Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Had a brief chat with Lachie Whitfield the other night and he said he's having a good pre season and is raring to get back into it!

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

So are Whitfield and O'Meara similar players?

Anyone got a good comparison on the two and how they have faced off in junior days etc or playing styles?

Whitfield is more an endurance specialist who will run and run and work and work. More polished player at this stage. (Stylistically something inbetween Ben Cousins with his running ability and an early career Pendlebury with his outside game).

O'Meara is a more of an explosive, flashy type (stylistically not unlike G.Ablett and hopefully he can develop into something similar) who while also dominant for his age is probably more of a work in progress.

O'meara is a lot more physical likes to tackle, has a bit of aggro about him.
He also has explosive pace, and is very good on the inside.

Lachie runs all day and the ben cousins comparsion is appt because he plays
a similar style, wouldn't be surprised if he modeled his game on cousins.

Lachie also has a lovely weighted kick he uses well and never seems to be tackled, has very good vision and doesn't panic under pressure.

Thoughts ??

Tom has a very good skill set for a tall, great athlete(believe he did a 15+ beep at TAC testing last year with very little preseason). Played mainly back last season, I would think he will get a chance up foward this year.
One of three Bushrangers in initial Vic Country squad.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

I just got my Prospectus earlier today coincidentally. Seems like they've got most of the 'bigger' names. As a comparison, last year...

- they correctly picked 13 of the top 25
- four more were selected in the national draft
- one was a rookie pick
- and seven missed altogether

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

HFF the old Mornington Peninsula connection with you and me strikes again.

Haha no need to tell me about his cricket skills, played school cricket with him and he's an absolute gun. Batted @ 8 somehow, we probably had the strongest school cricket team you'd ever see mind you. But yeah a great talent.

Off topic, who was in that side?

Back on topic, I'm doing my diploma of Sport and Rec with Rolfe this year, seams like a ripper kid and pretty clean when we had a kick of the footy the other day. Was the first I'd seen of him after hearing plenty.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Absolutely massive hype around Cameron up here. Really impressed me in a few NEAFL games I caught him at in 2011. He's got the skills to be one of the best KPP out of QLD in a long time. I'd be surprised if he went anywhere but to Suns as a QLD zone pick, though.

Yeah. This must be the kid my old man (Mounties life member) told me about. He said "Mt Gravatt have got this young kid who marks everything in sight...against men." Interesting article on Clay below. Only 190cm at the moment - do you think he could make it as a KPF at AFL level or would he be a third tall type?

It’s not the sort of thing that is meant to happen to a 16-year-old. Especially not one who was voted the No.2 player at the U15 Australian Schoolboys Championships in 2009, and has since then carried that ‘special’ tag.

And as a junior he was a hot prospect in track and field. In 2004 he was ranked No.1 in his age group in discus and No.8 in high jump. In 2005 he ranked No.2 in discus in the Pacific. And in 2007 he ranked No.7 in shot put in Australia and No.8 in discus.

Sounds like a power athlete. Would be great if we can get him as a Queensland zone selection, especially if Jordan Bourke is leaning towards Geelong as reported. Gold Coast lack the difficult to match up on third forward (e.g. Patty Karnezis, Stevie Johnson, Jack Darling types).

I'd be surprised if he hadn't grown a few extra cm since this article, but not sure if he's got the frame to ever be a KPF. He really does strike me as a Patty-K type character though - his ability to read the game and find space is second to none. He rarely outmuscles his opponents, but still quite often dominates them, because he just understands the game and is such a natural at it.

As I've said, I'd be really surprised to see him head anywhere but the Gold Coast - sadly, as I'd love to see him join the Lions - but I think he'll be an absolute gun and a 10 year+ player at the top level.

Put an extra 10kg on him and he's a very, very frightening prospect.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Keep an eye on a couple of GWS Academy players this year in Merson & Turner, these 2 are stepping up to the plate and look real good on the park. Both played great at the State Zone 18s trials in Coffs early this year and were included in the intraclub last week for GWS and did not look out of place.
2 to watch for sure in the NEAFL this year.

This guy has one of the more impressive highlights packages i've ever seen, he isnt kicking goals from tough angles or anything but his technique looks so sound, despite his size he seems to kick 50+ meters with ease, he has a great turn of pace and hits up his targets by foot. :thumbsu:

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Does anybody know the latest on Jack Viney? The last I heard He'd applied to play VFL this year for Casey but haven't heard of anything since.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Anyone know how the AIS kids went against Box Hill in the curtainraiser at Aurora yesterday?

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

I went to school with:

Taylor Hine (Gold Coast)
Thomas Sheridan (Fremantle)
and Jono O'Rourke (2012 Draft Prospect)

Jono was more athletic and silky skilled than both
of those other afl listed boys even when he was 1 & 2 years younger
than both of the other two. He is miles ahead of Tommy skills wise and is the greatest young footballer I have known. He is a seriously talented footballer and he will climb the pecking order as the year goes along (barring injury).

Mark my words... He will be in the Top 10.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

O'Rourke certainly has the tools to push into the top 10 if he has a good year. Last year he was matching a lot of the top-age boys who ended up getting drafted, before his injury troubles.

Re: 2012 Draft Prospects

Matthew Lloyd mentioned a player from the AIS Academeny that he thought would be a top 5 pick, anyone remember the name he said?
