His Combine results will probably see him be lucky to get drafted.

Bottom 3% in 3km trial.
Bottom 21% in repeat sprints.
Bottom 1% in V02 max.
10.5 beep.
Bottom 13% in agility.
Bottom 20% in all sprints.
Bottom 23% in standing jump.

There'd want to be a reason for that.
Lol they are awful. He's tanked some of them though. Sprints and jump at a minimum. Knew his endurance wasn't great.

Thing is though on the field he moves faster than a Dean Towers who ran one of the fastest sprints. Uses his leap more effectively than some guys who tested at the top. May mean we could get him at our 5th pick which we can use if we want to.

I still really want Marvin Warrell with pick 43. A lot to work with for a mid-range pick. Quick, dual-sided skills, great goal sense, very good tackler, good leap with strong overhead marking ability and he's a decent size for a small forward. Can push him into the midfield or even play him off half back like a Chris Yarran. Plays well in the big games too. Best on in this years GF and kicked 4 goals in last years.

If we pick him up at 43 after those stats FJ should be sacked.

As I said he's tanked some of those tests. He'd do well in everything bar endurance if he wasn't. Even then he can run around and be top possession winner in the WAFL Colts GF. 23 possessions 3 goals.

FWIW Grundy at SANFL level

Rd 8
8 disposals 1 mark 7 hitouts 0.0
Rd 16
9 disposals 4 marks 7 hitouts 0.0
Rd 17
6 disposals 0 marks 5 hitouts 0.0
Rd 18
3 disposals 1 marks 7 hitouts 0.0
Rd19
6 disposals 3 marks 15 hitouts 0.0
Rd 21
6 disposals 1 mark 31 hitouts 0.0
Rd 22
8 disposals 0 marks 22 Hitouts 0.0
Rd 24
5 disposals 1 mark 9 Hitouts 0.0

51 possessions in 8 games at a bit over 6 per game. Only 3 games managed to get double figure hitouts whilst not impacting on the scoreboard in any game with a grand total off 11 marks in 8 games. If we recruited him and he did that for Coburg I'd hate to see the reaction on here. IMO he'll turn out to be a pretty good player but he's certainly not the ready made prospect that people on here seem to think he is. Long way to go with Grundy.

Reserves level

Rd 5
4 disposals 0 marks 29 hitouts 0.0
Rd 7
13 disposals 4 marks 25 hitouts 0.2
Finals Week 1
13 disposals 4 marks 28 hitouts 1.0
Finals Week 2
7 disposals 1 mark 24 hitouts 0.0
Prelim Final
10 dispoals 1 mark 22 hitouts 0.0

47 disposals in 5 games at 9.4 per game. Averaging 25.6 hitouts and only 1 goal total at 3rds level. Remember what Big Browney did at 3rds level and he didn't get a game at AFL yet we think Grundy is ready-made.
If you wouldnt mind please post those stats over on PRE.

Stats, schmats, I know what I saw and still want him.

From Emma Qualyes blog from earlier today;

Hi Emma, Great article on Vlastuin today. Do you think he is well and truly locked in at Richmond's pick? or are there a few they'll be considering until Thursday when they make the decision? Would they look at Mayes or Grundy if they slip?
  • Thanks Elliot. I would say he's fairly safe there. Talking to some people today and they think they could go for Grundy but seems to me they've been into Vlastuin for a long time.

Unlikely that FJ would change late, but if Grundy is available it doesn't look like Vlas is a 100% lock

Vlas thinks he is going to Richmond, from what I understand

This is the part that is of concern for me - Do we pick & focus on a particular player too much that it clouds our judgment when it comes to selection time - Do we become so Bias towards that player that we fail to see the greener pastures that may be over the yonder

Does that really tell the whole story? Wasn't Polec the one guy meant to be ready to hit the ground running after doing well in SANFL... 2 years down teh track and he has had little impact.

Humble Minion reckons he's possibly even better prospect than NicNait, more ready to play (NicNat played 12-15 in his firs tyear IIRC). If he's right (and quite often he is), turning that down at anything past pick 3-4 will be preeetty ballsy.

His highlights clip looks great doesn't it?

As did his entire champs, we're he dominated the kids he'll be up against in the draft. :thumbsu:

I think it tells the story that he's not the ready made prospect everyone makes him out to be. I certainly don't think he's as good as NicNat. He's a man child. Don't get me wrong he'll be a good player. (or at least I think he will) I just think he's getting overly hyped with the comparisons to NicNat who lets face it is an absolute freak athlete, which Grundy whilst good is miles behind.

How common would it be for an 18 year old ruckman, presumably playing second ruck with limited gametime (often behind Josh Jenkins at Sturt, for example), to get bigger stats than that at SANFL level?

Ivan got little of it when playing for the Crows...

The kids he dominated likely won't get drafted though...

The other rucks that seem in contention are Fort who didn't play and Hannath/Currie (mature age recruits)

People are missing my point. My point isn't that he's a spud, it's that he's ready made to come in and be in our best 22 as a 2nd ruck/CHF. He's far from that.

As a second ruck he'd play forward and he didn't kick a goal. Games where he played first ruck he couldn't get near the footy.

I have two points here.

1. He's not ready made and likely won't get many (any) games over Ivan or Tyrone.

2. He's not clearly ahead of others in the top 10 and that's the reason GWS won't take him top 3 and he'll likely last till the teens.

Not just the other ruckman, was dominant went he ran through the middle (as ruckman do) and killed it up forward. Was my clearest memory of the champs and the one that's stayed with me - and like most Richmond supporters I expect - I was trying to concentrate on the mids and wasn't really looking for him.

Can barely remember Vlastuin in comparison - though to be fair whether that was down to him or me I can't say.;)

I follow your point.
I wouldn't be taking Grundy with the expectation that he'd be right to go. At all. Which, given we are not exactly set to win the flag next year isn't that big a deal.
Vlastuin would be bench at best anyway
I'd hope Elton will play R1, not Grundy

We'll see.

I only really pay much attention to 5-6 people this time of year, HM is one, foj1 is another both rate him very very highly (top 2-3). For me means he'd be a no-questions-asked, no-brainer at 9, for a side which only has 1 proven ruck. Even Dees could probably do with him at 4 (Jamar being 30 odd and no Martin).

He did kick quite a few goals in the champs, just not at league level.

And given Graham and Browne are gone, a spud like Derickx is still on the list and Cam Wood is training with us suggests a quality young Ruck will be high on our list of priorities

This kids a shoe in for the Power...the media insist they have the headline ready FORT TO PORT..;)

Meaning they will pass on Grundy allowing us to pounce at 9.

Sounds super to me.

On Fort he is very much a project player. I remember watching him in a finals game and he was quite good. Very good tap ruckman, athletic and can take a good mark. However, I'd back Nahas against him in a wrestle. Very skinny, lanky, I think we should pass and go for a safer option if we do want a ruckman.
