In the past we have taken the likes of Ellis and Conca, both big bodied players but to me a tad slow. Ive seen Wines and Vlastuin. They are good players but they are also a tad slow IMHO. If we continue down this path of taking this type of player we will become very one paced. I would prefer someone like Kennedy, Simpson or Garlett myself. Kennedy is my first choice if Sam Mayes doesnt fall.

There is a chance that players like Wines or O'Rourke could slide to us especially if GWS land the first 3 picks in the draft following the mini-draft bidding. Word is that the Suns and Dees will trade their first picks to get the mini draft picks. This would give GWS first 3 and I could see them targetting needs rather than simply going best available. They could easily go Whitfield Grundy & a Plowman/Shaw option with the first 3 to ensure they fill holes with what they need to fill.

That would see everyone else drop down 1-2 spots and when you add in the usual bolter who climbs after the combine and we could be well in the market for a top line kid that no-one thinks we will get.

It is my concern also. I think we could become one paced too. Every team needs an absolute sizzler. Sydney with Jetta is far more dangerous. Hawthorn with Rioli.

Garlett is in that category. I have no doubt he can get to that level if developed right. What he brings to our team is unique and something we definitely lack. He is a midfielder, pure, but could also go forward and be a spark. All of a sudden you have Cotchin, Martin and Garlett rotating through midfield and forward lines.

Garlett as everyone will know by now, is the one I want. Think he takes us to a new level.

Guys, the only knock on Garlett is that he may have some attitude problems. So this may stop us from taking him. On talent, he is easily a top 5 pick.
so what im sick to death about not drafting players who have attitude, ( king martin jack vic ) all have it .i feel the need the need for speed, pick 9 garlett .

Garlett fans would be happy to hear he had 18 disposals (15 kicks) and 2 goals for Swan Districts in the WAFL Semi-final yesterday.

a couple of drafting GOLDEN rules that if the club adhered over the journey we may well be in a different place.

1. Dont draft ruckman with first rounder...probability suggests best ones are generally rookied
2. Dont draft players under 180cm with first rounder...aint too many Elite players of this stature...One player in whole league, aint good odds
3. Dont draft players that could ride in the Melb cup day hurdle (<70Kg), history shows these skinny runts never put any weight on

there you have it, call me crazy but this is just common sense ;)

First round ruckmen in the past 10 years I think have worked all right - Longer, Gorringe, Day, Naitanui, Vickery, Cordy, Kreuzer, McEvoy, Lobbe, Leuenberger,Ryder, Mitch Clark, Max Bailey, McIntosh and Minson.

The only duds in the past 10 years have been Sellar, Meeson, Pattison and Laycock.

I think if the ruck is good enough to be a first rounder and you need one you cannot afford to overlook a ruck in the hope a later pick works out. KPP's are worth their weight in gold.

Longer, not much on display
Gorringe, Zac Smith > Gorringe
Day, Patton/Cameron > Day (Day isn't a ruckman)
Cordy... sure..
Dafuq is Lobbe?

Ok, so if we remove those five you said haven't made the grade a #1's yet it is still 10 that have made it. Maybe I shouldn't have put Sellar on the 'duds' list as he is still on Melbourne's list but I don't really rate him. I won't shift the others down as they are all still on AFL lists and playing when available. With Gorringe and Smith I wasn't trying to compare who is better but more who will make it in the AFL. I feel all these players will make it. Sure, Smith (who incedently wasn't drafted.....would he have been another first rounder to back up my point???) is the better ruck but it really isn't the point.

Apologies for Day. I was going to put in Kepler Bradley (111 games) but he really isn't a ruck.

With Tuck likely to retire at the end of next year and an injury prone Foley I think our first pick must be for a genuine big body midfielder with very good foot skills e.g. Wines/Vlastuin. Conca/Ellis/Martin with our last 3 first round picks......don't see us changing this pattern.

Reality is we need inside mids and outside mids.

Take the most talented mid at pick 9.

I've spoken to TV about this - but I reckon that Wines is a tad overhyped on here. He's a talented footballer and a tremendous kid but I don't think he has the same potential to be elite as a few in this draft pool, and I think his kicking isn't much more than serviceable.
