we can draft. Go for what we need and what we will need when the retirements come in by drafting that type (Midfielders). Or draft so we can move players like Yarran, Walker and Gibbs from the forwardline/backline into the midfield. Drafting a ruckman is also something to consider as I can't see us retaining Kreuzer/Warnock/Hampson for their careers. I feel warnock will finish his career prematurely through injuries or a trade with us.

All players of any quality can both attack and defend, but very few player can do both excellently. Matthew Scarlett, Dustin Fletcher, Graham Johncock, Corey Enright, Heath Shaw are good examples.

But most players are primarily defenders, Darren Glass, Daniel Merett, Taylor Hunt, Brent Guerra are all examples.

Others are attackers, Grant Birchill, Andrew Mackie, Shaun Burgoyne, Rhyce Shaw demonstrate this.

It's about knowing a players strengths not playing them purely negative or purely attacking. From my view we only have 3 players I rate as consistent defenders (Laidler, Jamison, Henderson) on our list. We have a few prospects hanging around but none I really think of as able to go with a Rioli, Betts, Ballantyne.

They are to an extent, A lot of players tend to vear a little towards one type than the other, but out of all those players you have mentioned, all who are successful, they can all defend and take a good player on occasion.

Those you mentioned as defencive players can still get the footy but just not in big numbers and they are generally good users of the ball and make very few mistakes with the ball and when competing. They are the sort of players who do a lot with very little and do what they do very well. End of the day it's better to have players that can do both and it's a complete myth that good attacking players can't defend, unless you are Leon Davis.

I don't mind seeing our gun players play on lesser opponents. I hate seeing us bring in ordinary, ultra defencive footballers who aren't that good to play on a gun small forward when we come up against a team with a gun in it. I'd rather see one of our good small/medium players play on those forwards. So next time Rioli, Jetta, Ballentine or Milne are our opponents, I'd like to see Walker or Yarran go to them instead of Joseph. I just recon that we don't need particular individuals do star to win football games if we are going to be truly successful.

Will be interesting to see how we go about matching up on the opposition forwards next year. We often put our weaker players on the better forwards and our better players on the weaker forwards. Likely to be the other way around next year. Would be happy to see a more even spread of possession winners down back and less goals scored. Rather than small players getting "under our radar", a couple of really high possession winners and a couple of really low possession winners from our defenders.
 
I wasn't talking about that type of footballer, we already have several of those. As I said we need a tidy defender who takes a small forward, locks them down and doesn't make mistakes deep in defence

Yep that's alright, I agree with that. Just our opinion differs as to where that person will come from. I believe that that player/s should come from our existing stock and that someone like Walker or Yarran who have the strenght, smarts and pace to beat anyone one on one and have done some impressive defensive work in the past, should assume a change of role back there and take on the better forwards and beat them one on one and run off them and beat them by making them work both ways. Also no question how good they are with the ball in their hands. Where as you believe we need to obtain someone for this role. That's fine, we still get what we want either way.

I'm warming to getting a tall or medium forward with our first pick. Judd, Carrazzo, Gibbs, Murphy, Simpson, Bell, Curnow, Mclean, Robinson, Lucas and a tough young mid with pick 33 would be an OK midfield. If O'Keeffe survives, then I'd throw him into the mix as a mid-forward.

Still a lot of love for Kennedy don't get me wrong, I have quite a few favorites I just love what Membrey has done of late!

If our midfield can stay fit, then I think we'll be ok ;)
 
Would love EP/ Crane6 to tell us (If they know of course) who we will be targeting. Be good to have a definitive answer as opposed to all the "we should go after ....." posts.
