I think the biggest reality is our need for leg speed.
No it's not. We are a great running side. Off the back half, Morris, Houli and Newman are all fast, and in the midfield Deledio, Martin, Cotchin, Edwards and Foley are all exceptionally fast players. Yes, we do not have a player of elite pace such as Jetta, Rioli, etc but that is a luxury, not a need.

What we need is an inside midfielder.

I've spoken to TV about this - but I reckon that Wines is a tad overhyped on here. He's a talented footballer and a tremendous kid but I don't think he has the same potential to be elite as a few in this draft pool, and I think his kicking isn't much more than serviceable.
Who are the guys you see as potentially becoming elite?

Reality is we need inside mids and outside mids.

Take the most talented mid at pick 9.

Whitfield
Toumpas
Viney
O'Rourke
Mayes
Menzel
Wines
Garlett
Vlastuin

imo are all better than Kennedy
Also Wines/Vlastuin from what I've seen can play inside/outside where as Kennedy is purely outside (all be it a very good one). I would have no problem with us taking him as a second pick......but this won't happen

I agree with the gist of your argument but I wouldn't describe Morris, Newman, Martin or Cotchin as fast. They aren't slow by any stretch of the imagination but I still wouldn't call them fast. Axel's appears to have lost a yard or two with the injuries as well.

First round ruckmen in the past 10 years I think have worked all right - Longer, Gorringe, Day, Naitanui, Vickery, Cordy, Kreuzer, McEvoy, Lobbe, Leuenberger,Ryder, Mitch Clark, Max Bailey, McIntosh and Minson.

The only duds in the past 10 years have been Sellar, Meeson, Pattison and Laycock.

I think if the ruck is good enough to be a first rounder and you need one you cannot afford to overlook a ruck in the hope a later pick works out. KPP's are worth their weight in gold.
Gee wiz nicko, hardly a compelling argument my friend...most of them have done nothing more than a pick 60 something, therin underlining my point , dont squander first rounders on ruckman

Whitfield
Grundy
Plowman
Mayes
Toumpas
Simpson
Garlett
Stringer
Daniher
Kennedy
Menzel
MacRae

There's a few names off the top of my head.

Can't disagree on any of them. Though I haven't probably seen a huge amount of Plowman.

Of that lot, only Morris is express.

Agreed that we need a HFF who comes into the midfield rotation with serious pace, and another quick in/out midfielder (Cotchin pace will suffice)

Now that would be a sight to behold

edit for some reason read it as Cotchin with pace.

Huh? No he's not

and how do you know this exactly?

Our lack of inside midfielders got shown up last year. It's a shame as I see us using our pick on a ready to go ball winner. Curse Wallace leaving the cupboard bare as this might be the highest pick we get in a while and a little outside class would be great, but our lack of quality depth might see us take a solid citizen rather try our luck with a little flare. Hard to argue against the safe option with our current needs but it would be good to a Wells or Bennell type in our team.

Thank heavens for that , investing a first r selection in a 174cm player would be sooooooo wrong

Rioli, of the Maurice variety, was only 175cm.... Cyril's probably smaller. Nothing wrong with players of this height so long as they can play... and from what I'm hearing Kennedy's got plenty of ability.

Plowman is an exquisitely skilled, dashing and composed Rance, for mine.

I do like Plowman but is he really worth a pick under 20 , Not overly tall 191cm and a defender usually between 20-40 range
wouldnt mind him with 1 of our 2nd or compo picks but not with #9,

But he is sept 1994 dob so might still get to 193-194, If he was 195-197 that would be ideal.

Guys who are only 175 tall may be ok provided they are surrounded by taller strong players, problem is we are not a big or strong side. Go and get some size because thats what you need it is September.

Speed is a much about precise ball skills as it is running pace. I wouldn't say Geelong has been the swiftest team across the ground over the years, but they can look very fast because of their ability to hit targets etc

Of course, great to have both

Understand what your saying but Geelong made a concerted effort to get Varcoe into their team for that something different. You only need one. Geelong look way more dangerous when Varcoe is in their line up. As do Hawthorn with Cyril and Swans with Jetta.

Ball movement is fine, but when you have someone that scares the living hell out of teams out the back or on the spread, you can attack other avenues also. One player like that. That is all that is needed.

Garlett is that type and he is NOT a bad character at all. That is false and a lie. He made some mistakes but has grown up and got himself sorted. He also wants to move away from WA for football reasons. This is a kid with a good head on his shoulders. These types don't come around too often. We missed out on Varcoe, let's not do the same with Garlett.
