Yeah agree, unfortunately not too many Cotchins around lol. I have faith Conca and Helbig and also Martin will help in this area but no doubt we need some more. This can come at pick 9 or at pick 30 odd, just need to analyse the players we want.

AFL Prospectus has us as the 8th ranked midfield going into next year. We have to be better than that. We need more depth. We need more class. We should get that this draft.

yeah agree. i think this is our midfield draft for the future with subsequent drafts for specific needs. i guess we have to way up inside talent for outside talent.

FYI, Inside Footy draft guy thinks Grundy will go to Port at 7. Must be a surprise or 2 before then

His favourite player in the draft is Clurey

Thinks Vlastuin does not warrant 9.

I tend to agree , think he'll end up proving to be a very very good player , likely to be higher than where he is taken and doesn't appear to be ranked by some .

Yeah he believes that the growing mentality of trading for Rucks when the time is right will domintate the league in the years to come and that sees Grundy slide down the list.

It's mind boggling that a team like GWS who have mids coming out their arses and 5 picks in the first round that they would not pick the best tall of the draft and IMO the best Ruck to come through since Nic Nat.

Brett Anderson also thinks Grundy is a chance to fall to us. With the Dees set on Wines, Bulldogs abundance of talls and Brisbane spent their first pick on a Ruck last year. So that basically leaves Port who traded for Renouf last offseason and have Lobbe still in waiting they may feel the pressure to boost their midfield.

He said we have shown a lot of interest in Grundy, Macrea and rates Garner as a top 10 prospect.

I reckon Footscray will pick up Grundy...they cannot be happy with Will Minton as 1st ruck...
They need midfield depth. Plenty of big blokes. No way Grundy gets to us. Port pick him at the absolute latest but still reckon GWS will snap him up.

Pretty much spot on. Vlastuin's past performances before the niggles warrants him as a borderline top ten though. But yeah for me he was early to mid teens before I studied some history tapes on him. Also reading about his character etc, certainly rises him higher. Can play the kid, would not be upset if he is taken at 9.

Clurey is at number 11 for me. He was in my top 10 all year as previous stated in the Phantom Draft. The best tall defender (Ploman is a versatile mid for mine).

Port will take Menzel, Membrey or Mayes. If what is true, we will have a chance for Grundy. I like Toadvine, cannot imagine GWS not taking him. The best rickman by a mile, will be the long term guy with that midfield. They would be silly not to. I did hear they will trump Melbourne for Wines because Melbourne have made it so obvious who they are taking. We will see.

I am 99% sure, Unless Toumpas falls, O'Rourke and Stringer will find themselves at the Bulldogs.

From what I heard, the draft looks like this:

1. Whitfield
2. Toumpas
3. Grundy
4. Wines
5. O'Rourke
6. Stringer
7. Menzel/Membrey
8. Plowman/Mayes
9. Macrae/Vlastuin/Garner/Plowman
10. Daniher

That, at this early stage, is what I am expecting.

Membrey at 7. Wow, that would be a shock. I've heard the rest, but I know that the Lions were still keen on a KPF, even though they took Martin. Source at the Dees have said that they reckon Toumpas will be available at 4. He didn't tell me who GWS would take though.

Yeah would shock me too, but whispers are getting louder they want him bad. I think in the end they won't, should go local.

So, no Grundy or Toumpas? Have GWS lost the plot? I know Whitfield is already there and been at the club etc, but surely Toumpas would go number two? If he falls out of the top 3 and Melbourne ignore him, I will laugh. Even Harder than I am now at them.

Yeah heard Brisbane wanting a KPF, but I think there will be too many gun's to consider a Shaw or whomever. Plowman would be perfect for them, or Mayes.

This draft is a cracker, so even.

I'm thinking about it now. Have a look at Port's KPP depth.

Key Backmen: Carlile, Trengove, Hombsch and Blee.

Key Forwards: Shultz, Butcher, Stewart, Salter (Arguable Westhoff, but more a HFF, wing)

They DESPERATELY need KPPs. I wouldn't be surprised to see them take 3 KPPs with their first picks. If Shultz goes down with injury, they are relying on 3 kids who would have played a combined total of a massive 68 games. Simillar with their defense, Hombsch and Blee together have had less AFL experience than Brandon Ellis.

Plowman/Membrey does seem like a realistic chance. Membrey would provide immediate benefit to Port.

Their midfield is pretty good. They've got Ebert, Hartlett, Boak, Broadbent, Wingard, Gray and Jacobs. They also have the experience in Cornes and Cassisi. It makes sense that they'd go after a KPP.

Yeah they are light on. I remember hearing somewhere, could of been from a personal conversation I can't remember, they will take guys that want to play for Port Adelaide. I think interviews will play a major role for them. They will flat out ask the kid, do you want to play for Port Adelaide. They are sick of the go home factor etc. They want elite kicks and good characters.

Membrey seems to me a good fit, although a bit early.

If they are sick of the go home factor how is membrey a good fit? Surely they would lock in Mayes, menzel or Grundy if he slides. Given the choice who apart from a local or someone looking for opportunity would want to go to port at the moment. Maybe when they've moved to Adelaide oval but at the moment they are a basket case.

Anyone know if Jacobs is likely to enter the ND? If so, should we look at him with 34?

High character guy, have heard he has stated he would be happy to play for anyone. Leader, tough as they come, mentally strong.

Sorry should have stated that.

:D

Oh another factor, Melbourne won't recruit anymore skinny runts. Wines is perfect for them, even though I don't think he is the fourth best player. Nathan Jones, Viney and Wines. Three bulls in the middle, lack class and polish. At least they will be hard to play against. Will compete. Just have to burn them with skill and class.

Look forward to trading pick 88 for Wines in 2017.

ok, enough Melbourne pot shots from me. :D

Cheers tb. Good reasons. When spending a first round pick think its pretty important to get someone with those qualities. One reason I'm keen on Vlastuin. If it wasn't for the fact that we have jr, ty, griff, Elton and Astbury already i wouldn't mind him on our list either.

haha is that what a driver of a rickshore is called???

We've spoken alot about our first pick but I am curious about our next 3 picks. Who are we looking at? We should be able to get some half decent guys.

I find this intriguing as well. Some names that have been thrown around:

Rory Atkins
Sam Lowrie
Jason Pongracic
Tim Sumner
Tim Broomhead
Dean Towers
Marvin Warrell
Spencer White
Nathan Hrovat (longshot)
Sam Colquhoun (also longshot)
Matthew Haynes
Nathan Wright

Off the top of my head. Knowing FJ we'll pick none of those

Yeah agree id be intrigued about these later selections however its just impossible to know where they will go. Think the first pick is a lot easier to predict.

Who do you think the 5 & 6 are? Macrae and Plowman?

FWIW he has Mayes at 11 and Stringer in the 20's with Garlett at 25.

I really hope we take Atkins at 34. Bombers want him BADLY at 35. :D

Have you got his order? I've pieced together a bit of it.
Whitfield, Toumpas, O'Rourke, Wines, ??, ??, Grundy, ??, ??, Daniher, Mayes.

Hanging out for Emma Quayles mock draft. She is usually fairly on the ball with whos going where early. Stringer will go 6 by the sounds of it with the Doggies hell keen on him and i still cant see Grundy going later than 3. GWS have the time to develop him.
