Port are making a habit of this.

From what I am hearing, I would be surprised if they actually take him. I have been hearing Menzel, Mayes or Membrey all along.

This is early news, comes from club intelligence(won't reveal which club), so it is rock solid, but again, things change and there is still a month to go, almost. I actually think if GWS don't take Grundy, he will be ours if we want him.

TB, when I spoke to one of the recruiters at Richmond, I asked him if we'd take a need or best available at 9. He immediately answered that we'd take the best available midfielder, forward, defender (pause, then smiled) ... or ruckman. Grundy will be ours if he's available, and it would be marked down as the best off-season for the Tigers in a very long time.

I heard late two weeks ago at a function that we were keen and confident. I paid little to it then as things tend to come out and blow away soon after. Either someone else heard and the rumour spread, or it is serious and what I heard was justified.

I am guessing we will find out soon enough.

I'm still not going to be getting overly confident Grundy will slip to us. Still reckon best available is usually the first instinct of most clubs and on the day that instinct will kick in with at least one of them before he gets to us.

Just for people who don't know much about Grundy, I'll give a description.

Grundy is 202cm 100kg ruckman from SA who should be going around top 3 in this years draft. I actually have him at 2, and at various parts of the year, was at 1. What has really impressed me since I started watching him was how evident his hard-working was. He came from a basketball background which has actually been a huge advantage for him. He is the best tap-ruckman that I have seen coming through the ranks in years. He is a better 'tap' ruckman than Naitanui, Kruezer, Vickery etc and by quite a fair margin too. He is also really strong around the ground, and has an excellent pair of hands. He isn't a lanky ruckman, he is actually a really smooth mover who relishes the contest. What has also left a big impression is his ground-level work. It's just so clean for someone of his size. He can go forward and some may think I'm over-exaggerating here, but when he goes forward, he becomes a Cloke/Buddy combo. He clunks huge pack marks and also does incredible things at ground level too. Skill set is good, not incredible, but not every ruckman can be like Cox in that regard. He would be the best junior ruckman of the past 5 drafts and has the potential to be the best ruckman in the AFL due to his incredible work-rate. If we got him at 9, you'll know that lunatic who is running around naked on Punt Rd is me.

kinda reminds me a bit of vickery a few years back, Port were going to take him at 4 but it was a late call that they took Hamish Hartlett. would be great to see them pass on the ruckman again, dosnt help that grundy is from SA, hes a beast, and port havnt got the greatest rucks. cant really see it happening, but we can dream

Damnit, why do they have to do the top 10 in reverse order on draft day. So much suspense.... we'll be first up!
Second. Carlton will have pick 10. :p
Then Daniher
Then us.

If Melbourne loses their pick it puts Wines back in the pool as well as they were going to take him. And then Port has pick 6 so one more player for them to choose. Brissy definitely won't take Grundy. How many first round rucks can you have.

Not if they strip Melbourne of their picks as they should. Really, the AFL should reverse the Hogan trade and take pick 3 off GWS (let it and pick 14 disappear into the ether and put the kid in next year's draft. Bad luck GWS, but if you lie down with dogs...)

Grundy would be awesome. Grundy/Vickery, NicNat/Lycett, funny walks for everyone else.

I dout they'd go as far as reversing trades. But stripping them of #4, #27 (Viney) and their remaining picks as well as Hogan would be enough IMO.

Grundy? Surely not, never dared to dream.

Wonder what GWS are playing at? Maybe they are content to sit low and suck up more high draft picks.

Only down side to Grundy is we won't get that immediate kick of a shiny new midfielder ready to go.

there is still going to be good ones at 32 and 34 i would think.

No shiny midfielder in first round but potentially the best ruck in the league feeding Cotchin and Martin for the next decade. Drool. Our 3 x 2nd rounders can be all used on mids anyway :p
