I get the excitement assciated with Grundy given our lack of ruck depth , however , we have a 22 year old ruckman who was taken a pick 8 in the same draft as undoubtedly the most promising ruckman to enter the game for some time and was at the time when drafted considerd only slightly behind that player.
It is not impossible to suspect the ruck ratio over the next 4-5 years to be:
2013 : 70% maric 30 % Vickery
2014 : 50/50
2015 : 70 % Vickery 30% Maric
2016 : 80 % Vickery 20 % Maric
2017 : 80% Vickery (Maric retired )
2018 : 80% Vickery
Yes it would be great to have a top round draft pick, to tuck away for 4 years until havig a need for them , however over that time it is very likely players like Tuck, Jackson, Newman, Foley and Lids, either retire or start to tail off in performances.
Now some may say suggesting Lids will drop off in the next few years is getting a bit carried away/unnecessary, given to his age , however the workload he has had to carry to date is beyond what most are asked to carry.
The big query is whether the club is going to start upping the ante on Vickery in regards to the ruck workload he is required to play .
Or is the plan to play him as a solely 3rd tall forward whilst we have a forward like Griffiths, who many believed at the time of drafting was a top 10 pick bar injury, not getting a game.
Using 2 first round picks within 5 years upon a ruckman doesn't sit that well with me TBH, and to pick Grundy, or the like, with a first pick , is pretty much an admission I think that Vickery will not make a number 1 ruckman and that he is likely to amount to little more than a 3rd tall forward.
FWIW I think Vickery has had the red carpet rolled out for him long enough and it's about time he started performing to the level he showed he was capable of at TAC level. Therefore signifcantly reducing the need to again use a first round pick on a ruckman , just yet.
