To be honest, Kreuzer is not exactly far behind Maric, apart from age and hence body maturity. Round one last year showed that. Another couple of years and he could be pretty much anything ruckwise. Personally, I just hope the Blooze try to make him in to a forward, cos he just isn't.

Secondly, Maric wasn't really a fluke. There are too many other prime examples of this kind of ruck recruiting for it to be a fluke. If a club does their homework right before committing, they're probably better than 50% chance of getting a decent ruck in this manner.

Actually I take that back i forgot Adelaide and Sydney got both Jacobs and Mumford on the cheap.

If Grundy is on the board at 9 then WE MUST TAKE HIM! No club can ever underestimate the importance of a 200cm 100kg giant with the ability of this boy. Everyone must look 3 or 4 years forward. In an important final, you need someone to take a clutch grab in dying minutes, if you got a bloke like Grundy up forward then you have half a chance. For what its worth I never thought he would ever drop to 9. I see it as almost impossible and thats why I never discussed him in any of our discussions for our pick. Indeed I have to say, If I had the 1st pick in the national draft and could pick any player I would pick Grundy. The boy will be a star. Tough, Smart, Aggressive, 200cm with decent agility. With Maric, Vickery and Grundy we could make an almighty mess of opposition defences going forward.

You sure about that? Because you then say....

Which one is it, that we can predict that Grundy is no Naitanui, or that we don't know what he'll be?

The best ruckman in the league is Naitanui, who was drafted at pick two. If Sydney had the chance to draft Grundy, they would.

I think Grundy to Richmond would be the coup of the decade and would mean Richmond would probably only need 3, four maximum ruckmen on it's list.

lots of ifs ands or buts

Statistically speaking we are better off with a genuine midfielder

Considering Grundy would fill a partial need and Dericx's incapability to hold a chest mark, we would have to take him if he slid to #9. Never really taken it into account that he would slide as I thought it'd be a given that GWS pick him up.

Little bit off topic but not really. Geez i hate the stupid f*%king reverse top 10 countdown on draft day. Seriously what a stupid gimmick that should be scrapped immediately.

I'll put this into perspective for some tigers who don't know how huge it would be if Grundy slipped to 9.

It would be the same if Naitanui slipped to pick 8 in 2008 draft. EXACT same. The only difference is that this is a stronger pool, so naturally, Grundy is a better footballer. (Well at least at the same age.)

Grundy fixes three problems for me.

  • Vickery permanent CHF in 2013, no more pinch hitting. He can be a pure CHF and Grundy can develop slowly like Vickery did in the early part of his career.
  • Maric's replacement. To be honest, Vickery hasn't shown that he can take the mantle of number one ruck yet. The combo of Grundy/Vickery would rival that of Cox/Naitanui.
  • Elite ruckman. Good ruckman are important to a side. Elite ruckmen are the most important players on the field. Look at Sandilands and Cox in their prime. They were absolutely huge, and when they were on, the team usually was on. Grundy will be at minimum, a good ruckman. He has the potential to be better than Naitanui, it's scary how good he's become in only two years.

Good post M_R. I don't follow the draft as closely at a lot in here... I love the analysis and banter that goes on in this thread.
But must admit watched his footage and he just monstered guys. Has looked clean and moved well. Wow.

Don't agree with a lot of this but I would get Grundy on best available anyhow:D

If picks 3 and 4 go from Melbourne, mini draft re-opens for the bulldogs or whoever for Hogan or whoever, Viney back in anything is possible but it would be a lot fairer for all. Bulldogs would need a forward surely

Just out of curiousity, why would you want Grundy if not for those reasons?

Because at 9 he is best available probably, probably better than Vickery and after Maric the jury is still out for our Rucks etc.. and Maric won't be playing in 10 years time probably.

I see Vickery more as a value Ruck prospect than a permanent forward but I would still get Grundy at 9 and I wanted us to have a crack at him with a mini draft pick last year
