I want Grundy coz of his potential long term value
I want Menzel if he can stay uninjured
I want Lonergan coz he looks like Mark Wahlberg, who's pretty bad-ass

Mostly I think I want Vlastuin because he is a level headed, hard, and skilled leader. I went off him for a while because I like to get excited about draft day, and the more certain I am of the pick, the less suspense there is when we read out the name. But objectively he will probably be the best pick for us - don't mind flare, don't mind this ridiculous x-factor, give us the best objective pick

THe genetics involved here have never been studied well enough to be able to categorically say if it is a risk factor one way or the other. One would be a brave man to say it has nothing to do with it. We know connective tissue alterations exist that are genetically linked for other disease processes (Marfan's syndrome etc). Not enough information exists here though. An intelligent guess in the Menzel case would be yes, there may be a genetic reason for these ACL tears, or at the very least contributing to them.
As for yourself, I would not like to give an opinion except to say, that unless you are a high performance sports person that must do this to return back rapidly to their professional sport, I would err on the side of caution and avoid LARS. That is definitely the current thinking.

ok mate no problem. on me, this was not to get me back playing moreso for living. i had an acl repair(mr r crowe) which went well, but 6 mths later tore 40% of the medial meniscus and had to have it removed. i played cricket for the next 12/13 year on it until the bone on bone started to get worrisome. i saw the surgeon again to discuss things and i could have had a tibial osteotomy and a lars to tighten up the acl while have a petrie dish cartilage infusion done but in the end i didnt go thru with it. my understanding the lars surgery for non sports people is fine to just be able to get around alot better.

How is taking the solid Hayes/Hodge type over the flashy Stevie J type (with reportedly dodgy knees) not a percentage play??

I can't understand why people are advocating picks like that as though we've been drafting solid citizens for years. 2 drafts! Conca, Ellis. Who was before that? Oh yeah Dusty!

Fact is, this draft will make or break us. We've got the cream, we need the crop. Vlas is a safe bet, but you want to risk pick 9 on a player with dodgy knees or a broken leg or attitude problems? How is that playing the percentages?
Spot on Stylo.. Well said mate.

As the day goes on I am getting angrier and angrier at the fact that we will be taking Vlastuin over (most likely) Grundy, Wines and Menzel.
Why?
Please don't go postal and spray an AK-47 down at Punt Road if they do.. I'm really liking the squad of players and coaches we are putting together.

definitely DO NOT like how we have seemingly got a case of tunnel vision and wont consider anyone but Vlastuin.. passing on either of Grundy or especially Menzel if they are in fact available as EQ's mock draft suggests is crazy. Will be thoroughly disappointed if that turned out to be the case. Don't mind picking up Garlett either if he does slide far, the amount of talent he has coming off a low base seems to suggest that in an AFL environment with proper guidance he could become the steal of the draft.

Agree, and our x-factor players don't go missing for weeks on end, which I've seen posted on here some are happy to take. A guy who shows up for 5 minutes 1 week and doesn't matter if he doesn't touch it for a month. bewildering.
Yep - spot on Tigs. Look where that gets Carlton - inconsistency with Garlett and Betts and Walker - plenty of X-Factor there, but they don't have the consistency of the Stevie J types people talk about. This leads me to think that there's a distinct difference between mere mortal x-factor types and genuine superstar players who also have x-factor (Stevie J, Goodes, I think even Cotchin fits into this). When you think about it there are very few players across the league who are consistent x-factor players who can lead their teams.

Fact is, if you don't win enough games throughout the year you're not going to make finals, and pure x-factor players who don't become elite players in their own right won't be consistent enough to win enough games throughout the season. Pick 9 should be for a player that not only pops up and wins finals (hell, Mitch Morton won the Swans a GF), but should be for the blokes who get you there.

IMO, my affection for the pick of Vlastuin at 9 will depend materially on who we secure with our next 3.

Happy to judge them as a package
totally agreed that's where fj picks in second and third rounds over the years r players that u think where the f @#k did he pull that from . players that r on nobody's radar or u can take in later rounds i talk off the eltons D, ash helbig DEA arnot etc... so for those hoping for atkins , graham , wright , broomhead , Boston , garlett , etc.. i think he will pluck players we could iv taken at 42 or 88 or even rookie.

i think if that talented #3 pick doesnt have the ability to make good life choices yet then maybe he might be the cancer.
Possibly, but I see him more as immature and impressionable. Bit of a potential bad boy who needs to be surrounded by quality, solid citizens. Plus, the other aspect specifically in relation to Garlett, is not only that he is bit of a party boy, but that the concern is he doesn't inherently have it in his nature to give up aspects of the current lifestyle in order to extract the best out of himeslf. Regardless of any other factors, I doubt even the most talented will make a fist of it it AFL level without this ingredient. IMO, "character" is not just being a good boy/leader, but incorporates the desire/committment to give 100% to get the most out of yourself. I singled out Tambling as a case in point earlier in this thread. Not a "bad boy" that I'm aware of, but a talented junior who just didn't seem to have the tenacity/mental toughness/committment to push himself to step it up to his expected output at AFL level.

P.S. my first line of thought for a response to your post was "I've always been completely faithful to my wife, but if the playboy bunnies moved in next door...". You've got to be careful of the situations you put yourself into... and don't tempt fate!

after listening to matt clarke for get about grundy folks he talks about taking a tall with last pick i think.

Elton was touted as a first rounder and imo he nailed Batchelor other than maybe missing out on Luke Parker...

Elton was a highly rated slider, if anything.

amcre beat me by a nose!

yeah yeah but....

TV hasn't made it yet, nor has Conca, Ellis will be serviceable, don't mind Dea and we overlooked Grimes initially.

Fact is the jury is still out, I like Griffiths ( but that aws a risky pick:thumbsu:) I think though the recruitment of our middle size players hasn't been crash hot. Surprised if Arnot makes it. It is not who you are but what you do and your track record. Your job profile means diddly, if you cannot hit the picks!!.

I agree though there is an apparent issue regarding the strategy mix in terms of balance and for the middle size players not enough X factor. Don't mind the Ellis pick though because no real standouts around there, even Conca was kinda plausible because the Essendon guy is no world beater, but for me Vlas is a very good player however this draft has depth and there simply are better picks with more upside for me. Particularly when you can get a simllar Vlas type in future years. Makes no sense to me and sets us back and possible ruins our premiership chances regarding windows(you gotta give yourself every chance to touch the skyIMO)

The bottom line for me is this- If you cannot get a similar player like Vlas or better in the next 4 years via the draft/free agency or maybe trade get him. The thing is I cannot see how you couldn't get another Vlas in next few means so for me why is 2012 so special. Just don't like the strategy at all!!! It is not!!! the percentage play for me.

the problem or flaw with this theory is you have to pay market rate for these players while you pay unders if you DRAFT them. in our situation this is a factor plus, just as wanting to trade for a player but NOT gaurenteed of getting him.

As I said will be happy with Vlastuin as long as he's not at Grundy's expense. Heck, I'd rather Grundy than Wines for that matter. Kind of hoping someone takes Reg before us so we never know.

Don't care if we overlook Menzel or Stringer. We seem to be getting enough injured players this year as it is.

Not keen on Jacksh, only want Lonergan no earlier than 32 & if we take Corr then mods might as well just hit me with a red in advance.

THANKYOU

Finally someone other than me posts about broomhead....KID IS A JET!

GET HIM IN THE SECOND ROUND #willbebestplayerfromthedraft

Plus he has the funniest name.:thumbsu: (Well after Dick - but that name's already appeared at AFL level.)
