I am worried though, there tends to be one good ruckman in every draft, then a distinct drop in quality towards the second one. Does Grundy have stiff enough competition? I'm wondering how his competition compares to the likes of Leuenberger and Naitanui.

Was the best ruckman last year so nothing to worry about. Longer was rated quite highly last year yet Grundy dominated him in the champs. So as far as I'm concerned theres nothing to worry about.

GWS and Port are the only clubs before us that will take Grundy. From what we are hearing.

Industry intelligence is saying O'Rourke is wanted by GWS. They have already committed to Whitfield and most believe Toumpas too. So if it is true and they take O'Rourke at 2 or 3, Grundy looks like he will only be taken by the Power.

In talking about the Power mixed messages about who they value the highest is still coming out, with Menzel, Mayes and Membrey all been rumoured. No mention at all of Grundy.

Let's clear it up, it's a long shot no doubt, but a possibility. Growing all the time. I will try and scoop over the next two weeks two things. Who has spoken lately to O'Rourke and try and see what the talk is about who the Power want. I personally think they want Menzel but that is my opinion only.

I was pretty sure I heard GWS actually didn't rate Toumpas at #2. Or even 3...

Needs first, and we needs midfielders.

I know we need ruck depth but an 18 year old is not going to be ready now anyway.

In saying that, I am against drafting ruckman with a first pick, always have been. Look how good Kruezer looked as a no 1 pick, and boom, Maric for pick 37? is currently a better player IMO.

Massive kids are too risky for mine.

It's all moot anyway - Reg will be long gone before our pick.:(

Andy D is embarrassed, made to look the fool with this tanking stuff. He won't be lenient.

Everything coming out of the AFL is this is big. Adelaide and Tippett on the backburner big. I expect Melbourne to be punished more than anyone else ever has. The league will be a laughing stock if not.

I have also heard gambling agents putting pressure on the AFL. The integrity of the game has been damaged. Melbourne (not the only ones who have done it, but got caught with evidence) will be punished to the full extent I imagine. AFL would look foolish if they don't. I know a club that is now factoring pick 4 removed from Melbourne.
Precisely. They'll smash the pathetic, shit-eating, smug grins right off their faces.

(Oh no wait, their continued failure has already done that.)

Kruzers problems are his to skinny and can't gain weight otherwise losses his speed and agility as well as doing his knee. If Kruzer could get his body right he would be up there with Maric who to be fair was a bit of a fluke.

Fair enough. What do people think about drafting Myles Bolger? Rated as one of the top 25 prospects in my old 2011 prospectus

That's entirely fair enough.
But we would hardly be reaching or burning a superhigh pick on someone out of need. I'd be more nervous if we were looking for a tall desperately and thinking about Jaksch at 9 etc.

At 9 I am expecting a very good player. Grundy fits.

Would shock me. He has every right to be considered the best player from this draft with Whitfield.

Grundy is just as capable up forward as he is in the ruck. The guy has that aggressive nature that makes the best ruckman elite. A combination of Maric, Grundy and Vickery rotating all around the ruck and forward line would make us the most potent attack in the game. You have just seen how important an aggressive ruckman is in Maric, compared to what we had, this selection would solve the issue for ten to twelve years. It would add years to Maric and less pressure on Tyrone. Also, Grundy can be a fulltime forward if need be. An aggressive Tippett. If Daniher is a steal at 10, Grundy will be just as big if we get him at 9. 202cm (still growing) and 100kg, ready to go now. Agility of a midfielder. You just cannot turn this kid down.

There is just as much risk that a midfielder doesn't come on and be elite that we need, as Grundy not being everything we see. Actually, Grundy is less risk. He will be a star, no doubt at all. Fingers crossed hey!

To be honest, Kreuzer is not exactly far behind Maric, apart from age and hence body maturity. Round one last year showed that. Another couple of years and he could be pretty much anything ruckwise. Personally, I just hope the Blooze try to make him in to a forward, cos he just isn't.

Secondly, Maric wasn't really a fluke. There are too many other prime examples of this kind of ruck recruiting for it to be a fluke. If a club does their homework right before committing, they're probably better than 50% chance of getting a decent ruck in this manner.

Hard to argue with that :thumbsu:

You know alot more that me about the kid, my opinion is purely positional, you seem to have first hand knowledge.

True but from a cost perspective they are worlds apart.

Is it us Bob :D

No, not us.

Grundy is better then what Nic nat was at under 18 level.

I agree with this. Doesn't have quite the athletic freak about him as Nic Nat, but not far behind. Would aggressively batter him though. I project he will get to 204cm or around that mark, will take some stopping, in the ruck or up forward.

Yeah but doesn't fully guarantee I am going to be right. Seen this kid on tape around twenty times, seen him live around 10. I think I would be 99% confident this kid will be a star in this league. Would be exciting to see the big fella pull on the yellow and black Round One. Looking into our forward line seeing Jack, Vickery and Grundy there, with Maric in the ruck. Shivers down my spine. Try and stop that Carlton.

Then again, I think Dea has All Australian ability which people disagree with so, as I said, could be wrong. ;)

Question
Given there is widely accepted to be hardly any decent rucks apart from Grundy in this draft, should we discount what he has shown because he hasn't been up against reasonable competition in U/18s?

How did he go for Sturt?
