Do Taylor Garner, Josh Simpson and Nathan Hrovat come into serious consideration?
I think Simpson will, I think we'll be looking at Mayes, Menzel, Kennedy, Simpson, Macrae and Jaksch. If I had to guess they're the ones I think will be in the mix.

Potential sliders to 11. Looking for something that will add to our list

1. Mcrae offers something we don't have. composed midfielder with a sidestep, can create space and provide link, run and carry.
2. Mayes Again the type we don't have. Nice kick some X factor, goal kicking half forward who provides versatility

If both these boys are gone (which is likely) my next preferences would be

3. Simpson Could be anything. Will provide instant line breaking ability, run and carry. Imagine Yarran and Simpson on the wings
4. Kennedy Clever little midfielder with a great burst of speed and beautiful long kick.
Like these four.

Menzel might slide to GWS. I'd back them if we take him, yet I wouldn't take that risk if Mayes or Macrae are there.

I see Mayes or Macrae adding to our 22 by giving us another player with Gibbs' poise, skill, marking, side step and awareness. You can picture Yarran, Gibbs, Murphy, Macrae/Mayes/Simpson/Kennedy and Lucas getting around opponents for some time. Vlastuin would add intensity like Robinson and Kreuzer if he slides past Richmond. Think I'd still go for the class act with Robbo, Curnow, Bell, McLean and O'Keeffe all a chance to add muscle to our 22. I would look for a hard mid with a later pick. Though Vlastuin's leadership might add weight to his rankings.

I can see Walker spending more time in the midfield if we get Mayes.

Of course not. What's the issue with attempting to further cover our bases in case a number of the abovementioned players are unable to make the grade?

Because at this stage I believe midfield depth is far more important than tall depth. We have potential cover for talls on our list. Not much for mids IMO

That would be the net message, would it not?

You can only field 4 to five key position players at any one time, whereas we clearly need to keep building our mid-field squad.

Repeating myself here but only opportunity gets the best out of our players (actually, most players as a matter of fact) and conversely lack of opportunity sends players backwards.
If it wasn't for our bout of serious injuries this year, we may have never got to know of Bell, Casboult, McInnes and Dale who may have just been de-listed by now.

If Jaksch is rated well above the next player we have access to, then we'll pick him but if it falls to a 50/50, I think we'll go the mid.

No, it wouldn't. The net message woul be that we are intent on building a comfortable amount of depth in every position on the park, and there's nothing wrong with that. That's what every club in the competition strives for, and I'm not sure why there is such resistance to that from some on here. There are so many variables that can affect an individual or a group of players at any stage - be it injury, suspension, fluctuating form or personal issues - and we have to be prepared for that. We weren't prepared for it this year and it cost us dearly. A commitment to prepare ourselves for it should it hit us again should be applauded and embraced rather than frowned upon and considered to be a sign of not having faith in the current crop of players and their ability to perform.

Waite and Jamison are arguably our two most important talls, but neither have shown themselves to be capable of putting in a full season at AFL level. I don't expect that to change with Waite.

Both Henderson and Kreuzer have spent a significant portion of the past 18 months on the sidelines, so there naturally has to be some concern there. There's no doubt over their quality, however.

Hampson has been struck down by injury in each of the past few seasons, and Laidler as well as White, although they aren't true KPPs, are coming back from injury and we just don't know how that will go - hope as we may that everything will be clear.

Casboult was injured for the majority of season 2012 and was only thrust into senior action at the back end of the year because we quite literally had no other viable alternatives.

And then there's of course Mitchell and Rowe, who I've already covered and won't do so again.

Jaksch could be recruited as a long-term replacement for Thornton who is of course no longer with us.

Were you of the opinion that we had too many talls available to us in 2012?

Recruiting Jaksch at the expense of Thornton won't alter the numbers.

I agree, and I've said so previously. My preference is for us to take a midfielder with pick 11. However we shouldn't shy away from a key position player like Jaksch and use the justification that we have Mitchell, Rowe, Casboult and McCarthy because none of them have really done anything to this point in their careers.

Edit: What on earth happened to the formatting of this post?

Imagine a draft like this RK

11. Nick Vlastuin
36. Jason Pongracic
56. Kyle Martin
Rookie: Jaryd Cachia

:D
Are you a wizard?

Pongracic at 36 is the slider I was hoping for.

Believe Ben Jacobs has priced himself out of our reach. Would have taken Jacobs after getting a small like Kennedy with pick 11. Or Josh Simpson.

This is definitely worth a look and a laugh. Don't turn it off after only the 1st minute.

Hi Doc. Not sure they'll pick Grundy, though you never know. I'm thinking today that Macrae could get through, he seems to be their top choice. Jaksch I have going to Brisbane, though he's also a chance to be there. I think Richmond will take Vlastuin, but they could look at Nathan Hrovat or Jesse Lonergan.

A mate of mine from SA that I trust with talent spotting does not have Pongracic that high on his thoughts, not sure pick 36 is a case of sliding.
Pomegranate's bandwagon will grow if a draft tragic states that he is the next Rockliff.

:D

Just to clarify, Pongracic at 36 was just a joke about filling our entire draft with brute midfielders. Sits at 42 on my list, strong but might struggle with speed and getting enough of the ball.

I think I'm in a sailing race rather than a draft thread, ive gone and changed tack again. Well almost.

Would love Stringer with #11, but if not, I want Sam Mayes. One thing I think we missed last season was a player like Ryan Houlihan in the forward half. Not a player that bombs away, but a bloke who takes on the tackler, lowers his eyes and hits up the forward target consistently, or can slot the goal on the run. Fev said he loved it when Houla got the pill as he knew he could lead whenever and get hit up everytime.

Mayes would be a fantastic pick at 11 :thumbsu:

Adam Carter, is he Mitch Carter's brother. If so what are the differences? Mitch didnt exactly light it up at CFC but was fairly well touted out of South freo.
Biggest difference would be ability, similar players but Adam is a lot better.

O.K. I've finally set my wishes in concrete.

Would be happy with Stringer......or Mayes......or O'Rourke.......or Menzel......or Macrae......or Simpson.......or Vlatsuin.
This. :thumbsu:

I don't want Stringer or Menzel who will need to bring their own walking frame if they break down again.

Yet their talents might overrule any injury concerns at pick 11.
