I would hope this is only the case if none of Mayes/Macrae/O'Rourke slip to 9. A back up plan so to speak. I wouldn't be unhappy with Vlastuin, but I'm not sold on Garner

Same, definately not sold on Garner with our first pick and would be disappointed if we took him at 9.

How I see the first round unfolding.

1. Whitfield - simply the best kid in the draft.
2. Toumpas - second best midfielder on the board and adds another future star to the Giants midfield brigade.
3. Grundy - GWS have Giles Phillips & Downie as their current rucks which means they would be nuts if they overlook the best ruck in this draft. Alongside Giles would give the Giants a very good 1-2 punch in the ruck for years to come.
4. Stringer - Reckon the Dees will go with the kid who has the most X factor. Stringer could be anything and the Dees IMO need someone like him to get the fans excited. With Viney coming in the second round they can afford to take a gamble on this kid coming good as all reports are that he will be fine in regards the leg.
5 & 6. Mayes and Macrae - Dogs are well stocked for inside midfielders with Wallis Libba Smith & Stevens. What they do need though is class outside types to help Griffen, Mayes and Macrae do that and will give the Dogs some real outside pace and skill in the years to come.
7. Menzel - The best of the home grown talent available for Port and I reckon they take him here. Some might say its a reach but based on what others say about his talent I don't think so.
8. Wines - Lions have a pretty good midfield group but with Black getting near the end Wines seems like a likely replacement in 12 months. What better way to learn the business than to go and learn from Black.
9. O'Rourke - some might raise eyebrows at this based on my post yesterday saying I want Vlastuin, but if O'Rourke is there I see us taking him. Would give us another inside/outside midfield option.
10. Daniher - well derrr.
11. Jaksch - Waite is 30 and not capable of playing a full season. Outside that they have Casboult and Mitchell as KPF. Jaksch brings in another young tall for them to develop and is capable of playing either end.
12. Plowman - Giants are well stocked for midfielders but IMO are lacking KPP options. Plowman gives them another one to go with Davis Tomlinson & Mohr as KPD. Bonus is he should be able to play as a 3rd tall rebounding defender from next year.
13. Garner - Can play as a lead up forward initially but can also go through the midfield in years to come and seems like a perfect fit for the Suns.
14. Clurey - As I mentioned at their last pick the Giants seem light on for KPPs and Clurey would be another handy addition for them.
15. Garlett - the Roos have plenty of blue collar midfielders but outside Wells, seem to lack that outside line breaker who can open games up. Garlett gives them that.
16. Vlastuin - Corey & Bartel are getting on and with Caddy already added Vlastuin would give the Cats another ready made replacement to turn to in 1-3 years.
17. Shaw - With most of their KPPs getting on in age the Dockers need a KPF for the future and Shaw gives them that.
18 & 19. Kennedy and Graham - With the first 2 of 3 first round picks I see the Pies looking to add to the young midfield talent they already have. Kennedy gives them a line breaking speed machine they seem to lack and Graham just adds overall class.
20*. Colquhoun - Assuming the Crows keep this pick I see them going home grown talent. This kid will slot into the backline for the Crows eventually and will be their go to guy with his kicking skills.
21. Wright - A defender who can push into the midfield, as such he can play lock down roles and I think the Pies need someone like this as they just don't seem to have anyone who can do this type job.
22. Smith - Dogs need KPPs IMO and Smith comes across as a good one based on the write ups. With the Dogs heavy into rebuild mode taking a young KPD like Smith isn't going to hurt them as it will give them time to develop him up.
23. Lonergan - Sydney seem to love their inside ball winners and this kid just comes across as a perfect replacement for Bolton in the next 12-24 months.

Now before people get stuck into me, keep in mind that I'm not a draft watcher and these opinions are based on large amounts of reading profiles and getting an idea of what players maybe like. I realise not everyone will agree with this and I welcome criticism as long as its constructive.

Any really quick small forwards that are worth taking?

Rather just keep drafting skillful mids than targeting specialist smalls. Mids come in all different sizes and can pretty much play anywhere. Can never have too many.

Reckon Gartlett's worth the punt at pick 9. Seems to me we're still spooked by past errors -with good reason, mind you- and need to get over it at some point, because we're going to badly need a player of his type sooner or later, preferably sooner.

...and yes richmond_14, I meant to write "way" not "well" in my last post.

North are into Membrey. There was only two clubs that didn't interview him.

FWIW can't see any chance that GWS will let go of Grundy let alone him sliding to 9.
Way i see it one of Mayes, Stringer, O'Rourke, Macrae will be there at our pick
1-5 Whitfield, Toumpas, Grundy, Wines, Plowman (Think the doggies will take him)
6-9 Mayes, Stringer, O'Rourke, Macrae
Garner, Garlett, Vlastuin will all be there
Would be happy with any of them

Still really really want Hrovat at 32

Very happy to take any 1 of the bolded players at #9

Just a few comments revolving around the doggies picks, i see the taking plowman at 5 or 6 for the same reasons you identified. I think he can end up being a tall mid and give that outside run you were talking about, while also having the versability to play tall, if we were after an outside mid rather then an inside one i'd love him at 9.
Also with Macrae i see him long term developing into an inside mid, i think comparisons with pendlebury that have been thrown around are not too far off the mark. While no doubt he will start off on the outside i think long term he will be an inside mid so not sure he fills a need at the doggies with their inside depth. So all in all i see them taking plowman over macrae, thats just my opinion though!
Good read though think you won't be too far off

Wow Plowman @ #12 would be just about impossible i think R/T
Having spent a fair bit of time reading different write ups, I went with who I consider best available at each pick while also trying to tie in with what I believe clubs would look for if there was a couple that could be taken. For example I considered him at Ports pick but after looking at their list they seem pretty well off for KPDs after trading in a couple. So while they may take him I believe they would be more inclined to bolster their midfield group which Menzel does.

Was tossing up with Macrae especially because of the Pendlebury comparisons, the thing is that Pendlebury can be quite damaging on the outside as well and I think at the Dogs, with the young group of inside mids they have, Macrae could really flourish on the outside where his kicking skills could be better utilised rather than trying to use them while breaking out of packs.

Can't argue with that

Tippett @ 8 would make for some interesting fallout

I would personally crack up if Port took him

Would be amazing.

Tippett will go in the PSD I assume, put $1million on his head and still get to Sydney. Shame that he will still prosper from this while the fans of a club will suffer for years from this as Adelaide's punishment from this will be massive.

Yeah I know they will be punished. But money isn't an issue and they were a goal away from making a GF.
If they are excluded from the first 2 rounds of the draft this year and next, I don't see those sanctions being terminal as they were for Carlton, who was pathetic when the penalties were imposed.

They have plenty of young talent and will go ok.

No doubt, but an influx of good kids is always needed. I think they will be in a good position now, it eventually will catch up with them if they aren't smart about it.

It will also depend on how many infractions are placed on them. They can be involved in Free Agency? First two or three rounds of the draft? Trading players that want to leave? It's all unknown now anyway, and not our concern.

Your right, count Broomhead out. Port will take him most certainly if he is there. Bang on the money you are.

Well then, Graham and Pongracic would be a great midfield combo to obtain at those selections. Atkins in the mix too. I am sure Frank has a couple up his sleeve we haven't mentioned. As we have stated he loves his Dandenong Stingrays, so I expect Taylor Garner and Pongracic to come into calculations. Maybe another.

Will make our draft so different if Brodie Grundy is selected.

Shame about Broomhead. Is that a definite on Port or just your suspicion? Im only putting 2 & 2 together him being from SA and them wanting kids that won't go home.

We sure have a love for Dandenong lately. Getting out of Grundy fantasy land I could see a Garner/Pongracic combination. Atkins is one I've liked all year and I stopped talking about him for awhile but back to talking him up. I think of the guys touted for 2nd round I think he's one who could go past being a solid player and develop into something special if he can build his tank up. Another I've talked about a bit through the year is Tim Sumner. Really like what he has to offer. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he would be what Troy Taylor should have been if he wasn't a knob. Thoughts on Sumner?

Also, what position do you see Garner & Pongracic playing? Do you think they can both transition into being permanent mids?

After reading some write ups of possible later selections I would like to know if any draft watchers have seen any of these guys play and if you would want them to come to Richmond
Aiden CORR - KPD with excellent pace and an ability to play as both an attacking and shut down defender.
SUMNER - Sounds like he has X factor, good speed and nice height for a HFF
Any really quick small forwards that are worth taking?
Sumner is one I really like and could add that spark to the team with a later selection. He has that take em on attitude. Loves a run and bounce as well as a hanger. Kicked a rather impressive bag of 8 during the season. Is a really lovely kick of the footy.

TFLUA-Tiger could give you a better write up on Aiden Corr I believe. His attacking game and athleticism allows him to play off a wing as well as KPD. Likely type who'll probably go higher than what he's been touted on BF.

For a lad out of Glenelg you seem to know a fair bit about most Vic kids, great job. Your posts are appreciated.

Anyway, firstly on Sumner. Taller than his brother, same dash and zest. Seen him run the length of the field, my only concern is he is in and out of games far too often. I guess that's why he is talked about as a late second to third rounder. Good skills, great athleticism, and a turn of pace that impresses. I have faith in our development now to take this kid, would be happy to as early as 34 or our second second rounder.

Yes, noticed the trend last year about our Dandenong fetish. Could be just coincidence, but sometimes recruiters have close ties to staff at clubs and get special information. Seen it before. Not saying the recruiter is doing favours or anything, just knows more than other recruiters. Trusts the person getting information who acts as another recruiter for him. Could be what is happening, who knows? I would not complain about a Garner/Pongracic double capture.

I see Garner as a high half forward who goes into the middle full time as he develops. He has such an appetite for the contest and great awareness, all he needs is the tank and continuity in the midfield. The thing about Garner that I love is he has tricks. Can do things some can't. We talk about needed midfielders that can be versatile in todays game, well he adds to it. If he was one out up forward, opposition would be worried, has the Riewoldt ability to judge the fall of the ball in the air better than most. Very good at getting great front position and taking a grab.

Pongracic has a lot of Jordan Lewis about him. Relishes the physical contest, never takes his eye of the ball and will attack man and ball at high intensity. Another who is very dangerous forward. Again, needed in todays game. Imagine the options of these guys with Martin, Deledio and Cotchin going forward. Good grief! He has neat skills, seems to always make the right decision and take the right option and is efficient in his play. Cherishes the contest so we would love him. They breed them tough at Dandy! ;)

Haha I'm in Vic now. Still go back home a bit though so have an advantage to see both states sometimes. Just never changed my location on here.

Agree Sumner is very inconsistent, but can't see us getting Garlett/Simpson and I think this kid has their dash although hasn't put his game together yet. Our development as a whole has come along way and Choco has a good track record with the indigenous boys. Still has a long way to go but if he was close to the finished product then we wouldn't be getting him. To me is a boom or bust type player. We are due some luck after Troy Taylor. 34 seems about right as I could see him going earlier.

Tbh didn't rate Garner all that highly till I got my hands on the VC vs WA game. Absolutely love his aerial game but also his defensive side. Loves to tackle hard from what I've seen of him. Provided we take him, I hope your right and he can become a midfielder at the top level because he just adds more flexibility in the way we set up. With all our mids that can play medium forward we wouldn't need to waste a spot on a specialist and gives us an extra midfield rotation over other sides without losing the goal scoring power.

My only concern on Pongracic is whether he is just bullying kids that are half his size. Having said that, you would think his attack on the ball will hold him in good stead no matter what level.

For me right now I'd be happy with a result of:
9. Garner
32. Atkins
34. Sumner
43. Pongracic

Sumner/Pongracic probably need to be selected in this order as at a guess Sumner will be more highly sort after.
