Agree but he does have class and a touch of brilliance about him.Garlett doesn't have Rioli's pace.
Totally agree. This mentality means that you pick up Pavlich instead of Fiora even though you already have Richo
The club seems to also be putting a strong emphasis on character in their ranking of players. Garlett's had some off-field issues, albeit they were reasonably minor, but I wouldn't be surprised if this meant they went for an arguably less talented player, but one who is a "model citizen", with good leadership skills etc. That would be the one exception to your "take the best talent first" motto. What I am saying, is the player who has the best talent you take first. Not hard logic is it?

I can't even remember what the "issue" was with Garlett now, but understand it's nothing too serious.Definitely. But there is something wrong with that too in my opinion.
If they are Troy Taylor or Dan Connors bad, yeah maybe avoid. Garlett wasn't and isn't even close to that. Blown way out of proportion.

I think the club is being conservative because unlike the Swans (and other's) we need to make every one count. Garlett may not be in this boat, but if there's any chance of a player being a Connors/Taylor/Jurrah, then we're not in the position yet to take that gamble in the hope they could be our Jetta/Rioli/Buddy.
So I guess with all that said, I'm not talking about Garlett, nor a skillful outside mid in the general sense, but the issue of assessing the character of any player we're looking at drafting. We need to do everything we can to ensure we're bringing in guys who are every chance of playing 200+ games for RFC... that won't come down to an assessment of talent alone, but of talent, combined with character, work ethic, leadership skills etc. If Garlett is deemed to be the best balance of these qualities when our pick comes up, then I'd hope we'd be snapping him up.
Bloody close to it. He is a jet. In fact without knowing the stats, I am going to highly doubt your statement. Seen Garlett rip up the turf like no one else. Jetta the quickest I have seen but Garlett comes close.
I went tonight, watched the game closely. The likes of Mitchell was great in close, but in a close game, that class and zip and x factor that can swing a game did. Rioli was amazing, as was Jetta last night. Garlett in the yellow and black gives me goosebumps. Don't need to look at the stats for that game, because if your a stat watcher you miss these guys game and the importance of it. Momentum shifters they are. Very hard to do. They both do it. These types do it.
I totally understand the need for an inside midfielder. Totally get your argument. But I simply rate Garlett that high, and your argument to me means we will be taking a player I rate less. I won't change my opinion. On needs, I think both are needed, inside grunt on baller and x factor outside skilled player. So to me, whatever is best you take.
If we are on the MCG next September, the expectancy when it goes forward to have someone who has that pace and can do anything will be amazing. Cotch, Deledio, Martin, Foley, Tuck will drive us, a guy like Garlett can turn it into gold.
I completely understand where you are coming from. Mate, I want Garlett to play for us next year. The thing is that inside-midfielders won it for Sydney, not Jetta. The recipe for success is 2/3 inside midfielders, tackles and contested possessions. What you suggest is that we trade for inside-midfielders, well we are trying to do that with Thomas, but look at all the negativity towards that. Honestly, 1/10 posters on the Matt Thomas Thread actually want him and the chances than he will turn into a Josh Kennedy or a Sam Mitchell are quite slim.
Garlett would not be able to thrive if we can't get the ball out to him. The thing with Jetta is that if you put him in a team like Melbourne, he would struggle. Cyril is a bit of a different situation as he has a pretty decent inside game. Not that I am saying that Garlett doesn't or won't be able to develop an inside game, but he certainly hasn't shown it.
Totally agree. This mentality means that you pick up Pavlich instead of Fiora even though you already have Richo. First 2 or 3 picks should always be BPA. After that try to fill holes with trades, Rookie Draft, PSD and late picks. If you end up with a excess of good players in a certain position then you have more trade bait to improve further.
For what it's worth, Freo rated Fiora ahead of Pav too
Definitely. But there is something wrong with that too in my opinion.

Look, it probably cost us Buddy the most exciting player in the league a policy like that. Cost most Darling two years ago. Maybe three years ago we weren't equipped to handle the type. We are now. We have a great playing culture. Plus as I said, Garlett isn't trouble like most on here make him out to be.
I think the club have a policy, but that kind of policy can become stale and cost you the ultimate. We are very vanilla. Do we need more vanilla types? Don't get me wrong I like the types and they are good footballers, but is the time now to add that spark? Sydney did it with Jetta. They were the most vanilla team going around. Kinnear Beatson went there and went bang. Gary Rohan, Lewis Jetta and Byron Sumner (remember the name, will get drafted again) in the one draft. He is up there with the best recruiters and he understood what was missing.
My opinion, and again I stress it's just my opinion, I think it is high time we do the same. MCG, under lights, massive crowd, game needs a spark. We need that type.
Josh Simpson second round? Bit inconsistent at this stage but can do some magical things. He just hasn't put it all together as expected this year and could slide. Shannon Taylor is another I'd look at as is Dom Barry late ND/Rookie.
its well known buddy psych test was ordinary and i think the champs was crap as well.
Josh Simpson make it to pick 29? Doubtful. If he does, snap him up. Agreed. I just don't see it happening.
Shannon Taylor as a rookie, yes. Couple of NT boys Anothony Tipungwuti and Jake Neade would be great late gets.
Tipungwuti plays for Gippsland, so it's not as though he will have the whole miss home, adjust to city problems. He is a utility can play anywhere, I like him as a forward though. He is extremely talented, just needs to take the finger out. It will certainly be interesting to see if he's a big-game player tomorrow at tomorrow's GF.
Exactly. Yet here we are. Hawthorn took the risk and it has more than paid off. Fortune favours the brave. Where have I seen that before?
He's one I will be very looking forward to watching tomorrow. Good post, spot on! Like Rioli, knows what living away from the top end is all about. I too like him as a forward. Hope he does well.
I'm afraid that if we had taken Franklin ahead of Tambling, we would not have been able to develop him to the same extent that Hawthorn were able to. There were some huge off-field problems which were rumored with Franklin at the time and there are still whispers that they are still occurring today.
I am more interested in Macrae, Membrey, Graham, Kearns and Billings. All widely tipped to go around our picks. (Other than Billings who I believe will just be short of reach next year.)
Spot on. Someone earlier in the thread was keen for a pick down grade, GC would be the best option( I'm against it by the way). If they pick up a mid first round pick we could trade pick 9 for say pick 13+ and their second round pick. That way they get a better player with their limited spots and we get another second rounder and still probably get a Vlastuin type.
) there could be a players with known issues such as Stringer/Gartlett available outside the top 10 or if the clubs before us decide they're worth the risk of a top 10 pick a Vlastuin/Wines available. (Especially if there are two top 10 F/S)
