Gee wiz nicko, hardly a compelling argument my friend...most of them have done nothing more than a pick 60 something, therin underlining my point , dont squander first rounders on ruckman

I look at it quite a differet way. I would be quite happy with any of Naitanui, Kreuzer, McEvoy, Leuenberger, Ryder, Mitch Clark, Max Bailey or McIntosh on our list. We have Vickery but I agree with some others that he is a forward, not a ruck. The only ones I haven't included in the list above are the few drafted in the past two seasons plus Lobbe and Minson. Can you tell me which ones above didn't turn out as value at a first rounder? Maybe Bailey and McIntosh but injury rather than skill has held them back.

I still reckon KPP's are worth their weight in gold. If we had the option of a ruck or an equally skilled small player I would take the ruck every day of the week. They don't grow on trees. You could get lucky and get a Cox or Goldstien later in the draft or you could be unlucky and end up with a Andrew Browne, Tom Derrickx or Angus Graham.

I'm sure everyone would be happy with Kreuzer, but, I'm sure a lot more are happy with Cotchin.

Point is, you don't take 200CM Rucks with first round picks, unless of course they are absolute standouts such as Naitanui.

I was going to say just that about Kreuzer and Cotchin but it wasn't the point I didn't think. I agree with what you say about not taking blokes unless they are standouts with first rounders but that goes for any player. Ryder is about the only bloke above that goes in and out of games but even so still leads the line in the ruck. Are any of the above not standouts?

I guess at the end of the day we all have different opinions. I do agree not to draft speculatively in the first round but not to take a midfielder over a ruck.

I'd definitely support that selection (Garlett) if made.

I wasn't having a go at you and your suggestion. I just wanted to point out that most great sides have that player who can change things at a drop of a hat.

I also wanted to rid the myth that Garlett was a bad character. He is definitely not. I think he would pass our character testing quite easily, although I have heard and most here have said Vlastuin is what Frank wants. While I won't be upset at that selection, I just feel we should go a different way. How many more one paced players do we want to recruit?

Without a great deal of knowledge about these kids, I just feel that we would be reaching for Vlastuin, seems to be generally rated at aroung the pick 15 range

I remember discussions with some people at a club and he was actually one of the most talked about kids at the start of the year and a definite top 5 pick. He has had a foot injury I think this season which hampered his Championship therefore has dropped significantly in some rankings. He is still around the 8-15 range and wouldn't be a reach. He is probably the strongest leader potential out of any kid, good solid kid who will give it his all.

So no, I don't think he would be a reach.

My argument on why I would prefer Garlett is simply, I think he has the potential to be a top 5 player in this draft and change us in a positive way like no other player in the draft could.

I would understand the selection of Vlas, but prefer Garlett.

Look at the plus side. Jackson might finally get the flick if we're bringing in a quality inside mid.

There is a possibility we could do a trade that involves a first round pick downgrade. Not sure how likely it is, and would be a risky move, but something like trading pick 9 to a side like the Kangaroos for their first two picks (14 + 35), or Freo (15 + 36). Either option gives us 4 picks in the top ~35. 13 + 26 from the Dee's would be super :thumbsu:

If he is the kid we have decided we want to take, we should be looking to trade with melbourne imo
pick #9 + pick #31 for Pick #13 + pick #26

Minimal gain for high risk. What if Vlastuin and or our next want is gone by then? All for a few higher places in the second round?

Not for me.

If we truly believe the player we are getting is the one that will take us forward then select him at Pick 9.

Yeah agreed. Don't like us playing funny buggars hoping the one we want will still be available. Unless we truly are torn and have 2-3 options that we will be happy with any of them. I'd rather use our first pick and move our later picks around.

Read a few phantom drafts today to get feel for what could be available at pick 9 for us . Wines looks like a dusty clone on highlights video hopefully he is still there at 9 but i doubt it, Stringer and Garlett are the interesting ones to me both are top 5 talents with issues garlett`s are attitude though he seems to have overcome them and stringer`s are injury broken leg last year , both have X factor and are a risk, but it might be one worth taking this year . Both could slide to us and have huge upside Garlett is likened to Harley Bennell an outside left foot mid who also wins his own ball , Stringer is likened to Luke Hodge, a tough utility who can play anywhere. As I said might just be risk worth taking!

The best Rucks going around at the moment are blokes taken with late picks in the ND or rookie picks (Nic Nat obvious stand out), heck we got Maric with pick 37(?) in a highly diluted draft, Adelaide picked up Jacobs for a bag of chips.

dont need inside mids guys we need Chf who can play wing ... like Darling

this obsession with mids on this board is weird .. were not carlton guys

Found this article on Vlastuin. He is the player I want with our first pick, and has been since the start of the year when Knightmare had him going top 2.

I've been calling for Vlastuin since the mini-draft candidates came out. Me Guru.

What if Vlastuin's always wanted to come to Richmond and has just been tanking it up this year so he could be available at our pick. Conspiracy! I like it.
