2012 Draft wish list

Lyon has turned walters around.

True, but I don't think the comparison is quite that simple.

While it may be the case that Walters is a lazy footballer, in terms of training, endurance etc. I don't think he was ever a selfish one. Well, at least not to the same extent as Garlett.

Just has way too much FIGJAM about him and I suspect he won't interview that well as a result.
Happy to be wrong here as I would love to see the kid prove me wrong and put it together in the AFL, my gut instinct however says otherwise.

We need to draft the following type of players in the 2012 draft:

Key Back with the strength & speed of McPharlin with a touch of Johnson class and skill

Key forward with the strength & marking ability of Cloke with the class and skill of Pavlich

Midfielder with the speed & strength of Dangerfield with the class of Mundy.

If we can get those type of players, we will be unstoppable!

Too easy, all of those players are a dime a dozen. Can put that off until the rookie draft.

Really need some half bank flankers though, hard task I know!

Really like the look of Garlett, he was great in the championships and kicked probably the goal of the tournament.

I see him going to West Coast though as I think he will be available still at their first pick, probably because we will go for a KPP.

What does everyone think of Paparone? Saw glimpses of him in the championships and looks very good, quite a good sized forward who is good below the knee's and seems to get quite a bit of the ball

Set shot is poor, works well in open space, snatches at overhead marks.

Rarely brings in contested grabs, as you say agile enough, great tank, ok below his knees.

More of a third tall, link up option. I'd really love to see how he'd go behind the ball, shame we havent seen that this year.

Reckon Paparone will be around come our second pick. Would represent a good value there, wouldn't be spending pick 16 on him, way too much of a punt. His contested marking is very average and while his superior fitness allows him to dominate juniors it won't set him apart at senior level. An organised defence will easily account for him.

I think we always tend to overrate the big guys as they are so hard to come by and more often than not fill a gaping need. But let's be reasonable, I can't see him carrying a forward line in the AFL, more of a foil than a dominant forward. If we want a player to build our future forward plans on Hogan is the man, with Stringer and Shaw consolation prizes.

I would be a little nervous about trading Zac Clarke but i think the only way i would trade him would be if we traded our first pick and Clarke for a mini draft pick (Hogan) and Tom Lee. This way we have a KPF that can come in and play next year and also a KPF that will be ready to go the year after. Then we can look at our midfield with our second round pick. Either this or we get Gumbleton. The simple matter is that we need to get another KPF this off season or else we will be to one dimensional going in to our forard line next year. It worked this year but Pav will be a year older and other teams may catch on to us.

Here's my assessment of the KP picks in this years draft from W.A, ranked in order.

1. Jesse Hogan
2. Mason Shaw
3. Brant Colledge
4. Tom Lee
5. Marco Paparone
6. Alex Howson

Fair to say Fremantle will end up with 2 or more of this crop on their payroll by the end of the recruiting season.

I would agree with the top 3, but I'd have Howson next up. I know you have a problem with his non-existant defensive pressure and he does go missing a bit when he isn't lining up for goal, but I tend to think that stuff can be worked on. A lot of kids who are dominant forwards don't do that in U18s, but quickly learn once they reach the AFL.

As for non-WA key forwards, there are a few mid-draft options that I like. From the third round (even second depending on how they test at the Combine), I'd strongly be considering...

Michael Close (195cm forward - North Ballarat)

Another tall, and yet another who has been hampered by injuries this year. Close started the season well, playing around CHF and as the backup ruckman. And he had a good match for Vic Country too against Queensland, but unfortunately injured his ankle and didn't play again during the Championships. Close still has some filling out to do, but he is a strong mark. Just needs to find some more consistency, and find a way to impact the scoreboard every game.

Spencer White (194cm forward - Western Jets)

At the start of the year, I had White as one of my top KPFs to watch. That was based largely on potential rather than performances at the time, but as the year has gone on he has started to perform more consistently. And I still wouldn't put it past him to go in the second round, he offers something different to the other prospects. He still has a long way to go, particularly needs to focus on what he does when he isn't kicking for goal because often he can go missing. But he is a big strong target up forward, is very good in the air and is an accurate shot on goal.

Liam Flaherty (195cm forward - Eastlake)

Liam is a 19 year old tall forward from the ACT, and is part of the GWS Academy but I'd expect a number of other teams to have him well and truly on their radar. He missed most of last year with a hamstring injury, so you could essentially take this as his draft year. He has played in the Championships for NSW, as well as both U18s and senior football back home in Canberra. He looks to be a really talented player - strong hands, good speed around the ground and he is clean below his knees. But most importantly, he kicks goals.

And towards the end of the draft, two I like are...

Jackson Coleman (196cm forward - Sandringham)

I was really quite disappointed that Coleman didn't get picked up last year, was hoping that Fremantle would give him a shot actually. He is a big strong kid, with very strong hands. Last year, he kicked close to 40 goals for the season in the TAC Cup. And this year as a 20 year old, he has made his VFL debut and has been solid with an average of 2 goals a game. Last year, you could just see him improving with every game and he has all the signs of being a late developer. Hopefully he gets his chance this year.

Josh Porter (194cm forward - Murray Bushrangers)

Porter appears to be a relative unknown on these boards, as he is not getting much interest. But he is another with a lot of good attributes, and should be looked at purely for his size and contested marking ability. He missed last season with a foot injury, but this year he has held down the CHF position and has been getting better each week. His kicking could maybe do with a bit of work, but for someone as big and strong as he is, his defensive work is surprisingly good.

Good to hear Lyon still believes we need KPF.
Halfway through the season he said something about our key forward stocks are very bare.
When i heard that i thought, great he is going to try and fix that problem in the draft.

Then hearing him talk about how our mids arent up to it and we need more quality, made me think oh crap here we go again more flanker types who could play mid come draft time.

I think he's foxing. Let everyone know publicly that you want mids so the other teams think that some of the KPPs will be around for their next pick and they grab the mid first. I think this draft period is going to be bigger than normal due to free agency. If a few of the big guns move early, like Cloke/Goddard, they'll be a huge shuffling of the deck chairs.

My wish list is to be in front by the end of trade week like last year and not sell the farm for a big tilt next season. Been there and it's never worked for us. Our list is fairly young besides the bookends, replace that and we can still be good after they retire.

And while I'm here, there is another tricky little option I'd like to see us looking at in trade week. Last year, the Gold Coast signed Dayne Zorko as a Queensland zone selection, and then traded him to Brisbane. The Suns still have priority access to Queenslanders this year, and I'd like to see us take advantage of that. There are two players in particular that I like...

Clay Cameron (191cm defender - Mt Gravatt)

While I think the Gold Coast will have to pass on some of the Queensland talent due to list management, I can't see them saying no to Cameron - if for some reason they did, I'd take him in the second round. I rated him as one of the best KPPs in the draft coming into the season, and that was regardless of if he played up forward or down back. Unfortunately he had an interrupted start of the season and never quite showed what he is truly capable of - but he has performed well in the AFL/AIS Academy. Strong above his head and above average athletically, I like him as a CHB personally.

Andrew Boston (180cm midfielder - Broadbeach)

If they didn't already have issues with list size, I doubt the Gold Coast would hesitate in signing Boston as a zone selection. He'd be the best midfielder to come out of Queensland this year, and would be a great fit for them. He has a strong body after playing in the seniors for two years, and is a real leader on the field. But he also some flair to his game, both in terms of skills and an ability to go forward. Looks to be a very well rounded player, and would probably be more appreciated if he played for a Division 1 team.

Not sure what we could offer, because the Suns already have an issue in terms of list size. But I'd offer up our second rounder, and see what happened.

Or, people could read before they post.

I actually did read and most importantly watch Paparone and thought he looked quite handy, never said we should use our first draft pick on him, so I don't really understand the defensive response.

Maybe I offended you by saying he looked 'Very' good, so I will change that to 'reasonably' good, maybe even good enough for a pick in the second round; taking into consideration those KPP's rated above him are gone

I wonder if our first round pick for there second round pick (we drop 5-6 spots) for Lee and one of the players you mentioned would be a win win trade. (They could through in there third round pick if they dont intend to use it)

I dont see our second pick being of much interest to them.

Although for us to do this, we would need to delist another 2-3 players to have

I wasn't talking to you with the whole read before you post thing.

I provided my assessment of him as a prospect, nothing more nothing less.
