After reading the Stringer article I started to think the same about Stringer going to the Dogs. Sounds like they are into him which could be good for us.

1. Whitfield
2. Grundy
3. Toumpas
4. Wines
5. Stringer

So could leave us one of O'Rourke, Mayes, Plowman, Macrea to choose from and potentially two if Brisbane go for Jaksc. Things are starting to look good! Would be more than happy with any of those players.

GWS might take O'Rourke instead of Toumpas otherwise Doggies likely. There was talk Port goes Membrey but I'd imagine they'll take Mayes if there. Lions want one of O'Rourke/Plowman. Would leave us Macrae at the least plus Mayes if Port goes Membrey instead.

Would love Mayes or Macrea. Haven't really considered Mayes before as I didn't think he'd get to us. Would love him in our side to improve our delivery inside 50 - obviously a real need for improvement in this area for us. Will make Ty and JR better players having guys like Mayes in the side. Macrea would also be really handy. Will not get a tag playing for us with Cotch, Lids and Dusty infront of him - could get off the leash as an attacking mid.

Surely there is no way that Port takes Membrey. Highlights look to one dimensional for me and that's his highlights. A mid first rounder to early second rounder to me by the looks of it. Still wouldn't mind being wrong on that one.

Yer I'd imagine Mayes would go to Port if available. Maybe Membrey the back up plan?

TBH I wouldn't be against Garner at 9. Been watching a bit of him today now that it seems we are keen. I think he offers something we lack up forward and he can also play through the midfield. Has a good inside game. In fact I'd go close to taking him over Macrae who I think SHOULD be gone.

Been doing a little bit of viewing on some other as well and for me Garner really fits our side even at 9.

9. Taylor Garner - 186 cm 77kg Forward/Midfielder. Has a bit of Nat Fyfe about him. Tall, skinny mercurial forward who can take a big hanger. Strong in the air and probably has better skills than Fyfe. The thing that stands out for me with Garner is his inside game is quite good so he can play midfield as well. So he has versatility.

Wishful thinking: Jackson Macrae. Should go a little before our pick but you never know. Range 5-10.

32. Nathan Hrovat - 176cm 80kg Midfielder. We need one pure midfielder from this draft and I'd be hoping for Lonergan as a first choice but Hrovat would be more likely to last due to his size. Really good contested player, wins a lot of the ball. Has very good skills off either side. People will question whether he lasts this long but I think his size and lack of blistering speed at this size may see him last to us. He's the most immediate player of the ones I'd choose for us. Very much like a small Sam Mitchell. Not flashy but gets the job done.

Wishful thinking: Jesse Lonergan. Really big bodied contested winning king. Skills have really improved this year so think he could go higher than this. Possibly first round. Range 15-35.

34. Rory Atkins - 186cm 80kg Midfielder/Forward. Atkins for me is a kid with big upside. Has really been one of the big sliders this year after being dumped from the AIS after an average year. He's grown 3cm this year and put on a bit of weight. Really nice skill set and is another versatile player. Moves well, even though he didn't test well he looks to move quick. Needs to build a tank but I feel he is getting there. Like Garner, Atkins has the ability to impact the scoreboard from HF/Midfield. Think he could be groomed into a Chris Knights type of player with his long left foot kicking and goal kicking ability as a HF and ability to find a bit of the ball in the middle. Hopefully minus the injuries though.

Wishful thinking: Tim Broomhead. Could play as that HFF rotating into the midfield like Atkins. With Port picking twice before us I think he will go there at the latest. Range 20-30.

43. Tim Sumner - 187cm 80kg Forward/Midfielder. Rangy forward who can push up anywhere else on the ground. Fantastic speed and I see him being what Troy Taylor didn't become. Has better skills than Taylor for mine. Can take a huge hanger, burn off players with his speed and really hit the scoreboard hard, evidenced by his 8 goal game in SANFL colts.

Don't really have a wishful thinking pick here as the one I really want the more I watch is very likely to be there. If he's gone I'd consider Marvin Warrell from South Freo but with his beep test he may be there for our rookie pick.

Just out of interest mate where are you watching the Garner stuff. Havent seen anything online

I'm really starting to get excited about the prospect of Mayes being available at our pick. If the whispers are true the draft may end up like this.

1) Whitfield
2) Grundy
3) Toumpas
4) Wines
5) O'Rourke
6) Stringer
7) Menzel/Macrae/Plowman
8) Shaw/Plowman/Jaksch
9) Mayes

The biggest positive about Mayes is his kicking and kicking skills are one of our three pillars of recruitment. He is the best kick in the draft and I liken his fluid style to Deledio. He competes really well, which is the second pillar of our recruiting philosophy. I sure hope he interviewed well though, as the psych test is our third pillar.

When you put it like that, it does look possible. I had kind of wiped the idea from my head, assuming he would never get past Port at 7, but if they go for one of the 3 you mentioned... Who knows. Very exciting. Mayes will be an absolute gun IMO.

You could see Port going for someone like Plowman. I mean Blee and Carlisle are absolutely rubbish. Especially now as we have stolen Chaplin, they desperately need a KPD. Even Menzel, who on talent alone is probably on par or even better than Mayes.

The fact they traded in Hombsch might knock the Plowman idea on the head though. Guess it comes down to who their internal ratings, we can only hope!

True, but you'd think they'd be a little less desperate for another KPD now. Though I suppose Plowman is more your rebounding defender type. Like I said, we can only hope teams with picks before us rate others higher than they rate Mayes.

Aside from that discussion, I don't think we'll take midfielders with all of our early picks. Ellis was recruited as a midfielder, but the Hardwick regime has the kids in the backline for a few years until they learn how to be defensive. Our midfield depth then begins to look like this.

Cotchin
Martin
Deledio
Foley
Conca
Tuck
Jackson
Ellis
Grigg
Helbig
---------
White
Arnot

We still need around 2 midfielders to cap that off. Let's say we don't change our picks after this week and we have 9, 32, 34 and 43. We use 9 and 32 on best available midfielder unless there is a non-mid too good to pass on, and use 34 and 43 to draft some players who'll fill in gaps, like a HFF, FB or ruckman.

I really could see us taking someone like Colquhoun or Broomhead. Both can be stuck on the HBF and free-up Newman/Ellis or even Morris to have freedom in the midfield.

Talking about fluidity in kicking action how do you see Macrae's kicking action. Theres something in it that I dont particularly like. I have raised this numerous times but no one really wants to answer. I like Macrae but I think there are better prospects out there. If we get Mayes we should all buy tattslotto tickets.

Yeah I can't see Mayes getting past Port. Go home factor with kids will have rocked them a little bit and reckon they will go the safe bet with Mayes.

Kicking technique doesn't matter as long as he can hit his target. Neither Cotchin or Ablett have a great kicking technique yet doesn't effect them. All a kicking technique does is make you look more classy as a player.

I'd say Cotch and GAJ have great kicking techniques and often tell kids to watch them kick.

Colquhoun and Broomhead are 2 of my faves actually, just good all round players. Broomhead probably has more midfield potential than Colquhoun from what I've seen, but Colquhoun has a stunningly good kick on him.

I'm really starting to warm to Atkins too. He and Hrovat could prove to be the bargains of this draft.
