Would love Grundy...just can't see him still being available at 9

The talk of Grundy flies in the face of our whole recruitment strategy. If you go by Blair's philosophy which he is on record in saying 'drafting for talent & trading for need' then surely we take best player possible first. IMO we will look to plug the hole re our ruck stocks with a rookie selection...

Grundy will be the best talent at our pick ??? Dont really know what you mean

If picks 3 and 4 go from Melbourne, mini draft re-opens for the bulldogs or whoever for Hogan or whoever, Viney back in anything is possible but it would be a lot fairer for all. Bulldogs would need a forward surely
If any penalty is decided on for the Demons prior to this years draft, which i think is doubtful to begin with, i can't see how the AFL could possibly reverse a deal already ratified. They couldn't possibly re-open the mini draft.

Best we could hope for is the Dees lose pick 4 (plus second rounder etc), and Port take Viney... or leave him to fall to us, even? Effectively this would bump our first round pick up at least one position, two if Viney is taken in those first seven selections. Would possibly throw up a Mayes etc.

Plowman will go Dogs or Lions from what I've heard. Dogs have done all the tests on Menzel so they may snap him up.

Been thinking about it a bit and have decided that even if Grundy is available I think we need to choose the best available midfielder.
Point Number 1: We need to challenge for a flag within 3-5 years while our core group are in their prime and just before the GC and GWS tirade sweep the competition, will he have developed into a best 22 player by that stage?
Point Number 2: We need ruck depth, not starting rucks, a Maric and Vickery duo will be a very high level ruck combination as starting 22 players, you can say well Vickery won't make it as a ruck or we need a replacement for Maric, well if we select Grundy thatll probably mean Vickery or Maric is pushed out of the 22 as I cant see us lining up with 3 possibly 4 (Griffiths) 200+cm players in the one line up and as for the replacement for Maric, he is 25, by the time he is 30 and we are in need of replacing him our core group MAY be past its best shot at a premiership. We need someone who can step in RIGHT NOW for the next 3-5 years and compete if Maric is injured
Point Number 3: Very reluctant to use our first selection on a ruckman regardless of our lists position, Most of the games elite ruckman have come from the rookie list and I think ruckman are the hardest to gauge on whether they can translate their junior form into senior form, for this reason alone I think itd be a SOMEWHAT wasted selction to use our first pick on a ruckman (especially considering we have already done this once with Vickery in 08)

Now ive only seen highlights of this lad Grundy and while he looks a very good prospect at pick 9, id be quite reluctant to use it on him because of the reasons stated above. I feel that we need to address our outside class with pick 9 (leaning towards Macrae or Mayes if available) and then use our 3 second round selections on some inside grunt

Point 1: He'll be best 22 within 3-5 years.

Point 2: He'd start as ruck depth, but would develop into a number 1 ruck about the time Maric retires. Vickery could be a full time forward for awhile as Grundy plays no.2. Would only play Grundy for 1/3 of the season maximum anyway.
Maric isn't 25. He's just about 27 (January). We won't win a flag next year so he's 28 by time we start challenging at an absoulte minimum (more likely 29) By time Maric turns 30 we'd have Deledio at 29 as our oldest player. Cotchin would be 26, Martin 25. If they are past it by then I give up. IMO at best Maric will serve us for 1 maybe 2 cracks at the flag. Our midfield and KPP are set up at an age to be up there for 5-6 years. Grundy would see a smooth transition from 1 ruck to the next without having to go out and find one when our cap is bursting from being a contender.

As for needing someone to step in right now Grundy/Vickery could go 50/50 if need be. Vickery could probably do 65/35 split even. Derickx could do some games if need be. Even if we don't take Grundy we are still faced with the same problem. Grundy is a very good forward FWIW. Reads the ball well, uses his body and very dangerous at ground level.

Point 3: Depends on the ruckman you are talking about. Naitanui is worth every bit pick 2. Whilst Cotchin has turned out better than Kreuzer I'd still have been happy with Kreuzer at 2 if they'd taken Cotchin at 1. Very good player been held back by injuries. Ottens was also worth every bit of pick 2. Can't remember too many other rucks rated in the top 2 in a draft.

This draft is extremely strong for midfielders but not so much talls/rucks. Get the best one in and we are a step up on the rest of the competition. We have 3 second rounders where we can add to our outside class and grunt midfielders. FWIW from what I've seen there isn't much in the way of rucks next year.

I know it's all a bit moot considering how unlikely it is Grundy will be available but he would be able to step in and have an immediate impact. Many watchers, my self included believe he will be right up there to win the Rising star. There is no reason he couldn't play the 3rd tall role we have planned for Edwards in the absence of Miller.

He is already 100kg and has a strong defensive side to his game, he is coordinated and skillful and can hit the score board.

He would make us a better team and we could choose big bodied plug and play mids with our 3 2nd rounders and mature age mids in the rookie draft to make us more competitive for next season.

For reasons I can't explain (probably because I'm basing it on absolutely nothing) I still really hope we can get Macrae
Just had a look at the trailer for the HS pick me series. Wowee a bit of footage with Macrae in it. Def be happy if he was there at pick 9.

Haha i feel like im a hore. Reckon ive nominated about 7-8 kids as my selection in this thread alone

Respect the opinion tigs! Im not saying I wouldnt be excited by a Vickery and Grundy future ruck combination, I guess im just paranoid about getting a shot at this elusive flag before Demetriou's pride and joy (GC and GWS) get up and running. You obviously know more about him than me, what sets him apart from other ruckman? and who's a current AFL player who his style is similar to?

I think he could help us win one before then. I think they are a long way from winning one. Like 6-8 years long. They look promising and they have the big name kids but a lot of GC's are leaving who were highly regarded. (Caddy/Hickey/Toy/Jolly) From what I've heard GWS will be looking at something similar next year (Tyson/WHE/Adams) plus anyone they sign this year. Plus side for those two teams is it will balance out their list better age wise but it will make the process take longer.

The plus side to Grundy is he is already huge so you can already see what he can offer at AFL level. He's competed against men for 2 years. Longer was touted top 5 last year and went 8 and Grundy made him look ordinary by comparison a year ago as a 17yo. His athleticism and movement for a big guy is phenomenal. Skills already very good for a kid whose played for 3 years and is 202cm. Very co-ordinated for a young ruck as well. Generally the risk on ruckman at early stage is they need to fill out and there is a lot of guesswork done. With Grundy he is already well-developed physically.

Tough to compare him to anyone. Probably a Dean Cox. I think he'll be a better player than Naitanui. Not quite the same level highlight reel but he'll have a good one in his own right and be a more consistent player.
