2012 Draft wish list

Has there been any discussion about Ben Saunders? Would be a good rookie pickup, or late draft pick. Obviously not as tall as Tom Lee, but his record speaks for itself. Kicked 66 goals in the league team, and in reserves kicked 68 goals in 18 games for the 2011 season.
Mature age rookie, and would be ready to play next year, would have to be better than Roberts, Houghton, Sibosido, etc
who couldnt even dominate Wafl.

Has a bit of Luke Webster about him for mine (not a bad thing, just saying is all).

Just wanted to get everyones views on something. Lets say it gets to our first pick in the draft and Shaw, Jaeksch and stringer are all gone. Who would be your number one target? If all those three are gone then there is going to be a couple of classy midfielder that slide to our pick. I would love our first pick to be O'rourke, but 100% sure he will be already gone by then. If he is gone i would like to taje the gamble on Menzel. If he passes all the medicals and our fittness staff are happy that his knees, and the rest of his body, are in good shape then would love u to pounce on him. He could relly turn out to be the Joel Selood of the draft.
My friend that lives in SA and has watched him play a bit and he said the kid is an asolute star in the making. He has compard him to Fyfe but wiht better skills, and kicks more goals. A midfield that had Fyfe, Crozier, Menzel and Morabito rotating through the forward line has massive X factor, pace and goal kicking ability. They are all around the 190cm mark as well so when they pushed forward they would create a massiv head ache for defenders.
He would be my preference but i am keen to here everyones else views. Thanks guys

Figured I'd bump this thread, because I need somewhere to talk about the draft. The Draft Combine started yesterday, and the first lot of results are up...

STANDING VERTICAL JUMP
Dean Towers - 85cm
Jesse Lonergan - 83cm
Spencer White - 82cm
Eric Wallace - 80cm
Laine Wilkins - 75cm
RUNNING VERTICAL JUMP
Spencer White - 100cm
Laine Wilkins - 97cm
Jesse Lonergan - 91cm
Eric Wallace - 91cm
Benjamin Shearry - 89cm
Dean Towers - 89cm

Taking away the Americans (Wallace and Shearry) the top four are all players I've been interested in for Fremantle. Lonergan and Towers might fall into the awkward spot between our first and second round picks, but we should have a chance at Wilkins and White from the second round onwards. In terms of what type of players they are, I see them as...

Dean Towers = a better Tendai Mzungu
Jesse Lonergan = a better Nick Lower
Spencer White = a better Adam Campbell (I know, maybe not saying much)
Laine Wilkins = I don't know, he is just a really fast and athletic forward/wing

What on earth is wrong with Tower's running vertical leap? Only 4cm's better than his standing leap.

Weird.

The 3 big Americans look great physically and athletically, would be interesting to see them develop into AFL footballers, but at around 200cm and 100kgs it would be worth having a good look at them long term.

Time to shamelessly promote another player, and of course he is a South Australian...

Emmanual Irra is a 179cm/80kg midfielder from South Adelaide, originally from Uganda. He can also play across half forward and half back, and it is in the back lines that I think he will make his career. JWK may not have worked out as our Roger replacement, but I think E-Man can.

The AFL website says this about him...

“Small midfielder who is extremely quick and skilful on both sides. Born in Uganda and has already played senior football at South Adelaide. Played for the World Team in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships before playing for SA in the 2011 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. Has a huge appetite for the game and a big upside in terms of future development. From AIS-AFL Academy’s 15th intake. ”

I say this...

One of the most intriguing players in the draft, I really don't know where he will be picked. I would go earlier than some others might, because I love what I've seen and I've maybe seen more of him than others. His form for SA in the Championships wasn't amazing, but it was only a tiny taste of what he can do. And admittedly, he was somewhat limited by injuries. He provides great run off of half back and through the midfield, and has excellent skills - better than what a lot of lifelong AFL players can do. Skills, speed and run. There are plenty of reasons to draft him.

And here is a recent article on him. I particularly like the way they described him as 'gliding across the turf'.

Even with Danyle Pearce coming on board, we still need more pace. Having Irra on a back flank (or even back pocket) would give us huge amounts of run out of the back line. And his skills are already top notch. Perhaps needs to refine his defensive game a little more. But in the third round, I'd find it hard to pass on him.

Just saw the write up on the afl website about Tim Membrey, what's everyones thoughts on him? Think he would be great if he slipped to our second pick but I doubt that will happen

Re Menzel, I would assume that if all of Shaw, Jaksch, Stringer and in the MD, Hogan are not coming to Freo, then Wines, or Kennedy may be available (who knows). I would prefer them given Menzels injury history, including that he has recently re-injured the knee from reports I have read. I just don't think the call can be made this far out from the draft except to say that there should be quality available.

Bingo.

Someone of quality is gonna slide to us, doubt we could pass up any of those players, even if a lanky half bank flanker is available :p

Another great Emma Quayle article.

'Back then I thought I was fit and I thought I was working hard, but I wasn't doing anywhere near enough. I thought: 'OK, I'll do the bare minimum and be just as good as these other guys', when they were in there on their days off doing extra stuff to get even better. I didn't have the right attitude, which I hate to say, but it's the truth, and now that I've grown up a bit I have a much better work ethic and that's helped me get much fitter. Over time you realise that when it's late in the last quarter, you want to be the one still running and hitting your targets.''

The clubs that have interviewed Lee at this week's draft combine - Fremantle, Brisbane Lions, Geelong, Richmond, Melbourne and St Kilda - have all wanted to know the same things, and he hopes he has convinced them how serious he is.
Melbourne, Richmond are looking for the second tall, Brisbane will be interested if they don't get Tippett.
Geelong looking for a replacement for there old 31 year old full forward (I forgot this name), and St Kilda looking for a replacement for Kosi and Riewoldt.
Bloody hell i hope we trade with GWS and don't need to wait until the draft, someone will get him before our third round pick.

Carlton seem to be sniffing around every tall forward available. Mason Shaw would be a fairly realistic option for them at 11.
