For a midfielder to have the potential to be elite I would say they need the following - explosiveness, kicking skills, an ability to constantly rack up the possessions by reading the play, size. By explosiveness I would say can he run 20m faster than 3 seconds and does he have pretty good agility. Kicking both accuracy and penetration eg can he accurately kick over 50m. Size, not too skinny. Preferably has a bit of muscle or the potential to get bigger.
These guys tend to get picked up in the top 5 each year and include guys like Dusty, Cotch, Murphy, Scully, Deledio, Coniglio, Swallow etc. BTW it wouldn't surprise me if Hartlett from Port Adelaide and Morabito join this group also. Pick 9 is a midfielder just outside these capabilities. Would Garlett have all or most of these attributes? He is probably lacking a few. From the sounds of it Vlaustin lacks the explosiveness to be an elite talent also.
