Fact is, the club has a number of full time recruiters, who watch these kids years out from being eligible for the draft. If we stop and think about this for a minute, I'm sure all of us (apart from Mr Magic) could admit that we couldn't possibly know the players better than the club.
So, when you strip it back, I think the issue is that we either don't understand, or don't agree with the recruiting strategy/criteria of the club. If Vlastuin is our man, while some may think there are more talented players on the board, we have to consider that the club knows, or takes into consideration factors we are not privvy to. Obviously our much talked about three pillars policy springs to mind, in particular character, which most of us would not be good judges of, no matter how many U18 highlights we've watched.
Just one final point on Vlas. Anyone stopped to consider the fact that he was very highly rated (top 3 by some, and certainly higher than mid teens by most AFAIK) a year ago. Then, after having an injury interrupted season, having to play out of his preferred position, and no doubt setting him back in some of the areas that are now considered areas of concern (speed, stamina), he's slid down the rankings somewhat? Anyone considered that if our recruiters watched more than just his 2012 games/highlights, they might realise he has the potential, with a full recovery from this year's injury issues, and a good preseason or two, that he might just get back to 2011 form, upon which he was so highly rated? Just throwing it out there!
yeah yeah but....
TV hasn't made it yet, nor has Conca, Ellis will be serviceable, don't mind Dea and we overlooked Grimes initially.
Fact is the jury is still out, I like Griffiths ( but that aws a risky pick
.I agree though there is an apparent issue regarding the strategy mix in terms of balance and for the middle size players not enough X factor. Don't mind the Ellis pick though because no real standouts around there, even Conca was kinda plausible because the Essendon guy is no world beater, but for me Vlas is a very good player however this draft has depth and there simply are better picks with more upside for me. Particularly when you can get a simllar Vlas type in future years. Makes no sense to me and sets us back and possible ruins our premiership chances regarding windows(you gotta give yourself every chance to touch the skyIMO)
The bottom line for me is this- If you cannot get a similar player like Vlas or better in the next 4 years via the draft/free agency or maybe trade get him. The thing is I cannot see how you couldn't get another Vlas in next few means so for me why is 2012 so special. Just don't like the strategy at all!!! It is not!!! the percentage play for me.
