People were saying the same thing about Kreuzer weren't they? I know he's had injuries, but he's hardly turned out to be the dominant ruckman/clear number one pick everyone expected him to be has he? I know you can use plenty of midfielders as the same example. I just think that ruckmen aren't really that clear cut. Having said that, a few posters on here are twisting my arm towards wanting Grundy. Maybe I'm just in denial.

Lonergan/Kennedy/Colquhoun/Hrovat. Fair chance one of them could be available at our first 2nd rounder otherwise we look like getting Wright and probably Atkins.

He was a real standout for me in the champs with his speed and line breaking ability.

The fact we have Wood and Stephenson training with us should sent alarm bells throughout our supporters.
I don't think we'd be so short sighted as to let Grundy slip past us. I think he'll go to Port regardless, in which case I'd be happy with Vlastuin, so it may be a non-issue.

I'm thinking that Wood and Stephenson are training with us because there's a second Delisted Free Agent Recruitment Period that opens the day after the National Draft (November 23rd). Maybe we're just covering all bases? If Grundy slips to us at 9, we take him and say "Thanks but no thanks" to Wood and Stephenson. If he doesn't slip to us and we take Vlastuin / Garner / Macrae / Mayes / whoever else, we MAY then take one of Wood and Stephenson in the Delisted Free Agent Recruitment Period.

I'd say that's great management. Imagine if we didn't bring these ruckmen in and Grundy went early. We would be then taking a punt on someone we haven't seen. I'd imagine it costs us bugger all for them to train with us for a few weeks. Also remember every year we have guys trying out for spots this time of year and rarely do 1 if any make it. Wood and Stephenson are far from guaranteed spots on any list at Tigerland.

Was probably the worst performed at Nationals of any player ever considered a round 1 pick .
He was only playing VFL to try and inflate his value after pretty much falling out of top 20 pick contention .
Read about why he struggled at nationals. They had backed off his training after he went too hard. He starred in the VFL and you make a negative out of it! He put together awesome numbers in the TAC Cup. All coming off an horrific injury. The kid has fierce determination, tough as old boots, great hands in tight and is great in the air. He does have a leap, he's much more than just a big body and is a natural footballer. The only question for me is the leg, and I'm sure the clubs have expert medical opinion on that.

You would assume if his leg gets the tick he'd be a no brainer at 9 with his talent?

Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

If Maric goes down, we are stuffed. We can't have Derickx or Wood be our number one, so we sacrifice our forward structure by taking Vickery out of there.

Maric with Grundy as back up.
Riewoldt, Vickery and Grundy as our three tall forwards.

Structure. It's a beautiful thing.

Maric gets injured, Grundy number one. Lot better.
Edwards comes in as third tall forward.

List Management is vital. Hope this hippy type process doesn't sacrifice list management. The fact we have Wood and Stephenson training with us should sent alarm bells throughout our supporters.

If others have an issue taking a ruck in the first round good luck. He is a definite top 5 player and the best ruckman to come out of the juniors since Natanui. It doesn't make sense to not pick him, despite Vlastuins leadership and good character.
I agree with the gist of this, but think I'd prefer Grundy to begin at the lower level (VFL). Use a genuine forward as the third tall initially, and have Grundy ready to go if we lose Maric or Vickery.

Definitely agree with others that we need the likes of Wood and/or Stephenson training with us for now. If Grundy is gone at 9, we need backup options. I know people complain at the idea of replacing Graham with someone of similar calibre, but they are totally forgetting that we did also upgrade our fourth pick by ten places. It's a win-win.

Apart from Grundy, I doubt we have any interest in taking a tall at nine. So it's in our interests that others before us take a Plowman, Jaksch, etc to give us access to the better credentialed mids. All those things aside, I see Vlastuin as our safety net.

I'd be rapt if we took Stringer. I'm very confident we wouldn't take him unless we are very confident about his leg, and that he is as good as was touted twelve months ago. That would be exciting. If he's available and we pass, I'm pretty sure it won't be a decision we make light-heartedly, but more of a well informed decision.

Nothing's a no-brainer. Jackson will have his list and will take the highest one available.
Spot on. FJ & co. spend the year analysing the draftees, have 2 full time recruiters and 6 part time all over the country. They know who they want early.. It's the 3 picks after this that they have to nail.

7 days to go. Thank heck I'm going away this weekend should speed up the week.

If we take Stringer at nine that will be very interesting and I hope like hell that leg has healed. Like the type of player he could become but that leg just scares the shit out of me.

From the Hun article on Stringer this morning:
Jake Stringer has tumbled down the draft order because of complications from breaking two bones in his leg 18 months ago.
Recruiters described the 191cm goalkicker's running gait as "atrocious" in the 3km time-trial at last month's AFL draft combine.
Another said it was like he was running on "one leg".
But the Herald Sun can reveal an AFL club official believes Stringer's issues could be resolved inside three months with the help of some modified boots and re-modelling his running style.

Sounds like a few issues still exist. Would depend on whether the club is prepared to write off 2013 to get him right for the long term.

I heard he only started kicking with his broken leg again at the combine also.

It's a tough one Tb, although he looks ready to go he's still under 20 yrs and has not stopped developing (physically). Against those at the next level or 2 down he'll go ok but against AFL senior battle hardened bodies it may be a different story. When was the last time an 18-19 year old ruckman came into AFL seniors and was able to hold his own, let alone replace someone like Maric in their 1st season ? I can't remember but an open to someone refreshing my memory.

Sorry, but that is ******* terrible and will see us missing the finals if injury to Maric occurs.

If the club wants to role the dice fine, I sure as hell won't be excited to see us rely on Derickx, Wood, Petterd.... Wow.

We have the chance to set the club up for years here. We have three other picks with chances to get mids, and next year another Vlastuin will be around, they come most years. Grundy types don't. Brisbane will be kicking themselves now.

I dare say we will miss finals If Maric goes down & your expecting an 18 yr old kid fill his shoes anyway...

I don't think it was just the issue around Maric/Grundy that TB had a problem with. i think that he also dislikes the prospect of relying on blokes like Petterd and Wood to see us through. ie his structural set up (with Grundy as an option) allows the forward line to remain strong, especially through the spine. i can't remember the rest of his initial response to your 1st post so i could be way off base here. am sure TB will happily correct me if so :)

i can really see this board going into melt down next week
so many people have done some research and have favourites for us to pick.
i would not be suprised to see fj do a conca at our pic's
good luck to the mods

All this Vlastuin love has me F***d !

If Grundy,Plowman,Wines,O'Rourke are there at pick #9 we take pure talent ahead of 'workmanlike' any day of the week.

You can Never have enough class & talent in your team-
Buy the cream at #9
Save buying the veg, potatos for #32,#34,#43

Well if that Conca like pick is Garner then I'll be a happy Chappy :)

It is harder now that we can all watch highlights and get our favourites. Here's hoping whoever we get has a good solid career for the Tigers

Spot on mate. We need a structure to win games.

Either way, Grundy is no ordinary kid. He is 100kg and played and dominated men already. Give me an 18 year old Grundy over both the rejects we have training with us.
