Emma Quayle and Brett Anderson think he's right in the mix to go to Carlton, GC.
If Brissy take Jaksch I think Carlton's first preference is Macrae. GC want Corr/Simpson as first preference I believe. So fair chance he gets through them.

Edit: Carlton board will be hilarious if they take Lonergan. They were bagging us at the rumour we'd take him with typical Richmond, thought Wallace was gone etc. hahaha

What is this "x factor" people keep banging on about?

I can't help but think "inconsistent". I.e. win a game off their own boot one week, then go missing for a month. Or are you referring to the fact that you're expecting our recruiters to jag the type of player that there is generally only two or three of in every draft, with pick 9? Obviously on face value I have a fair idea what you're meaning, just not sure it's that easy to say "we should get a couple of players with x factor", and at the same time get two or three 150+ game players from our 4 picks.

Interested to hear from the "x factor" camp exactly what you are looking for that defines it.

Look my comment is twfold:

1. why go all one way and just draft mids- we have mids- we have some that have not even played really- and granted we need one or 2 more- so why draft 4? we need to mix it up a bit. for me as I have always said if he is avail lets get grundy. mids go as far back as 40 in this draft.

2. x factor is that something special. not the workmanlike tuck but the matchwinning types. granted they can go missing but i would say grundy is x- spencer is x- garner is x- I know the club has done its work and sussed out the kids so I am hoping they will make informed balanced choices to really beef up our firepower. that all.

this draft is so crucial to us we dont want to go all one way. we ahve to get it right.

Point 1 - I believe this is more supporter assumption than anything. The club has indicated mids will be a priority, but not sure they're on record saying we'll only take mids. Anyway, I agree, re: Grundy, and if Grundy is not there, then look at a KPP later in the draft.

Point 2 - who would you say on our list, currently, has X factor? Off the top of my head, I'd say Cotchin, Riewoldt, Martin and Edwards - the latter two, particularly Edwards, can be a little inconsistent IMO. Any you would add?

jack has x factor. edwards I am not that keen on but he did show glimpses last year. menzel has x factor, would really look at him as well. we have to balance tough workers with matchwinners. we lost so many matches this year due to poor decisions, shitting ourselves and not putting the game away.

point 1 . Obviously a few on this forum get leaks, but it is not in the clubs interest to put out too much. i certainly
enjoy the bits and prices we do get.

Tim McGenniss reminds me so much of Nathan Foley in many ways. Tough little ranga whose at the bottom of packs. Very good clearance player, good speed so can get on the outside. Super hard worker and trainer who will run through brick walls to make it. Better kick than Axel though. Warming to this kid and think if developed well and we put the time into him he'll be a hidden gem at 43.

Interesting to hear Lonergan came in at number one in the AFL's "AFL120e" rankings. Or what shifter refers to as their "Moneyball rankings". Previous number one's have been Devon Smith and Dion Prestia.
It's too early for that to mean anything.

Alright, my turn to give my draft prediction (by prediction, I mean unashamed stabs in the dark!). I have tried to keep my final selection realistic, but noted some more hopeful options, should there be some sliders. I will also add, I'm no expert, and have based this on viewing some highlights, some champ's games footage, insights from guys like KM, Chris25 etc, and other general media insights... anyway, here goes:

9 - Would love Grundy or Menzel, and warming to Lonergan if he's on the club's radar... but has to be Vlastuin (inside mid/def).

32 - Would love a slider out of Garner, Kennedy, Hrovat, Membrey (or Lonergan?). All that said, I've gone with Atkins (fwd/mid), on the basis I've gone the pure mids at 9 & 43.

34 - Considered Pongracic, Broomhead, Shaw, Haynes and White. Settled on Tanner Smith (def). We have a number of KPD's, but lack that big, lock down defender, which I think Smith could become. Went KPP here for some draft balance (i.e. wanted to avoid mids, mids, mids!)

43 - McGenniss (inside mid). Interviewed well, high character, plus wins the contested ball. Could be a real mid draft steal.

Would also look, either later draft/rookie at guys like:
Anthony Tipungwuti - small, quick forward - X factor!
Darcy Fort - ruck - likely won't have room/won't be a priority, but wouldn't be against giving the kid a rookie spot (assuming we miss on Grundy, of course!)
Shane Nelson - bit of the Nathan Foley's about him IMO. If I understand correctly, there are less rookie spots available now (plus we're looking more to ready made/AFL experienced players to fill our rookie list), so probably unlikely... plus, may get taken in the draft.

Good stab in the dark Damo80

I wouldn't be against a 2nd rounder being used on Tanner Smith. When i read he could last to picks in the 30's I floated it on this thread. About 50-60 pages and 436 posts debating Grundy ago. :D

Thanks Tigs. Like I alluded too, KPD doesn't necessarily seem a glaringhole on our list - if anything, KPF's is what we're a little thin on - but I like the fact that he's reasonably big, and a pure lock down defender. We then have Griff and Astbury who could go forward, and I have high hopes for Elton.

Can't disagree with any of that. I'd probably still go Thurlow/Atkins over Smith but no guarantees they'll both be there.

i think we can rule out drafting menzel and stringer, they are just too big a risk and its not the type of selection that Francis Jackson is going to make, even if both are available. So to all those who keep saying where going to get these guys, or i want one of them, just stop and acknowledge the fact that neither will be in a RFC top next year. our pick 9 will be Vlaustin, there is no doubt about it imo

I'm sure there are lots of differing perceptions. My idea of X factor or what your looking for in a top 10 pick is that extra something that a player has the differentiate themselves from the pack. Does not mean inconsistent. Ie better vision or decision making than most - Edwards. Sheer pace - Jetta. Courage - Selwood. Contested mark - Richo. That something that makes them dangerous.

imo x factor is little like nth's shinboner spirit. it imaginary and worthless. those nth teams were just GOOD. all players have their strengths and weaknesses and it's up to us to develop those traits regardless of where they are drafted. and i also think this x factor doesnt have to be that flashy stuff it can be just the basic's as well, chasing, tackling, shepherding etc.

I really like Broomhead for some reason. Vlastuin, Broomhead, Atkins and a nice gem at 43 would be delightful.

Me too but he's a Port boy. It's done and dusted if he lasts till Port's picks.

I have a feeling Port will screw us and take Atkins.

Add Grundy and that'll make it twice in one draft and three picks in a row since last year's PSD.
