At the moment, this is how I predict the first round will go...

1. Greater Western Sydney - Lachie Whitfield
2. Greater Western Sydney - Jimmy Toumpas
3. Greater Western Sydney - Lachie Plowman
4. Melbourne - Ollie Wines
5. Western Bulldogs - Jonathon O'Rourke
6. Western Bulldogs - Troy Menzel
7. Port Adelaide - Brodie Grundy
8. Brisbane Lions - Kristian Jaksch
9. Richmond - Nick Vlastuin
10. Essendon - Joe Daniher
11. Carlton - Jackson Macrae
12. Greater Western Sydney - Sam Mayes
13. Gold Coast - Josh Simpson
14. Greater Western Sydney - Aidan Corr
15. North Melbourne - Ben Kennedy
16. Geelong - Jake Stringer
17. Fremantle - Nathan Hrovat

So, I expect a few of the names mentioned so far today will have been taken before our pick. As for the rest of the first round, Collingwood are a tough one to predict...

18. Collingwood - Tim Membrey
19. Collingwood - Tom Clurey
20. Collingwood - Nathan Wright
21. Western Bulldogs - Taylor Garner
22. Sydney Swans - Jesse Lonergan/Dayle Garlett

But if I'm right (highly unlikely) we could have our choice of Hrovat, Garner, Lonergan, Garlett or any number of KPPs.

This sounds reasonably close Chris. Surprised Freo would go Hrovat or any mid unless it was a Stringer or similar quality slider. Would have thought Membrey/Shaw/Clurey/O'Brien are in the headlights.

As for Collingwood I see us taking a mix:
One of Garlett/Simpson if available
One of Hrovat/Lonegran/Wright
One of Membrey/Garner/Clurey if available

Lower might've made way precisely for the likes of Hrovat. It's looking as if the likes of Shaw are increasingly looking like a reach at pick 17. It really could be anyone still at this pick, it seems.

When does Emma Quayle do her mock draft? If I remember rightly last year it was the day before?

Lots of 'experts' have us taking Membrey or O'Brien. It seems most recognise the fact that we are in dire need of a big forward.

Hey guys - I had Freo on the Brisbane board's phantom draft. Would love to hear your opinions on whether I judged your team OK.

Needs:
  • Someone to take the reigns from Pav
  • Someone as backup to McPharlin (and perhaps Faulks)
  • More mid depth
Picks:
17 - Mason Shaw (though apparently, this is overreaching now. It wasn't when I made the selection 2 days ago :p funny how this happens. He hasn't played a game or anything, and he's dropping down the order).
37 - Kamdyn McIntosh (I was quite chuffed at - I've heard him linked to both Freo and Geelong's first rounders, though personally, I think that's too much).
40 - Matthew Haynes (it wouldn't be a Freo draft without a skinny running midfielder... even if he's not a HBF, which you guys seem to take ALL THE TIME).

I thought Membrey was more of a Chris Mayne than a genuine key forward?

I suspect you have done a better job for us than Chris Bond will. :(

I'd be surprised if Colledge was gone before our picks in the second round. As highly as I rate him, he should be there.

As for Hrovat, I don't see any issue with him at Subi or playing alongside Barlow. You still need ball winners and clearance players on the bigger grounds. Guys like Sam Mitchell and Peter Bell never seemed to have too many issues. As long as you can run all day, then they'll be fine - and Hrovat can do that. I like Lonergan, but I feel Hrovat will be the better player.

My only problem is that we're going to have very few rookie spots, with possible re-draftings in Crichton/Lower, we could potentially only have 1 new rookie on our list next year. Would have been nice to rookie list a couple of KPPs.

Hope your right Chris and that we then actually take him, very keen on him since PavDawn's rundown on him. If we take neither him nor another like Shaw at 17 and they are gone by our next picks I will go spare.

I read some where membrey plays Footy a bit like Darling.Similar height to Darling too.

Membrey is 1cm taller and the same weight as Mayne according to wikipedia and the courier mail.

Also 2cm shorter than Darling.

Here he is in his own words:

"I'm 189cm which isn't your ideal key-position, so I'm more looking at being that third tall who can play higher up the ground and trying work the opponent over,"

"Jack Darling's 190 but he definitely plays like a key forward, with strong hands and a good kick for goal, so I model my game on him"

There's even a crappy vid of him...

Pretty nice contested marking on display.

17. Fremantle
TIM MEMBREY

HEIGHT: 189cm
CLUB: Gippsland Power
Aggressive medium forward in Jack Darling mould. Clean marking and golden boot could boost Freo’s forward potency immediately.

Would not be unhappy. Would start to love Bondy all over again. Imagine if he was also able to rotate through the midfield.

Well, I'd be pretty friggin unhappy. Third tall forward. What a waste of a first round pick.

Mayne is already established in this role. Mellington can probably work there in a pinch... he's about the same height.

A key position tall is the real need. If we pick up an undersized junior KPF who hasn't done any work in the midfield, then I'll spew.

Better than a slow, small clearance player that we have also been linked to. Looking at the top 30 in the Herald Sun and just about everywhere else, a couple of tall forwards like Shaw, Colledge, Spencer, Paperone, Close are most likely going to be available at 37.(36). As will defenders like Frost who we are also keen on. Membrey is ready to go and the others can develop on our list for a little while. Doubt Shaw will be there, but it looks like the others may be. Having sais that, it will probably turn out completely differently on the day and we may go for Hrovat (god forbid) or Clurey, O'Brien or someone else who may slip. We will know in six days.

Yeah, dunno what the Hrovat love is all about. We've already got a midget we drafted last year that's pretty reasonable around the clearances.

Hrovat may well be the second coming of Sam Mitchell, so I wouldn't completely lose my sh!t if we picked him up. But Membrey is really hard to get excited about.

In typical Freo fashion, there's every chance we'll take someone like Nathan Wright. He's mid sized defender (read flanker) but he's apparently very quick, and a good rebounder. Would love us to get a hold of someone like Garner or Simpson instead... but as you say, who really knows.

EDIT: Or even Garlett. But don't see us picking him up, really.

Ok. I will just have to be excited about Membrey on my own. :)

I'm still very happy to "Reach" for Shaw at 17, given he fits our needs, isn't going to run off home and was talented enough to kick a bag in a grand final two years ago before Mitch Brown broke his jaw and derailed his season.

We aren't talking about pick 5 here, it should be the last pick of round one.
