Just had a look at Simpson too.. wow speed and skill.. was dead keen on a tall but if this guy slips that far would be very hard to say no to.

I could not agree more, another smoke screen to frighten off the other clubs, as I said in an earlier post where there's smoke there's fire. If he is available at WCE first pick he will be an Eagle.

IMO interstate clubs will steer of J.Simpson now knowing that he is dad.

Bloody eagles probably forced him to have a child, hide the fact and then reveal it a week before the draft in the hopes he would slide to their pick! Sneaky bastards.

Starting to come around to idea of not taking a tall first pick if the first pick is Simpson - he even looks like a taller version of Roger Hayden to me.
If we can manage him with our first and Shaw with our 2nd round I would be OTM. Both need to be sliders though.

Whether or not contrived I think your right, if by some chance Garlett is there at WCE first pick they would take him. After all looks like Newman might have be on the sidelines for a while.....
Hopefully Simpson's kid does scare off GC and Geelong so he can slide to us. We were getting excited about D Pearce and Hill in the same team what if it was them plus Simpson.
If this were to happen and then factoring in Morabito's return, it really would be hard to blame us for getting super pumped for next year, that combination would monster teams at Subi.

Bit of doing the right thing by Simpson and his little baby girl.
Not sure we need Simpson for this reason. Unless he is really that good and on the right side of the risk/reward calculation, why wouldn't we get a Pav/McPharlin replacement with our first pick when Hilly and Pearce will be around for a while.
Would only be interested in O'Brien or Garlett out of that lot. Definitely not interested in Membrey unless by some stroke of amazingness we can pick him up at 40.
It all depends on the relative merits of the players - e.g. O'Brian/Jaksch/Shaw Vs Simpson. If we could be sure the KPP we take is a direct Pav/McPharlin replacement then I agree 100% But if we are not sure of that and Simpson is going to be able to deliver it lace out off either foot to any leading target we have or gain 80-90m with run and precision out of the backline after breaking clear of congestion with his pace then the choice maybe favours Simpson and gong best available KPP's (two) at 37 and 40 like Colledge etc., despite have Mora and DPearch and Hill already. Or again you have another player in reserve for these three at least.
If we get no reasonable KPP in the draft (pref at least 2) I will go spare - all depends on the ratings of the players by Lloyd and Bond about our first in particular pick though. Shaw Vs Simpson in particular though would think Freo have very clear ideas about.
O'Brien appears to be the most logical choice. Very close to best available and will fill a need.
I'm with Seppo. We can pick up a mid in the first round next year. There is no urgency.

Freo do seem to like skinnier guys with a lot of potential for improvement and I for one think that is a good strategy with a pick around this mark. Tim O'Brien seems to fit the mold perfectly. I still think Josh Simpson will be our number one preference but I think if he goes then this is our guy.
I am wondering whether we'll take Simpson as a replacement for Roger Hayden? Definitely has the skills to be one of the best HB distributers in the game in a few seasons, even if he's been played as a mid/fwd so far, I can see his skillset being more useful for us down back. With leaping Luke looking to retire in the next couple of seasons, we'll need more drive off HB. I'm warming to the idea of MJ and Simpson distributing off HB.
I won't be gutted if we go small here (as we could use some more drive out of defence).
Otherwise, Clurey or O'brien would be a good fit as a much needed KPP. I'm hoping Shaw will slide to our second rounder, as I think a season or 2 of Pav's expert tutelage will improve his leading considerably.

To be honest if Simpson wasn't a Freo supporter and a WA boy who wants to play with us, I wouldn't have any interest in recruiting him this year. A real luxury in our present situation and we have no urgent need for him positionally. Having said that if he was available it sounds like we would take him.
Draft day tomorrow, cant wait! In the Gold Coast now, i will see if i can get a ticket. If i do, i will report back.
