Div 2 player and the fact nobody seemed to be mentioning him as a potential first rounder until last weekend is what raises my alarm bells.

Always weary of these late mail/last minute types who seemingly come from nowhere.
as any first rounder or our first rounder?

Last Div 2 was Tambling, correct?
Div 2 should not be a reason to exclude, but it would make you want to take a look at other things.
Not sure Tabling would have been a best player in a senior GF at 17 or exhibbitted elite power athlete results at the combine.
Power inside mid in the mould of Dusty with added pace ???

Doubt we will be forced to use him as our back-up plan but I won't be disappointed.

Anyone heard anything out of the club about our interest in Wines ?

Would we take Wines over Vlastuin ? Any opinions on Wines that have seen more than the highlight clip ?

I would love Lonergan at #32 - Over the moon actually
TBH I certainly wouldnt be too dissapointed if we took him at #9 either

Playing against men at 15 years old
Captain of his team
Fantastic Combine testing
182cm & 90kgs - Strong,Hard,Fast,Skilled
Played as a 17 yo
Compares himself to a martin/watson type

Something very very much to like about Jesse, For some reason i just see alot of Dayne Swan in him

Agree I reckon he is a very safe bet midfielder, he ticks all the boxes that make you think he can make the step to AFL quickly.

I think he is a solid pick at 9 and there is no possibility he will be around at 32. Heard Carlton and North are keen.

Lol it won't be late mail to the clubs though. They watch them for three years so just because big footy is starting to notice him doesn't make him a bolter.

AFL Free Agency, Trade, Draft & Season News
DRAFT NEWS

The Herald Sun can reveal GWS will select devastating outside midfield stars Lachie Whitfield and Jono O'Rourke with its first two picks before calling the name of key defender Lachie Plowman at No.3.

It means Melbourne will land Adelaide's Jimmy Toumpas with pick 4.
...

Ollie Wines could quite easily be overlooked by the bulldogs who have a surplus of inside midfielders.

The dogs are firming to take Troy Menzel and Jakson MaCrae.

Port Adelaide have all but committed to Brody Grundy whilst Brisbane are still tossing up between Sam Mayes and Kristian Jaksch.

It means that the tigers could land the best inside midfielder of the draft with Wines looking likely to slip to Richmond in a dream result.

Watson's also a good 2 inches taller than Wines, got drafted as a tall forward and often pushes forward as a marking target. Important extra string to his bow, shakes off a lot of tags/match-ups that way.
Not any more, Wines is now 188-190cm and 90kg.

Is that right? Quite a growth spurt from what he's listed as on the AFL site. Have they pushed him forward much in juniors?

(FWIW Twomey's article from today has him at 187... so he's made up half the gap, still be interested to find out if/how often/how well he's played fwd/back. Most of these top kids they try and expose at various spots to sell them a bit more)

He's 188/90. He can push forward but I don't think he's even close to Watson's overhead ability.

Hey tigs, Martin_Riewoldt you've probably done it to death, but how do the Vlas/Wines attribute stack up?

Disposal efficiency
Foot skills either side
Pace
Awareness
Tackling
Leadership
Scoring threat

Thanks!

He was nowhere in the reckoning until the combine. The fact is that he is just not as good as the players that will be available at pick 9 and I will be extremely disappointed if we take him there.

I have no idea what their disposal efficiency is. Someone else may have the stats on it.
I rate Vlastuin's kicking as a fair bit above Wines. (dual-sided too)
Vlastuin is also an elite handballer IMO. Wines would still be in the very good category though.
Neither are going to win a sprint but I also don't think either should be classified as slow.
Awareness I'd give to Vlastuin just. He is a fantastic long handball out of packs to teammates.
Both I'd have in the elite category but Wines would just shade him. Wines is a gun in this area.
Vlastuin would be no.1 in the draft for leadership. I've said before he'll be captain after Cotchin.
Neither are a huge scoring threat. Both have shown they can push forward and kick a couple of goals in the odd game. Wines probably more so.
As I've added a category that's in Vlastuin's favour I'll add another important one in for Wines and that is ball-winning and attack on the ball Wines would be ahead. But only just.

I have each shading the other in 3 categories.
Vlastuin (kicking, handball skills and awareness)
Wines (ball-winning, goal-scoring, tackling)

Vlastuin gets the nod with his leadership ability. Not often you can recruit a guy as a future captain.

Nowhere in the reckoning from a fans point of view. There is no way of telling where the recruiters have rated him. Looks a likely type for mine and if we get him at 9 i can only imagine its cause Vlastuin is gone and we are he'll bent on a tough inside mid.

Put it this way, before the combine he'd have been happy to get drafted. This talk of him going top 10 is doing my head in.

Strange draft, it's so fluid in what people are talking about. Anyway, if we get to choose between Vlas and Wines (given my lack of expert knowledge) I wouldn't care which was picked. However, anyone that is talked of as being pretty much a certain future AFL captain has huge ticks on him for me. that sort of leadership is so important, and we need it for our period of success. Also people with real leadership traits tend to improve and keep improving. The research on genius has found that you need innate talent, but beyond that it is hard work and the ability to learn. That is the only reason I am going for Vlas.
Still want Grundy though - but that sounds unlikely.
