The thing is as we gain success on the ladder our chances of getting these 'amazing' players drift. What do you want. Finals footy or bottom ladder 'amazing' picks? Can't have it both ways and the way I see it people need to change their ideas about our drafting in the next couple of years. We'll build our team to finals/gf standard over that time through different means and on less than the best picks of the draft. The only way we get to improve our drafts from the top end of the ladder is by being able to trade good players for good draft picks. We aren't there yet so just go with the flow.
Dude I have read your post now 4 times and really cant understand how its relevant to my post ? more than happy to revisit if you can perhaps try 1 more time

Interesting to hear Lonergan came in at number one in the AFL's "AFL120e" rankings. Or what shifter refers to as their "Moneyball rankings". Previous number one's have been Devon Smith and Dion Prestia.

Would be very happy with Lonergan, a leap the same as NicNat and elite agility and repeat sprints. That's X factor when you see see he can clearly play.

One name we haven't discussed much on this board is Mayes.

Why is that? Limited as a mid or fwd? Not enough inside? Can kick, but is that just a party trick?

I've read comparisons with Griffen. Well, that'd be bloody handy!

TV have you got a few other afl moneyball rankings? Love that stuff. Big fan of using stuff like that in recruiting.

All I was told was that Clurey was number two and Lonergan was number one. I know guys like Caddy, Heppell and Brad Crouch rated highly in previous years. Sorry I couldn't tell you more

Lonergan is starting to sound like our kind of pick
I think your right. Does anyone know how many kids are invited to the actual draft??? With Conca a couple of years ago we pretty much knew we were taking Conca as he got a late invite. Wonder if Lonergan got the same thing whether it would be only us interested.

For me I'd prefer to look at home grown vic kids (or Tassie), unless others are clearly better I'd be concerned about the go home factor. A prime example is Knights on our web site, an interstate kid is always looking for the trip home. Having moved myself I can attest to this, sure there are plenty of examples where it's worked fine but it a risk you wouldn't take unless there is a clear upside.

Dont think we should worry about a go home factor with SA kids. How many in the past have actually wanted to head back to SA?? Thompson and Monfries to an extent otherwise you dont see it often.

risk no, for good reason yes

And even monfries went home because he wasn't wanted at the bombers. Very rarely do players go back to SA. Reminds me of a time someone from a south australian paper was in melbourne and interviewing cooney at a presser. Tried to start asking about whether he'd go back to SA and cooney said 'oh so you're from south australia? You got out too! '

I've been on the Vlas wagon but gee Lonergan is an intriguing prospect. Just a pure power athlete. Would almost be like having two Dustins. Anyone know what his TFL stats were like pre injury?

I've been searching but can't find any pre injury or from the finals series he played. He was named in the best in the grand final losing side. but that's about the extent of what you can find

:) fair enough...I can see the argument Melbourne is a great place to live. From experience family and mates are a strong pull regardless

Anderson (essendon) Jarman(hawks) Hall (hawks) Thompson(melb)
So only really Thomson in the last 15 years then. If we are starting to make finals as we should be then im confident we will have a good enough environment that most wont want to leave a very exciting time at Punt Road

X-Factor is overrated.
Yes it's obviously match winning from time to time, but I think Dimma's philosophy is different.
We have a very 'defence-first' mindset and personally, I think it's the way to go.
Vlastuin would be a solid choice at 9 and could turn into someone like a Luke Hodge.
Those are the type of players who stand-up during finals time.
But they're boring to watch.:cool:

The things I've read which I like, been playing or senior football for Launsteston since 15, key player in GF (speaks volumes for a kid), balancing HSC and a returning early from a PCL to play last few TAC games, best conversation he had with a coach was Dimma. None better at the combine for goal kicking .- Quigley rates him 8th. In saying all that the club will know a lot more and if they go Vlastuin happy with that. Also Like Kennedy for different reasons.

The HUNs phantom draft had him at 21 and the footy tragic had him at 24.

Also the footy tragic said the late mail was GWS could pass on Jimmy Toumpas and Melbourne are a chance to swoop leaving Wines to possibly go at 9. Nice dream if it happened.

Emma Quayle and Brett Anderson think he's right in the mix to go to Carlton, GC.

No doubt Lonergan is a stretch at 9, div 2 doesn't help help him...but he is captain not much more he could do.

Interesting, the ball drop with wines looks odd, may be putting a few off.
